CPHS Wrestling: Sandites place 5th at Regionals with six State Qualifiers

The Charles Page High School Wrestling team took fifth place at the Class 6A East Regional Championship in Broken Arrow Saturday. The Sandites went 22-27 in individual matches with two finalists, six State Qualifiers, and eight placers. 

Freshman Mitchell Smith placed second at 113 pounds. He pinned Bixby freshman Cody Kaiser in 1:32 and Deer Creek sophomore Michael Fredrickson in 4:55, then won a 5-0 decision against Stillwater sophomore Gabe Fontanez before falling to Broken Arrow sophomore Parker Witcraft in the finals. 

Josh Fincannon pinned Northwest Classen junior George Allen in 55 seconds and won a 14-3 major decision against Bixby junior Isaac Gibson in the 220 semis but lost 1-0 to Jenks junior Hayden Crawley in the title match. 

Seth Jones pinned Union freshman Andre Boyd in 38 seconds but lost 14-10 to Broken Arrow senior Jackson Cockrell at 126. In consolation he won 5-1 against Bixby Sophomore Garrett Washington. In the third place match he beat Owasso sophomore EJ Tecson 4-2, scoring the go-ahead takedown with six seconds left. 

Blake Jones placed fourth at 132. He won an 11-0 major decision against Enid sophomore Trinit Zweifel but fell 1-0 to top-seeded Broken Arrow junior Jared Hill in the semis. In consolation he pinned Chris Dugger in 3:14 but fell 4-1 to Jenks senior Branden Elrod. 

Chris Kirby placed fourth at 160. He pinned Northwest Classen senior Levi Wilson in 21 seconds and Deer Creek senior Tim Trigg in 53 seconds but lost 17-8 to top-seeded Enid sophomore Chance Davis in the semis. In consolation he won 7-3 against Tye Rozell but lost 11-9 to Owasso senior Nate Jacobson in sudden victory overtime. 

Sango Whitehorn was pinned by top-seeded Broken Arrow junior Emmanuel Skillings in the 195 quarterfinals. In consolation he pinned Enid junior Luis Vega in 5:07 before falling to Jenks senior Ethan Felts. In the fifth place match he beat Bixby sophomore Brad Neasby 11-5. 

Preston Medlin lost a 6-4 decision to Muskogee sophomore Bobby Felts but won 7-2 against Ponca City junior Shayden Trant and 7-3 against Sapulpa junior Luke Young before falling to Stillwater sophomore Dax Hughes in the consolation semis. He gave up a 6-3 decision to Enid sophomore Daigen Gibbens in the 145 fifth place match. 

Brooks Dudley pinned Muskogee’s Ty’Vonte Williams in 2:42 but was then pinned by Ponca City’s Landon Newlin in the 182 quarterfinals. He pinned Union junior Shane Fields in 1:34 and Stillwater senior Eli Wilson in 0:54 in consolation before falling to Jenks senior Garrett Weis. He lost a 3-2 decision to Enid freshman Carlos Alvarado in the fifth place match.

Shane Wolf went 0-2 at 106. He was pinned by Ponca City freshman Preston Lee and lost an 11-1 major decision to Owasso sophomore Zeke Wheeler in consolation. 

Harley Newberry went 1-2 at 120. He was pinned by top-seeded Broken Arrow senior Bryce Cockrell and by Jenks junior Garrett Rawlins, but pinned Enid freshman Donterriou Covington in 1:19. 

Carter Goodman lost a 5-2 decision to Ponca City freshman Gabriel Roland and a 10-3 decision to Owasso senior Killian McNichol at 132. 

Ethan White was pinned by Broken Arrow senior William Martin in the first round of 152 then fell 4-2 to Midwest City junior Jamie Watts in consolation. 

Codey Cramer went 0-2 in his varsity debut at 170 pounds with pin losses to top-seeded Broken Arrow senior Bryce Mattioda and Ponca City freshman Joe Leavitt. 

Santana Naugle went 1-2 at heavyweight. He won a 3-2 decision against Ponca City junior HB Bowers but was pinned by top-seeded Union senior Micah Walker in the quarterfinals and lost a 7-4 decision to Owasso freshman Tyler Rich in consolation. 

Former Sandites Christian Forbes (Broken Arrow) and Carter Young (Stillwater) both made it to the Championship finals. Forbes came in runner-up at 106 and Young won the 132 bracket.

Broken Arrow won the team title handily with 294.5 points and Jenks came in second with 188.5. Stillwater was third with 176 followed by Deer Creek with 133 and Sand Springs with 125. 

Smith, Fincannon, and Seth Jones will automatically advance to the double-elimination State Tournament bracket. Kirby and Blake Jones will have a single-elimination wrestle off against the fifth-place winners from the West bracket. Whitehorn will wrestle the fourth-place winner from the West. Dudley and Medlin will serve as alternates should a qualifier from the East drop out for eligibility or injury. State will be held at Jim Norrick arena next weekend at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City.

The Sandites are 20-21 in individual matches with two in the Championship finals, three in the Consolation finals, and three wrestling for fifth place.

All placement matches will be held Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Tiger Field House on the campus of Broken Arrow High School. 

The top five wrestlers in each bracket will advance to the State Tournament with the sixth-place medalist as an alternate. The top three will advance to the double-elimination bracket outright while the fourth and fifth placers will wrestle a single elimination round to start. State will be held at Jim Norrick arena next weekend at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City.

The Charles Page High School Wrestling team went 4-5 in the first round of the Class 6A East Regional Championship Friday morning in Broken Arrow, and advanced nine wrestlers to the quarterfinals. The team is tied for fourth place following the Round of 16. 

Mitchell Smith pinned Bixby’s Cody Kaiser in 1:32 at 113 pounds. He will face Michael Fredrickson of Deer Creek in the quarterfinals. 

Chris Kirby pinned Northwest Classen senior Levi Wilson in 21 seconds at 160 pounds. He will take on Deer Creek senior Tim Trigg in the quarterfinals. 

Brooks Dudley survived a nearfall situation against Muskogee’s Ty’Vonte Williams at 182 and pinned the Rougher at 2:42. He will wrestle Ponca City’s Landon Newlin in the quarterfinals.

OSSAA 6A Wrestling Week 11 Individual Rankings

The OSSAA Tournament Rankings from February 3rd are the final rankings of the season and Regional assignments have already been released.

Broken Arrow wrapped up the dual season with their ninth title, beating Mustang 30-26 to end the year 16-2 and undefeated in Oklahoma.
