CPHS Baseball: Sandites win 8-6 rematch with Edmond Memorial

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team picked up the first win of the Matt Brown era Tuesday night in Edmond, beating Memorial High School 8-6 to pay back Monday’s 6-3 loss. Both teams are now 1-1 overall and 1-1 in district action.

On Monday the Sandites took 3-0 lead against the Bulldogs before giving up six unanswered runs. They made up for it on the road, scoring five runs in the first inning. Memorial responded with four one-run innings, but the Sandites rallied and outscored the Bulldogs 3-2 in the sixth.

Sand Springs loaded the bases right out of the gate with an error and two walks, then Kiefer Massey tripled to bring in Brycen Peterman, Ty Pennington, and Kaden Young. Massey scored on a ground out from Jacob Shields, then Kaegan Murray hit a sacrifice fly to score Keaton Campbell, who was walked.

Hayden Blair also hit a triple in the first, but was stranded after Jake Coleman was relieved on the mound by Hunter Lenochan, who limited the Sandite offense and only gave up four hits, one run, and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings.

Northeastern State University-committed senior Tatum Watie (1-0) got the start and the win on the mound, throwing four hits, four walks, and five strikeouts in four innings. Two of those singles came in the first inning, and Noah Kang scored on a passed ball to get the Bulldogs on the board.

Aaron Weber hit a triple for Edmond in the second inning and scored on an error at third. Weston Hicks was hit by pitch in the fourth and courtesy runner Major Kerr took third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.

Pennington drew a walk in the fifth but was put out on a double play, then Massey and Campbell both hit singles, but Massey was caught advancing to home. A walk and an error set up Trace Evans for a sacrifice fly that scored Peyton Medeiros.

The Sandites got back to scoring in the sixth. Murray singled and Gabe Glenn walked, prompting Memorial to change pitchers once again. Evans took over on the mound and gave up a single to Peterman, but Murray was caught advancing to home. Pennington drew another walk, and Ethan Sartin came up with a clutch 3RBI double.

Memorial also rallied in the sixth with their most productive inning. Watie threw two strikeouts, but also hit two batters with the pitch and gave up a 2RBI single to Lenochan. Sebastian Cassidy (0-1, 4-4) took over and ended the inning with a strikeout. Cassidy threw one walk and three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to save the game.

Sandite baseball will return to action Friday at 6:00 p.m. with a non-district home game against Shawnee (2-0). Edmond Memorial will will host Westmoore Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the Jaguars’ season opener.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites drop season opener 6-3 to Edmond Memorial

The Charles Page High School baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings of their season opener against Edmond Memorial, but the Bulldogs tied it up in the third and scored three more runs in the top of the seventh for the 6-3 comeback district win.

The game was fairly evenly matched. Sand Springs had seven hits to Edmond’s six. The Sandites benefited from nine walks, but gave up eight. Both teams committed three errors.

Jaxon Skaggs (0-0, 3-2) got the start on the mound and tossed five hits, eight strikeouts, and five walks in six innings. He gave up two walks and a single in the first inning to load the bases, but Jacob Shields caught a line drive to right field to save the inning.

Brycen Peterman hit a leadoff single for the Sandites, and Keaton Campbell brought in Peterman and Gabe Glenn on a double. Shields hit a double in the second inning and scored the Sandites’ final run on an error.

Edmond scored three runs on three walks and three singles in the third. The Sandites had zero difficulty in getting on base, but couldn’t get anyone back home. They stranded two in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Skaggs was extremely productive on the mound, striking out the side in the fifth.

Sebastian Cassidy (0-1, 4-4) took over in the seventh inning and received the loss, throwing one hit, two strikeouts, and three walks. An error from Peterman and three straight walks gave the Bulldogs the lead, and Aaron Weber hit a 2RBI single for the final runs of the game.

Cassity finished strong with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning, but Noah Kang tossed three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning, stranding Kaegan Murray and Shields, who were walked.

The Sandites will travel to Edmond Memorial Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. for a rematch. The Bulldog baseball field is located at 1001 South Rankin Street in Edmond.

CPHS Football: 2020 Sandite schedule released

The Charles Page High School football team has released its 2020 schedule, and next year’s Sandites will see a couple of new faces and some changes to the district lineup.

8.28.2020 Sapulpa (A)

The Highway 97 Rivalry will be renewed for the 91st consecutive year, but this time it will be a non-district game. Sapulpa was bumped down to Class 5A for the next two seasons, and this will be their first non-district meeting since 2013. It will be their first season-opening meeting since 1953 and the second straight year that the game will be played on the road in Sapulpa.

Sapulpa leads the series 45-43-5 overall, and won the last meeting 31-19 to snap a five-year Sandite win streak. The Chieftains went 6-5 last year for their second-straight winning season and second-straight playoff appearance.

Sapulpa State Titles: 1921.

9.4.2020 Bishop Kelley (H)

The Sandites’ first home game will be against 5A Bishop Kelley, in their first meeting since 1979. The teams have a split 5-5 record, with the Sandites winning their last four meetings.

The Comets are coming off an 8-5 season and State semifinals appearance, and haven’t had a losing record since 2010.

9.18.2020 Shiloh Christian (H)

The Sandites will take a bye week following their game with Bishop Kelley, then will host a Springdale, Arkansas 4A private school powerhouse. The Saints went 14-1 last season and were State Runners-Up. They haven’t had a losing season since 2012. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Shiloh Christian State Titles: 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2001, 1999, 1998.

9.25.2020 Ponca City (A)

District action will begin with a trip to Ponca City, where the Wildcats will be out to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke. After thirteen years as the 6A punching bag, Ponca went 5-5 for their best mark since 2005.

Sand Springs holds a 25-20-1 record against the Wildcats and won seven straight meetings till Ponca snapped the streak with a 24-14 win last season at Memorial Stadium.

10.2.2020 Muskogee (Homecoming)

Sand Springs will have a tough task on Homecoming as they look to snap a three-year losing streak against Muskogee. The Roughers hold a 23-6 record against Sand Springs, including a 54-6 drubbing last season. Muskogee went 8-3 last year and hasn’t had a losing record since 2015.

Muskogee State Titles: 1986, 1950, 1948, 1941, 1940, 1935, 1925, 1923, 1910.

10.9.2020 Booker T. Washington (A)

Both Sand Springs and Booker T. Washington will have new head coaches this year. The Hornets hold a 16-7 record against the Sandites including five straight meetings. They ended the Sandites’ last season 34-7.

Washington went 7-5 last year and hasn’t had a losing season since 2011. They are the only team besides Bixby to win a 6A-II title.

Booker T. Washington State Titles: 2017, 2010, 2008, 1984, 1973, 1971, 1969, 1968, 1967.

10.15.2020 Bixby (H)

The Sandites will host the heir apparent, the reigning State Champions and most dominant team in the division on a Thursday. Bixby holds an 18-12 record against the Sandites, including six straight wins dating back to the 2015 title game. Last year they dealt the Sandites a 75-0 shutout, their worst loss in 95 years.

Bixby went 13-0 last season and has won 25 straight games. The Spartans have made the State Finals for six straight years and haven’t had a losing record since 2012.

Bixby State Titles: 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, 2014.

10.23.2020 Choctaw (A)

Choctaw is new to the district, but not new to the Sandites. They played a non-district home and home from 2016-2017 that the Yellowjackets swept, 21-20 in 2017 and 45-41 in 2016. They are 4-2 against the Sandites overall. Last year Choctaw went 8-4 with a State semifinal appearance

10.30.2020 Bartlesville (H)

The Sandites will play Bartlesville for the 21st straight year. The Bruins are 21-15 against the Sandites and have won back-to-back meetings, including a 54-35 shootout last year. Bartlesville went 3-7 last season and hasn’t had a winning record since 2015.

11.6.2020 Putnam City West (A)

The regular season finale will be a road game against district newcomer Putnam City West. The two teams had a non-district home and home from 2016-2017 and the Sandites won both meetings.

The Patriots went 0-10 last year and have lost 16 straight games. They haven’t had a winning record since 2016.

CPHS Baseball: Keaton Campbell hits grand slam in final pre-season game

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team went 4-4 in preseason scrimmages and is set to start the regular season with a district home game against Edmond Memorial Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sandite Sports Complex.

The Sandites won 6-2 against Bartlesville behind a solid hitting performance that included six doubles and a home run from Ethan Sartin. Brycen Peterman and Keaton Campell both hit two doubles apiece and Kiefer Massey and Ty Pennington also had one each. 

Campbell was a perfect three-for-three at the plate with one RBI. Pennington led the team in runs with two, and Sartin led the team in RBI with two. The team was .360 batting and .720 slugging. 

Brock Swanson got the start and the win on the mound with three hits, one run, one walk, and four strikeouts in five innings. Massey tossed two innings in relief and threw one hit, one run, three walks, and two strikeouts. 

They struggled early on in a 10-3 loss to Bixby and didn’t get on the board till the sixth inning. Sebastian Cassidy got the start and the loss on the mound with seven hits, four runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts in three innings. Jasper Adams gave up eleven hits, six runs, one walk, and three strikeouts in two innings. Pennington tossed one perfect inning with no hits or walks. 

The Sandites were .207 at the plate with six hits. Bixby took a 10-0 lead before Jacob Shields scored on a dropped third strike in the sixth. Peterman scored on an error and Shields brought in Jaxon Skaggs on a sacrifice in the seventh. 

Last Monday they fell 6-3 to Bishop Kelley after giving up a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Massey scored the first run of the game on a dropped third strike in the second, but Kelley scored in the third and the fourth to take the lead.

Massey batted in Pennington in the sixth to tie it up, then Kaden Young stole home. The Comets’ bats came alive in the bottom of the inning with two RBI doubles, and a trio of Sandite errors allowed the comeback.

Carson Seabolt got the loss, giving up three hits and four runs with three strikeouts in two innings. Skaggs tossed seven hits, two runs, four strikeouts, and three walks in four innings.

The Sandites cleaned up the errors the next day against Jenks, but gave up 8 hits in an 11-3 loss. Watie, Young, Peterman, and Hayden Blair combined for 10 walks and three strikeouts on the mound. Campbell and Pennington hit doubles, and Campbell’s brought in Pennington and Cody Pulscher. Pennington scored the first run of the game on a steal of home.

The Sandites got back in the win column Thursday with an 8-2 win over Glenpool that saw both teams commit three errors. Blair, Taegan Cook, and Carter Williams all hit doubles, and Peterman had a triple.

Swanson got the win on the mound with four hits, two runs, three strikeouts, and three walks in four innings. Cassidy tossed three strikeouts with no hits or walks in two innings, and Adams tossed one strikeout with no hits or walks in one inning.

The pre-season ended on a high-note with a 13-8 win over Jay, including a fourth inning grand slam from Campbell. Campbell was walked twice and scored on all three plate appearances, leading the team in runs and RBI.

Massey got the start and the win on the mound with one hit, three runs, five strikeouts, and four walks in three innings. Adams struck out the side in the fourth, Watie tossed one strikeout and three walks in the fifth, Pennington threw one hit, one strikeout, and two walks in the sixth, and Blair had three hits, five runs, one strikeout, and two walks in the seventh.
