CPHS Wrestling: Sandites 5th after day one at Regionals, Fincannon and Smith in finals

The Charles Page High School Wrestling team is sitting in fifth place after the first day of the Class 6A East Regional Championship in Broken Arrow. The Sandites went 14-16 in individual matches and advanced two to the Championship finals with another eight alive in consolation. 

Freshman standout Mitchell Smith pinned Bixby freshman Cody Kaiser in 1:32 and Deer Creek sophomore Michael Fredrickson in 4:55 then won a 5-0 decision against Stillwater sophomore Gabe Fontanez. He will wrestle top-seeded Broken Arrow sophomore Parker Witcraft in the 113 Championship finals. 

Josh Fincannon pinned Northwest Classen junior George Allen in 55 seconds and won a 14-3 major decision against Bixby junior Isaac Gibson in the 220 semis. He will wrestle Jenks junior Hayden Crawley for the title. 

Harley Newberry was pinned by top-seeded Broken Arrow senior Bryce Cockrell in the 120 quarterfinals but pinned Enid freshman Donterriou Covington in 1:19 in consolation. He will face Jenks junior Garrett Rawlins next. 

Seth Jones pinned Union freshman Andre Boyd in 38 seconds but lost 14-10 to Broken Arrow senior Jackson Cockrell at 126. He will wrestle the winner of Garrett Washington vs. Leslie Fortner in consolation. 

Blake Jones won an 11-0 major decision against Enid sophomore Trinit Zweifel but fell 1-0 to top-seeded Broken Arrow junior Jared Hill in the 138 semis. He will meet the winner of Bryson Perez vs. Chris Dugger in consolation. 

Preston Medlin lost a 6-4 decision to Muskogee’s Bobby Felts but won 7-2 against Ponca City junior Shayden Trant in the 145 consolation. Next up is a Highway 97 rivalry matchup against Sapulpa junior Luke Young. 

Chris Kirby pinned Northwest Classen senior Levi Wilson in 21 seconds and Deer Creek senior Tim Trigg in 53 seconds at 160 pounds but fell 17-8 to top-seeded Enid sophomore Chance Davis in the semis. He gave the Plainsman trouble, however, with two reversals and nearfall points. He will meet the winner of Aaron Crutison vs. Tye Rozell in consolation. 

Brooks Dudley pinned Muskogee’s Ty’Vonte Williams in 2:42 but was then pinned by Ponca City’s Landon Newlin in the 182 quarterfinals. He pinned Union junior Shane Fields in 1:34 in consolation. Next up he will meet Stillwater senior Eli Wilson. 

Sango Whitehorn was pinned by top-seeded Broken Arrow junior Emmanuel Skillings in the 195 quarterfinals. He will wrestle Enid junior Luis Vega in consolation. 

Santana Naugle won a 3-2 decision against Ponca City junior HB Bowers at heavyweight but was pinned by top-seeded Union senior Micah Walker in the quarterfinals. He will take on Owasso freshman Tyler Rich in consolation. 

Shane Wolf went 0-2 at 106. He was pinned by Ponca City freshman Preston Lee and lost an 11-1 major decision to Owasso sophomore Zeke Wheeler in consolation. 

Carter Goodman lost a 5-2 decision to Ponca City freshman Gabriel Roland and a 10-3 decision to Owasso senior Killian McNichol at 132. 

Ethan White was pinned by Broken Arrow senior William Martin in the first round of 152 then fell 4-2 to Midwest City junior Jamie Watts in consolation. 

Codey Cramer went 0-2 in his varsity debut at 170 pounds with pin losses to top-seeded Broken Arrow senior Bryce Mattioda and Ponca City freshman Joe Leavitt. 

Former Sandites Christian Forbes (Broken Arrow) and Carter Young (Stillwater) both advanced to the Championship finals. 

Broken Arrow has the team title all locked down with 250 points, and Stillwater is a distant second with 124. Jenks is third with 116.5 followed by Union at 88.5 and Sand Springs at 87.

Saturday’s wrestling will begin at 11:00 a.m. with consolation quarterfinals and semifinals. All placement matches will be held in the afternoon session at 4:00 p.m. All matches are in Tiger Field House on the campus of Broken Arrow High School. 

The top five wrestlers in each bracket will advance to the State Tournament with the sixth-place medalist as an alternate. The top three will advance to the double-elimination bracket outright while the fourth and fifth placers will wrestle a single elimination round to start. State will be held at Jim Norrick arena next weekend at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. 

Josh Fincannon beat Hayden Crawley 9-7 in a dual this season. The two will get a rematch for the 220 Regional title Saturday.

CPHS Basketball: Broken Arrow spoils Sandite Senior Night 55-54, Richardson scores 16

For the second time this season, the Class 6A No. 11 ranked Broken Arrow High School boys’ basketball team (17-6, 9-5) pulled off the upset against No. 9 Sand Springs (16-6, 8-6), and this time they did it on the Sandites’ Senior Night in come-from-behind fashion.

Sand Springs won the first three quarters and held a 54-44 lead midway through the fourth before giving up eleven unanswered points to lose the game 55-54.

The first quarter saw eleven lead changes but Sand Springs had the first and final say. Marlo Fox scored the opening three and the closing two to take an 18-17 lead into the second quarter. The lead changed four more times in the second quarter but a three pointer from Cason Savage gave the home team the advantage till the final bucket of the game.

By halftime the Sandites were up 33-28, but Broken Arrow cut it to 38-36 midway through the third. Davon Richardson scored four in a row and Fox added another bucket to pad the lead and they entered the home stretch 46-40. 

Savage gave the Sandites their first double digit lead at 52-42 to cap a six-point run. Then the Tigers came roaring back with an eleven point run for the 55-54 lead at 2:02. The Tigers held that score till 11.1 remained and Richardson sent George McCurdy to the line for a 1-and-1. McCurdy missed the shot and Fox rebounded, but Anthony Allen came away with the steal. Josh Minney rebounded another missed Tiger free throw, but his last second half-court three failed to find its target.

Sand Springs was led by Richardson with 16 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Fox with 14 points and Minney with 10. The Tigers also had three players in double digits. Jaiell Talley led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Tyler Pinder and Allen with 10 apiece.

The two teams will return to action next Friday at the Ed Dubie Field House when the Sandites host the Tigers for the Regional Tournament. Broken Arrow will play Bixby (6-15) at 6:30 p.m. and Sand Springs will play Enid (8-15) at 8:00 p.m. The winners of those two games will play Saturday at 7:00 p.m., and both will advance to the Area playoff.

CPHS Basketball: Girls beat Broken Arrow 69-67 on Senior Night, Madison Burris scores 15

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (15-7, 8-6) made its third double-digit comeback win of the season Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, 69-67 against Broken Arrow (9-13, 5-7) in a Senior Night preview of their upcoming Thursday playoff game. 

McKenzie Harris got her first start of the season and scored the opening three-pointer. Raegan Padilla added a two and Hailey Jackson hit a pair of free throws but the Tigers took a 9-7 lead to end the quarter. Twelve Sandites saw action in the first quarter and the starters had limited minutes. 

The Sandites snagged 13 offensive rebounds in the first half but struggled with accuracy, going 8-of-38 on field goals. Broken Arrow was an even 11-of-22 and rode that to a 34-25 halftime lead. Sand Springs was up 21-19 till Taleyah Jones hit three-straight threes to pace an eleven-point run. 

The home team came storming back early in the second half and cut it to 39-38 with threes from Madison Burris and Jade Shrum, but Broken Arrow answered with an 11-2 run for the double-digit lead at 50-40. Darrian Jordan scored on a steal and assist from Burris to end the quarter 55-49.

Sand Springs won the fourth quarter 20-12 and scored seven in a row to cut their deficit to 57-56. A five point run from Journey Armstead gave them their first lead since the second quarter with 2:18 to play. The lead changed four more times from there and Jackson scored the final go-ahead putback at 66-65. Jackson and Padilla combined for three free throws and a last second shot from Jones wasn’t enough to even the score. 

Jones led all scorers with 25 points, but Makayla Adams was the only other Tiger in double digits, putting up 13. The Sandites were led by Burris with 15, Armstead with 14, Padilla with 13, and Jackson with 10. Jackson added 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. 

The game was the regular season finale for both teams, but they will get a rematch Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the Regional Championship at Union High School.

The Charles Page High School Wrestling team went 4-5 in the first round of the Class 6A East Regional Championship Friday morning in Broken Arrow, and advanced nine wrestlers to the quarterfinals. The team is tied for fourth place following the Round of 16. 

Mitchell Smith pinned Bixby’s Cody Kaiser in 1:32 at 113 pounds. He will face Michael Fredrickson of Deer Creek in the quarterfinals.

CPHS Baseball: Tatum Watie throws 9 strikeouts in 9-3 scrimmage win against Booker T. Washington

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team split its first two scrimmages of the season, falling 10-0 to perennial powerhouse Owasso on Monday, but made up for it with a 9-3 win against Booker T. Washington Tuesday.

Jaxon Skaggs got the start and the loss for Sand Springs against Owasso, giving up three hits and one run with no walks and one strikeout in four innings. Keaton Campbell threw three hits, four runs, and a walk in the fifth. Sebastian Cassidy tossed three hits, five runs, and four walks in the sixth. Jasper Adams pitched two hits, no runs, and a strikeout in the seventh.

The returning State Qualifiers from Owasso tossed 14 strikeouts and only one walk, and the Sandites came away with a .077 batting average. Ty Pennington and Gabe Glenn posted their only hits, both singles.

Tuesday saw a much stronger effort as the Sandites out-hit the Hornets 14 to 3. They also tossed 15 strikeouts, but gave up ten walks and committed four errors.

Northeastern State University-signee Tatum Watie got the start and the win, throwing a no-hitter with one run, nine strikeouts, and four walks in four innings. Brycen Peterman tossed three hits, two runs, five strikeouts, and three walks in three innings. Pennington threw one strikeout and three walks in the eighth inning.

Campbell went three-for-three at the plate with two doubles and one run. Pennington and Ethan Sartin led the team in runs with two apiece. Jacob Shields and Kaegan Murray had two RBI apiece. Sartin hit the first home run of the season, and Pennington and Hayden Blair both had doubles.

Sand Springs is entering its first season under interim Head Coach Matt Brown, who took over the program in September following the resignation of two-year coach James Garrison. Brown came to Sand Springs as an assistant in 2017. The Sandites went 22-11 overall last year and were 8-4 in district action.

Sandite baseball has seven more scrimmages before the season officially starts on March 2nd with a home game against Edmond Memorial. They will play in District 4 this year with Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Edmond Memorial, Enid, Putnam City, Putnam City West, and Stillwater. They will host a scrimmage against Bartlesville Friday at 5:00 p.m.
