CPHS Softball: Sabrina Usher and coaching staff honored by Board of Education

Senior catcher Sabrina Usher and her Sandite Softball coaching staff were recognized at the Sand Springs Board of Education December meeting Monday evening. Usher was presented with a Sandite Spirit Award, Head Coach Shelli Brown received a commemorative pin, and assistant coaches Brooke Smart, Jennifer Owen, Patty Keho, and Brad Ehmke received Pacesetter Awards.

The Sandite Fast Pitch Softball Team went 23-13 this fall for their fifth-straight Regional Championship, a runner-up performance in District play, and a State Tournament appearance. They also won the Choctaw/Carl Albert Tournament.

“They put in so much time,” Coach Brown said of her staff. “They connect with the kids. I’ve been fortunate enough to have this staff in place for a while, and that doesn’t happen very often…I wouldn’t be able to do my job if it wasn’t for them.”

Usher was named to the Oklahoma Fast Pitch Coaches’ Association All-State team and is signed to play NCAA Division 2 softball at Rogers State University. In her senior season she was .490 at the plate with a 1.07 slugging average and .586 on-base percentage. She scored 125 career runs and 144 RBI, with 173 hits, 25 home runs and a grand slam.

CPHS Football: Dustin Kinard fired from Sand Springs after 13 seasons

Dustin Kinard speaks to a ref during the 2018 football season.

Charles Page High School Head Football Coach Dustin Kinard was fired Tuesday afternoon. Before being dismissed he was the second-longest tenured coach in town history, and the second-longest tenured coach in Class 6A.

Kinard is also the assistant principal at Northwoods Fine Arts Academy, and an assistant coach on the Sandite Wrestling team. His wife also works for the Sand Springs school district. He recently beat pancreatic cancer, beginning treatment prior to the 2018 seasons, and announcing he was cancer-free shortly before the 2019 school year.

The Sandite football team went 2-8 this past season, following a 3-7 campaign in 2018, and a 5-6 year in 2017. In thirteen years he took the Sandites to six winning seasons and seven playoff berths, and finished with a 65-75 record. Three of those losses were won on the field and forfeited due to ineligible players. He was 4-7 in the playoffs, 41-48 in district play, and 34-30 on the home field.

Kinard inherited a program that went 4-6 for three straight years, and he repeated that mark in his debut season. In 2008 he took the team to a 7-4 record, their best season and first playoff appearance since 1997. The next year it was back to 4-6. During those seasons he had future Oklahoma State quarterback Johnny Deaton and eventual Superbowl Champion Michael Bowie on the o-line.

2009-2011 saw three more losing seasons, including a 1-9 mark in 2010, their worst since 2003. In 2012 they once again broke into the postseason, going 8-3, and repeated in 2013 with a 6-5 record. The 2012 unit only lost to “Big Four” teams Owasso, Union, and Broken Arrow.

2014 was a pivotal year not just for Sand Springs, but for many of the state’s biggest schools. Class 6A-II was split, meaning Sand Springs no longer had to play the Big Four. This change helped Bixby to become the powerhouse they are now, and for a few years it looked like Sand Springs might also be experiencing a culture change.

The Sandites went 8-4 in 2014, winning their first playoff game since 1997.

In 2015 they went 7-5, but two of those losses were forfeits. They beat Nathan Hale 61-8 and Enid 33-7, but were forced to vacate the wins due to playing an ineligible transfer student. Their third non-district game was canceled due to excessive lightning delays after the Sandites had already worked up an 18-7 lead against Guthrie midway through the second quarter. The team could easily have been 10-3, which would have been their best mark since 1997. The storied team shutout Bixby 20-0 on senior night and made their first State Championship appearance since 1966, where Bixby got payback 38-28 at Union Tuttle Stadium.

In 2016 they went 7-5 once again, won another playoff game, and fell to Bixby in the semifinals. 2017 saw another playoff appearance, but this time they were eviscerated in the first round for their first losing record since 2011, at 5-6. In 2018 the school-best six-year playoff streak came to an end with a 3-7 record.

Wins in past 20 games since 2007. The Sandites are currently 5-15 for the first time since 2012.

This year the team went 2-8, winning only one district game. The two teams they beat were a combined 3-17. The low-point of the year was a 75-0 loss to Bixby, the worst loss Sand Springs has endured since 1924. The top-ranked Spartans took a 45-0 halftime lead, and even their third string shut out the Sandite starters 14-0 in the fourth quarter.

6A schools have seen a lot of turnover in recent years. Out of 32 schools, only nine coaches entered the season with five or more years at their current programs. Kinard, Kirk Fridrich (Union) and Billy Brown (Shawnee) were the only coaches with ten years or more at their current school. Bixby’s Loren Montgomery just joined that club with his tenth year at the helm. Kinard had the second-worst record of any 6A coach with five or more seasons. The only coach with a lower mark was Southmoore’s Jeremy Stark (23-40), who resigned as soon as the season concluded.

A Change.org petition is currently circulating among Kinard’s many fans, who hope to see him reinstated. At press time it has 280 signatures, with proponents citing his recent playoff success as well as his personal impact on the students he coached.

CPHS Basketball: Marlo Fox scores career-high 23 in 75-64 win over Ponca City

The Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team won its third-straight season-opener Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, beating Ponca City 75-64, but it was far more lopsided than the final score indicated. The home team led by as much as 70-44 before running the bench for the final six minutes.

Junior standout Marlo Fox led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist, and Anthony Gazaway kept the Wildcats afloat with 20 points. Davon Richardson added 16 points and Daren Hawkins had 11 to put three Sandites in double-digits. Justin Thompson had 10 for the Wildcats.

Hawkins was first on the board with a free throw, then Gazaway gave his team the lead with a three. It was short-lived, however, and would be their only lead of the game. Richardson pulled up for a deep three on the corresponding drive, then he and Fox hit layups for the 9-3 advantage. Sandite mistakes allowed the Wildcats to storm back and tie it, twice, but by the end of the period the home team was back to a comfortable score of 20-13 after Jaeden Hurd put up four and Fox added five.

The second quarter saw the same score as the first, and the home team took a 40-26 advantage into the locker room. Fox was the star of the stanza with two threes and a three-point play to lead all scorers.

Minney hooked a steal to Fox to start the second half, then Hawkins scored on his own takeaway. Costen Brockman hung three on his first varsity field goal attempt, but Porter responded with a three of his own, and Collin Crandall cut it to 47-31. Minney posted five points in the quarter, and they took a 58-37 lead into the final stretch.

The home team took its biggest lead at 70-44 before sending in the second string. The visitors kept their starters in and went on a 20-5 run to close out the night. Eleven Sandites saw action.

Sand Springs will return to action in two weeks with a conference home game against Union (1-0) Tuesday, December 10th at 8:00 p.m. Ponca will host Lawton on Friday, December 13th at 7:30 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Armstead scores 23 in 62-47 win over Ponca City

The Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team hosted Ponca City Tuesday evening in their season debut. The Sandites paid back last year’s season-opening loss with a mostly-dominant 62-47 victory in a crowded Ed Dubie Field House. Sophomore East-Central move-in Journey Armstead paved the way with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists, and a block, and Joshua Berry picked up his first win as Head Coach.

The Sandites came out aggressive on defense, with Jade Shrum snagging a pair of steals before either team made it on the board. They struggled with accuracy, however, missing their first four field goal attempts, all from three-point range. Karis Branstetter was first in the net with a long three, followed by a layup from Carlie Badley.

Reagan Padilla was fouled on a three and made two free throws to get the home team on the board. Padilla hit a three soon after, and Darrian Jordan laid up to make it 11-7. Branstetter and Ryley Beard both sank threes and Badley had another layup, but they never pushed their lead past six points. The Sandites ended the quarter on a five-point run to make it 13-12, with baskets from Hailey Jackson and Madison Burris.

Armstead kicked off the second period with a three-pointer for the first Sandite lead, and the team traded punches from there till it was 19-19. Armstead added two more for the ultimate lead, and Jackson stole on back-to-back possessions, taking one coast to coast for the 23-19 locker room advantage.

The home team kicked off the second half with three layups on two steals. Armstead was first in the book, then Padilla and Jordan both took turnovers to the house. Jordan’s points gave the Sandites their first double-digit advantage. Baylee Fincher and Branstetter tried to whittle away the deficit, but Jordan and Armstead stayed hot, pushing the lead back to 34-23. They held that spread through the quarter and entered the fourth 40-29.

The Sandites got into foul trouble early in the fourth, drawing their tenth of the half with six minutes left to play. Ponca scored six on free throws and Baylee Fincher laid up on a steal to cut it to 45-37. Armstead launched a pair of long passes to Jackson for two easy layups, then hit four free throws to make it 54-40. She continued to draw fouls throughout the game and put up five more points. The girls had their biggest lead at 62-45 before Branstetter hit two freebies to end the night.

Armstead led all scorers with 23, but had help from five of her teammates. Jackson finished with 12 points and Padilla had 11, and thirteen players saw action. Branstetter led the visitors with 12 points, followed by Badley and Beard with 10 apiece.

Sand Springs will take two weeks off before hosting Union (1-0, 1-0) Tuesday, December 10th at 6:30 p.m. in a start to conference action. Ponca will compete at the Bixby Tournament, beginning December 5th.
