CPHS Volleyball: To the Ship! Sandites upset No. 6 Carl Albert 2-0 in tournament semifinals

Mustang, OK - In ancient Greek mythology the Titans were the supreme race. That is, until they were overthrown by a supposedly lesser set of deities. It’s fitting then that the lesser ranked Sandites pulled off a 2-0 upset against a team of Titans at the Mustang Volleyball Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (16-9) defeated 5A No. 6 Carl Albert (19-6) 25-15 and 25-19 in the Gold Bracket semifinals to advance to their second Tournament Championship this year. The Sandites will play the winner of 6A No. 6 Mustang (19-4) vs. 4A No. 2 Oklahoma Christian (17-2) in the championship round as they look for their second tournament title of the season.

The Carl Albert Titans won their pool earlier that day and were riding a four-match win streak before falling to the Sandites. Senior Cloe Campfield scored 8 kills in the win and sophomore standout Jacelyn Smith had a team-high 4 blocks. Madison Burris led in assists with 10 and Devree Youngblood had a team-high 7 digs.

Sand Springs only trailed once in either set, both times after the opening point. Izzy Brown struck first for the Titans, Sand Springs took the lead, then Abby Boyer tied it at 2-2. That was the closest they would come. McKenzie Harris kicked off a seven-point run for the Sandites and Carl Albert never recovered. The Titans rattled off four straight wins to cut their deficit to 17-12, but Sand Springs won eight of the final eleven rallies to secure the win, capped by an ace from Youngblood.

Boyer scored the first point of set two for the Titans, but Youngblood scored a kill and an ace in a five-point run for the lead. Kaylee Goggans tied it at 6-6 but Sand Springs won four more and led for the remainder of the match. Carl Albert committed only one more error than the Sandites, but trailed in kills, blocks, and aces.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites beat Choctaw and Enid, headed to Gold Bracket at Mustang Tourney

Mustang, OK - The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (15-9) went 2-1 in Mustang Tournament pool play to earn their way into the Gold Bracket Saturday afternoon at the Mustang Event Center. The Sandites fell 2-1 to the host team, but beat Choctaw 2-1 and Enid 2-0 to place second in their pool.

No. 16 Choctaw (8-7) stole the second set 25-22 from Sand Springs, but fell 25-18 in game one and 15-12 in the tie-breaker. The vertically gifted Yellowjackets were tough at the net with 8 blocks to the Sandites’ 3, but the Sand Springs serving game was remarkable with 12 aces that proved to be the deciding factor in an otherwise well-balanced match.

Choctaw only led for the first two rallies of the first set. Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood put the Sandites out front with a kill and three aces for a single-handed four-point run, and her team never trailed again. The Yellowjackets only tied it twice, at 4-4 and 6-6, and the Sandites handily coasted ahead to the win.

In game two the Sandites took a 7-4 lead thanks to a six-point run with two kills each from McKenzie Harris and Cloe Campfield, and two more aces from Youngblood. They held their lead till a five-point Choctaw streak at 17-17, and soon fell behind. They trailed 23-20 till Madison Blaylock and Youngblood knocked down kills to make it a one-point match, but Kenzie Stover notched a kill for the Yellowjackets and Youngblood’s next attack traveled OB to end the set.

Game three was closely fought, but the Sandites never once trailed, and the only tie was 0-0. Youngblood ended the match with her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 12 kills with 10 digs and 6 aces. Madison Burris had a team-high 9 assists, and Blaylock had a team-high 14 digs. Tana Bateson and Eliya Jennings led the Yellowjackets with 7 kills apiece.

No. 20 Enid (8-11) caught the Sandites off guard in the next match. After beating the Pacers 25-12, 25-6, and 25-13 just two weeks ago, Sand Springs wasn’t expecting to have such difficulty this time around. They still got the 2-0 sweep, but by much closer scores of 26-24 and 25-19.

Enid led for much of the first set after a five-point run and Gabi Cotarelo ace gave them a 7-4 advantage. The Sandites couldn’t get out of their own way with errors, and didn’t reclaim the lead till the second-to-last rally of the game. Campfield tied it at 21-21 with an ace, but followed it with a service error, then D’Sani Levy aced for the Pacers. A kill from Hanna Brinley left the Pacers needing only one more point for the win, but Youngblood and Payton Robbins scored kills to tie it and a couple of Enid errors secured the Sandite victory.

The Pacers took an early lead in set two as well, but this time the Sandites tied it much earlier after a three-score run from Youngblood at 11-11. Cotarelo hit back-to-back kills for Enid, but Harris and Youngblood scored for the 15-13 lead. The set tied at 15-15 and 16-16 before Sand Springs won eight of the final eleven rallies.

Youngblood had yet another double-double, once again with 12 kills and 10 digs. Raylynn Mong had a team-high 13 assists. Levy and Cotarelo led the Pacers with 3 kills apiece.

Sand Springs will play Class 5A No. 6 Carl Albert (19-5) in the first round of the Gold Bracket while No. 6 Mustang (19-4) will take on 4A No. 2 Oklahoma Christian (17-2).

CPHS Volleyball: Running with the best, Sandites fall 2-1 in thriller with No. 6 Mustang

Mustang, OK - The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team went 0-5 at their first tournament this season, but since then they have gone 12-3 to prove they are capable on running with the best teams the state has to offer. Although they have yet to secure an upset this season, they’re keeping the top dogs on their toes and making their foes fight hard for every win.

On Saturday the Class 6A No. 12 ranked Sandites (13-9) stole a set from No. 6 Mustang (17-4) on the Broncos’ home court in the first round of the Broncos’ home tournament, falling 2-1 in a down to the wire thriller. It was their first set won against a 6A top-ten opponent this season, though they do have wins over a few top-five teams in smaller classifications.

The home team won the first set 25-15, but let their guard down from there and dropped game two 25-23 before securing the match 15-11 in the best-of-three tie-breaker.

The Broncos jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in game two and led till the Sandites went on a six-point run with kills from Devree Youngblood and Raylynn Mong. An ace from Madison Burris made it 15-13. Sage McCaskill notched a pair of kills to tie it, but Sand Springs quickly reclaimed the lead and never gave it up. The Sandites led by as much as 24-17 before Madelyn Booth scored two kills and Annabeth Fehrle served two aces in a six-point run. The Broncos surrendered the set on a consecutive contact call to force game three.

Kills from Burris and Madison Blaylock gave the Sandites their last lead at 4-2 in set three before a pair of Fehrle kills and a series of errors gave the Broncos an insurmountable 8-4 advantage. Payton Robbins, Mong, Jacelyn Smith, and Burris combined for blocks and Burris notched the final Sandite kill before Ruby Kelley pounded in the game-winner.

Sand Springs will get a two-round bye before playing No. 16 Choctaw (8-6) and No. 20 Enid (8-9) to finish Pool Play. The Sandites previously swept Enid 3-0 earlier this month, but they have yet to meet the Yellowjackets this season. The top two teams in each four-team pool will advance to the Gold Bracket, and the entire tournament will be played Saturday.

CPHS Football: Sandites fall 50-20 to Arkansas State Champs, celebrate 100 years of football

Past Sandite football players, managers, cheerleaders, dancers, band members, and color guard members are recognized at halftime.

Sand Springs - The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (1-2) hasn’t shied away from tough competitors this season, taking up two out-of-state powerhouses during their non-district schedule. Just a week after shutting out Putnam City 35-0, the Sandites were on the receiving end of a beat down, falling 50-20 to the back-to-back defending Arkansas 6A State Champions from No. 1 Greenwood (3-0).

The Bulldogs won their 15th consecutive game and second-straight 30-point victory, taking a 50-7 lead before sending in the backups. Sand Springs ended the night with a 13-0 fourth quarter shutout. The game was the second and final installment of a home-and-home series. Greenwood won last year’s meeting 49-13.

The visitors scored on their first three possessions and blocked a punt for a touchdown to take a 29-0 lead before the Sandite defense made a stop. Sand Springs punted its first five possessions.

Senior quarterback Jace Presley was 31-45-307-1, accounting for 76% of the Bulldog offense and four touchdowns. He threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Treyton Dawson on the opening drive, then hit LD Richmond for a two-point pass.

Sand Springs caught a lucky break after punting their second possession when the ball deflected off a Bulldog and Bryson Chase recovered it. They were once again forced to a three-and-out, however, and the Bulldogs scored six plays later on a 42-yard strike from Presley to Caden Brown.

The Sandites marched 30 yards on their next possession before things began to fall apart. Pushed back to a 3rd-and-38 at the 22, sophomore quarterback Ty Pennington tried to punt the ball away but was blocked by Coleton Erwin who took it to the house for a 22-0 lead.

Another three-and-out for Sand Springs and the Bulldogs notched their first running score on a nine-yard carry by Brown. A fumbled hike gave Greenwood possession at the Sandites’ five-yard line, but this time Defensive Captain Jerret Haley came up clutch with an interception and 29-yard return.

Greenwood wouldn’t be stymied for long, however, marching 63 yards in five plays on their next possession for a 29-yard scoring pass from Presley to Justice Randolph. Jackson Stewart’s kick made it 36-0.

Sand Springs finally hit pay dirt with 53 seconds left in the half, marching 76 yards in eleven plays, to score on a five-yard run from Blake Jones. The Bulldogs needed only 51 seconds to return the ball to the Sandite five-yard line, but the defense held strong and left the visitors wanting on the final play of the half.

Presley was eager for another score to start the second half, and hit Dawson for a 75-yard touchdown on the second play of the third quarter, then Aaron Ligon scored on a one-yard run two possessions later.

Sand Springs responded with a ten-play 80-yard drive, scoring on a 28-yard pass from Pennington to Keaton Campbell on the first play of the fourth quarter, but a two-point pass attempt fell short.

Backup QB Coleton Payton led the Bulldogs to the Sandite red zone but gave up a turnover on downs, and Sand Springs retaliated with a five-play 85-yard scoring drive, capped by 39-yard touchdown from sophomore running back Alex Turner. Greenwood was held to a quick three-and-out on their next possession, and Sand Springs made it to the Bulldogs’ 15-yard line before Braden Potter came up with a sack to end the game.

Pennington was 16-33-143-0 in his second start for the Sandites, and Campbell was his primary target with seven catches for 93 yards. Jones led the ground game with 20 carries for 124 yards. Zach Heinen connected on both of his PAT attempts and has yet to miss in his career. Haley was the leading defender with eight tackles.

The Sandites are currently celebrating their centennial season and honored their football, cheer, dance, band, and color guard alumni at halftime. Past participants were invited to tour the locker rooms, dine in the Fine Arts Building overlooking the field, and walked across the field at halftime, grouped by decade.

Phil James and Michael Bowie were named honorary co-captains and Charles Page Principal Stan Trout performed the coin toss prior to the game. James was the starting QB from 1973-1975. Bowie played on the Sandite O-Line from 2007-2009 and went on to play on the 2011 Navarro Junior College National Champion team, the 2012 Oklahoma State University Fiesta Bowl Champion team, and the 2015 Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Champion team. He currently coaches the Sandite O-Line. Trout was a three-year letterman and 1977 graduate.

Prior to the game, the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew raised $1,107 for the Sandite Cheer Team.

Both teams will kick off district action next Friday at 7:00 p.m. Greenwood will travel to Little Rock to play Hall (2-1) and Sand Springs will host No. 13 Shawnee (1-2) for homecoming.

CPHS Softball: Shawnee capitalizes on Sandite errors for 5-4 upset

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (15-9, 7-3) suffered a 5-4 upset loss to Shawnee (10-17, 4-5) Thursday afternoon after committing several key errors. Oklahoma State University-pledged junior Tatum Sparks was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, batting in all five of Shawnee’s runs.

The Sandites bested Shawnee 7-1 last month, but the Wolves have been on the up-and-up lately, dealing Owasso (17-7, 8-1) their only district loss this past weekend to kick off a three-game win streak. Sand Springs was riding an eight-game win streak before Owasso snapped it 8-3 last Tuesday.

A walk, a single, and an error loaded the bases for Shawnee in the top of the third inning, and Sparks hit a 3RBI triple for the 3-0 lead.

Sand Springs stranded loaded bases in the bottom of the third and played from the hole till the fourth. Drew Hawkins scored on a passed ball, then Rogers State University-commit Sabrina Usher hit a 2RBI double to score Reagan Rector and Madison Lee.

The Wolves got right back out front in the top of the fifth as Hallie Wilson reached on an error and Sparks hit a home run. Jolee McNally batted in Lee to make it a one-run game in the sixth and the Sandites loaded the bases again in the seventh. Aliyah Taff had the opportunity to tag up and tie it but misread the play and stayed at third. Another quick fly out secured the Shawnee victory.

Taff (7-5, 11-11) got the loss with seven hits, five strikeouts, and one walk in seven innings. The visitors split time between Stormee Reed, Baylie Enright, and Anneca Anderson. Enright got the start but gave up two hits and a walk in the first inning before being relieved by Anderson. Anderson threw four hits, two strikeouts, and two walks in three innings and was credited with the win. Reed recorded a save in the final inning with one walk and no hits.

Sand Springs softball will return to action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with a home rematch against Owasso. Shawnee will continue its district road tour at Jenks (16-6, 8-1) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
