CPHS Softball: Shawnee capitalizes on Sandite errors for 5-4 upset

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (15-9, 7-3) suffered a 5-4 upset loss to Shawnee (10-17, 4-5) Thursday afternoon after committing several key errors. Oklahoma State University-pledged junior Tatum Sparks was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, batting in all five of Shawnee’s runs.

The Sandites bested Shawnee 7-1 last month, but the Wolves have been on the up-and-up lately, dealing Owasso (17-7, 8-1) their only district loss this past weekend to kick off a three-game win streak. Sand Springs was riding an eight-game win streak before Owasso snapped it 8-3 last Tuesday.

A walk, a single, and an error loaded the bases for Shawnee in the top of the third inning, and Sparks hit a 3RBI triple for the 3-0 lead.

Sand Springs stranded loaded bases in the bottom of the third and played from the hole till the fourth. Drew Hawkins scored on a passed ball, then Rogers State University-commit Sabrina Usher hit a 2RBI double to score Reagan Rector and Madison Lee.

The Wolves got right back out front in the top of the fifth as Hallie Wilson reached on an error and Sparks hit a home run. Jolee McNally batted in Lee to make it a one-run game in the sixth and the Sandites loaded the bases again in the seventh. Aliyah Taff had the opportunity to tag up and tie it but misread the play and stayed at third. Another quick fly out secured the Shawnee victory.

Taff (7-5, 11-11) got the loss with seven hits, five strikeouts, and one walk in seven innings. The visitors split time between Stormee Reed, Baylie Enright, and Anneca Anderson. Enright got the start but gave up two hits and a walk in the first inning before being relieved by Anderson. Anderson threw four hits, two strikeouts, and two walks in three innings and was credited with the win. Reed recorded a save in the final inning with one walk and no hits.

Sand Springs softball will return to action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with a home rematch against Owasso. Shawnee will continue its district road tour at Jenks (16-6, 8-1) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
