No. 16 Choctaw (8-7) stole the second set 25-22 from Sand Springs, but fell 25-18 in game one and 15-12 in the tie-breaker. The vertically gifted Yellowjackets were tough at the net with 8 blocks to the Sandites’ 3, but the Sand Springs serving game was remarkable with 12 aces that proved to be the deciding factor in an otherwise well-balanced match.
Choctaw only led for the first two rallies of the first set. Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood put the Sandites out front with a kill and three aces for a single-handed four-point run, and her team never trailed again. The Yellowjackets only tied it twice, at 4-4 and 6-6, and the Sandites handily coasted ahead to the win.
In game two the Sandites took a 7-4 lead thanks to a six-point run with two kills each from McKenzie Harris and Cloe Campfield, and two more aces from Youngblood. They held their lead till a five-point Choctaw streak at 17-17, and soon fell behind. They trailed 23-20 till Madison Blaylock and Youngblood knocked down kills to make it a one-point match, but Kenzie Stover notched a kill for the Yellowjackets and Youngblood’s next attack traveled OB to end the set.
Game three was closely fought, but the Sandites never once trailed, and the only tie was 0-0. Youngblood ended the match with her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 12 kills with 10 digs and 6 aces. Madison Burris had a team-high 9 assists, and Blaylock had a team-high 14 digs. Tana Bateson and Eliya Jennings led the Yellowjackets with 7 kills apiece.
No. 20 Enid (8-11) caught the Sandites off guard in the next match. After beating the Pacers 25-12, 25-6, and 25-13 just two weeks ago, Sand Springs wasn’t expecting to have such difficulty this time around. They still got the 2-0 sweep, but by much closer scores of 26-24 and 25-19.
Enid led for much of the first set after a five-point run and Gabi Cotarelo ace gave them a 7-4 advantage. The Sandites couldn’t get out of their own way with errors, and didn’t reclaim the lead till the second-to-last rally of the game. Campfield tied it at 21-21 with an ace, but followed it with a service error, then D’Sani Levy aced for the Pacers. A kill from Hanna Brinley left the Pacers needing only one more point for the win, but Youngblood and Payton Robbins scored kills to tie it and a couple of Enid errors secured the Sandite victory.
The Pacers took an early lead in set two as well, but this time the Sandites tied it much earlier after a three-score run from Youngblood at 11-11. Cotarelo hit back-to-back kills for Enid, but Harris and Youngblood scored for the 15-13 lead. The set tied at 15-15 and 16-16 before Sand Springs won eight of the final eleven rallies.
Youngblood had yet another double-double, once again with 12 kills and 10 digs. Raylynn Mong had a team-high 13 assists. Levy and Cotarelo led the Pacers with 3 kills apiece.
Sand Springs will play Class 5A No. 6 Carl Albert (19-5) in the first round of the Gold Bracket while No. 6 Mustang (19-4) will take on 4A No. 2 Oklahoma Christian (17-2).
