CPHS Football: Q&A with Head Coach Dustin Kinard - Season Preview

The Charles Page High School varsity football team kicked off the season this past Saturday in Mansfield, Texas with a 41-7 loss in the 2nd Annual Border Brawl.

The Sandites are taking a bye week before beginning a three-game home series.

Two quarterbacks are still dueling for the starting position following the season-opening loss. Senior Braden Foster scored both of the team’s touchdowns in the final preseason scrimmage and was given the start in Mansfield, but was held to a 7-15-46-2 performance and relieved at halftime. Sophomore Ty Pennington was 6-14-45-0 in the second half for the team’s only touchdown and will be getting the start against Putnam City with Foster at backup.

13th-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard says that the QB competition will continue until Homecoming against Shawnee, and he will name the starter prior to District action beginning. Kinard owns a 63-68 record as the second-longest tenured coach in Sand Springs history. This is the first time in his career that quarterback competition has carried over into the regular season. The position is a historic strong point for Sand Springs and four of Kinard’s six QBs have gone on to play at the collegiate level.

Which players do you expect to be leaders this season?

“Josh Fincannon, Jarrett Haley.”

Haley is a 6’1” 175-pound senior defensive back. He amassed 45 tackles last year with 5 pass breakups and was named Defensive Captain for the 2019 season. He led the team with 10 tackles and 2 breakups in Saturday’s season opener.

At 6’2” and 220 pounds, Fincannon is a staple on the offensive line and was selected as an Offensive team Captain for his senior year.

Which newcomers do you expect to make a difference?

“Brooks Dudley.”

What the 5’9” 205-pound sophomore lacks in stature, he makes up for with explosive energy on both the gridiron, and the wrestling mat. Dudley only played five games last year but totaled 15 tackles and made an interception in his varsity debut as a freshman. Dudley was second on the team in Saturday’s season opener with 6 tackles.

Team strengths and weaknesses going into the season?

Strengths: “Offensive line has 3 returning starters.”

Weaknesses: “Young on Defense.”

Goals/Expectations for the year?

“Play-offs, because you can’t win it if you’re not in it.”

The Sandites have made the post-season seven times under Kinard, with semifinal appearances in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and a State Championship appearance in 2015.

Do you have any particular teams circled on the schedule?

“Always Sapulpa.”

The Highway 97 rivalry spans 92 games over 97 years and has been played continuously since 1930. Sapulpa owns a 44-43-5 lead, but Sand Springs has won the past five meetings and is 9-3 under Kinard. The series hasn’t been tied since 1944 and the Chieftains have been out front since 1945.

Last year was the first time since 2011 that we were under .500 in the regular season and failed to make the playoffs. However, we took Shawnee to overtime and had fourth quarter leads against Muskogee and Bartlesville. What do we need to do to win our toss-up games this year and finish strong in the fourth?

“Stay healthy and play one side of the ball for linemen.”

Do you have a particular coaching style/philosophy?

“Hold them accountable and that we control our attitude and effort everyday.”

Who are some of your coaching influences?

“My father - who always said you be a man of your word and do what you say you’re going to do, and do it to the best of your ability.”

What is your life like outside of coaching/teaching? Hobbies, interests, family?

“I love to travel with my wife.”

CPHS Softball: Mackenzie Bechtold shuts out Sapulpa 10-0, strikes out seven

Charles Page High School senior Mackenzie Bechtold (3-1, 7-1) pitched her second shutout of the season Thursday afternoon at the Sandite Softball Complex, helping her team to a 10-0 district win over their Highway 97 rivals from Sapulpa (4-12, 1-7). She threw seven strikeouts, no walks, and four hits in the five-inning run-rule win.

Rogers State University-commit Sabrina Usher led the team offensively with a triple and a home run for three runs and five RBI.

The Chieftains got off to a rough start right out of the gate, giving up three walks and two errors in the top of the first for a 3-0 deficit. Madison Lee, Jolee McNally, and Usher all scored. Usher batted in Bechtold and Lee with her second-inning triple, then came in on an error to make it 6-0.

Makenna Skaggs hit an RBI single in the fourth to score McNally, then Usher scored the final three runs with a homer over the center field fence.

Sand Springs (9-7, 5-1) is currently third in district standings. They will compete this weekend at a tough Choctaw Tournament. Sapulpa will host Jenks Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites throttle Enid 3-0 on the road

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (11-7) traveled to Enid Thursday evening and picked up their first road win with a 3-0 sweep. The Sandites defeated the Pacers 25-12, 25-6, and 25-13 in non-conference action at the Northern Oklahoma College Mabee Center.

The Pacers took an early 5-2 lead in game one after an ace from Catherine Cunningham and a kill from D’Sani Levy. Devree Youngblood tied it with a kill at 7-7 and gave her team the lead when she combined on a block with Vanessa Wyrick. The home team never again led in any of the three sets.

Sand Springs closed out the first game on a seven-point streak, then won the first four rallies of game two. The Pacers made it a one-point game with an ace from Evencilla Malolo, but the visitors went on runs of seven, six, and five points in the lopsided second game. The second string saw ample gameplay in the set and Sophie Singleton, Payton Robbins, and Jacelyn Smith all recorded kills.

Enid prevented any significant runs in the third set, but still couldn’t keep up with the potent Sandite offense. Youngblood scored four kills in the set, including three of the final five points.

Cloe Campfield led all scorers with her second-straight double-double, scoring ten kills and thirteen digs. Madison Blaylock led the team in digs with sixteen and in aces with three. Madison Burris led in assists with twelve. Fourteen Sandites saw action and nine scored points in the easy win.

Levy led the Pacers in scoring with five kills and their only block. She also sang the national anthem prior to the match.

Enid recognized their junior high volleyball programs between sets. One player from the 7th Grade team and one player from the 8th Grade team went head-to-head in a contest to see who could make the most in-bounds serves in one minute.

Sand Springs volleyball will play a crucial conference road game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Jenks (7-2, 3-0). The Pacers will host Piedmont (2-9) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites improve to 10-0 at home, Campfield scores 19 in 3-1 win over Muskogee

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (10-7) continued their home winning streak Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House, topping Muskogee 3-1 in Frontier Valley Conference action. The Sandites are undefeated 10-0 on their home court this season and are 3-1 in league play.

Senior standout Cloe Campfield scored a team-high fifteen kills, followed by Devree Youngblood with nine. Raylynn Mong led the team in assists with eighteen, while Madison Burris had a team-high eleven digs and seventeen assists.

Muskogee struggled defensively in the first set but made only six errors, allowing them to compete closely with the home team till the final rallies. The match tied eight times and Muskogee led three times before falling behind on a service error at 12-11 and never recovering. They hung tight till 18-17, then Sand Springs went on a seven-rally streak with a pair of aces from Mong to secure the win.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair with Sand Springs coming back from a 4-1 deficit to a 5-4 lead. Three straight scores from Youngblood made it 11-8, then the Roughers went on a run with an ace from Chloe Lamont for the 13-12 advantage. Campfield tied it, Paige Irwin took back the lead, and the Roughers then went on a seven-straight win streak with four aces from Lexie Reynolds to put the set well out of reach for the home team. Jacelyn Smith broke the streak but Jenna Winters and Alexis Boyd knocked back kills for the win.

Sand Springs had little difficulty in round three with aces from Madison Blaylock, blocks from Vanessa Wyrick and Smith, kills from Gillian Wicker and Sophie Singleton, and plenty of time for the second string. They led by as much as 22-12 before Wicker secured the 25-18 win.

Muskogee took a 4-0 lead in the final game before the Sandites surged back to make it 6-5. It was back and forth from there and the game tied seven times with four lead changes, but Sand Springs never trailed after 8-7.

The Roughers had two stars in Irwin and Alex Boyd, who had fourteen and thirteen kills, respectively. Reynolds had a game-high five aces.

Sand Springs will travel to Enid (6-7) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for a non-conference match, and Muskogee will compete at the Hulbert Tournament this Friday.

Oklahoma High School Football Rankings: Class 6A-II Week One

1. Bixby (1-0).

   • The defending State Champions went 12-1 last season for their fourth title in the past five years and are riding a thirteen-game win streak after a Week Zero 77-44 shootout at Mansfield Timberview. The Spartans won three fumbles and an interception for a 49-26 first-half lead. Mason Williams threw eight touchdowns with six to Brennan Presley, and totaled 435 yards passing.

   • Bixby will travel to Jenks (1-0) Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Last year they were defeated 28-14 by the Trojans.

2. Stillwater (0-0).

   • Coming off a 12-1 season that ended in the State Finals, last year’s top offense is led by returning star quarterback Gunnar Gundy who passed for 2,420 yards and 25 touchdowns with only five interceptions.

   • Stillwater will travel to Edmond Memorial (0-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They rolled over the Bulldogs 61-18 last season.

3. Midwest City (0-1).

   • The Bombers went 9-3 last year and were riding a six-game win streak before falling to Bixby in the semifinals. They took an early lead in their Week Zero matchup with Bentonville but were left in the dust after the second quarter, falling 54-21.

   • Midwest City will host their cross-town rivals, the defending 5A Champs from Carl Albert (0-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m.

4. Booker T. Washington (0-1).

   • As a freshman Gentry Williams took his team to an 8-4 record and a six-game win streak before falling to Stillwater in last season’s semifinals. In Week Zero they were shutout for the first time in three years, 19-0 by North Little Rock and held to only 100 yards of offense.

   • The Hornets will travel to Bishop Kelley (0-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They topped the Comets 24-14 last season.

5. Del City (0-0).

   • Del City was solid in its move-up to 6A last season, going 7-4 and qualifying for the playoffs.

   • The Eagles will host Bishop McGuinness (0-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They rolled the Irish 47-7 last year.

6. Lawton (0-0).

   • The Wolverines went 6-5 last season with the third-best offense in the division, but gave up more than 30 points a game.

   • Lawton will travel to Burkburnett, Texas (1-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

7. Sapulpa (0-0).

   • The Chieftains earned their first winning record since 2013, going 7-4 last year behind Texas Christian University-commit Eli Williams who had 1200 yards passing and 900 on the ground.

   • Sapulpa will travel to Edison Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Eagles 34-13 last year.

8. Muskogee (0-0).

   • The Roughers went 6-5 last season and had a top ten offense, but gave up as many points as they scored.

   • Muskogee will travel to McAlester Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Buffalo 35-14 last year.

9. Choctaw-Nicoma (1-0).

   • The Yellowjackets missed the playoffs last year with a 4-6 record but started the new season strong with a 49-21 win over Shawnee. Choctaw led 28-0 by halftime and used an onside kick to score twice before the Wolves’ Offense ever took the field. Thad Williams was 14-26-287 with two touchdowns.

   • Choctaw will take a bye week before traveling to Lawton Eisenhower.

10. Bartlesville (0-0).

    • The Bruins went 4-6 last year and are rebuilding under their fourth head coach in as many years. Senior Ben Winters passed for 1500 yards last season.

    • Bartlesville will host Claremore Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Zebras 21-14 last season.

11. Edmond Deer Creek (0-0).

    • The Antlers went 4-6 last year and are still looking for their first winning record in 6A. They will host Southmoore Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Sabercats won that game 27-10.

12. Sand Springs (0-1).

    • The Sandites went 3-7 last season after six-straight years of playoff berths. They have yet to name QB1 for the season, and fell 41-7 at Mansfield Summit.

    • Sand Springs will take a bye before hosting Putnam City.

13. Shawnee (0-1).

    • Shawnee went 2-8 in their first season of 6A-II. In Week Zero they fell 49-21 to Choctaw and were held to only 56 rushing yards. Dre Evans passed 17-33-172-3.

    • The Wolves will host Guthrie (1-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Jays won last year’s game 42-7.

14. Putnam City West (0-0).

    • The Patriots won only one game last season. They will travel to Duncan Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Demons won 31-7 last year.

15. Ponca City (0-0).

    • The Wildcats are riding a fifteen-game losing streak and haven’t had a winning season since 2005. Scott Harmon is in his second year at the helm.

    • Ponca will travel to Enid (0-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m.. The Plainsmen beat Ponca 20-13 last year.

16. Putnam City (0-0).

    • The Pirates went 0-10 last year and averaged only 5 points per game. They will play their cross-town rivals from Putnam North Friday at 7:00 p.m. North won a 33-0 shutout last season.

The Charles Page High School varsity football team (0-1) took a solid thumping Saturday night in Mansfield, Texas, falling 41-7 to Summit High School in the second annual Border Brawl interstate showcase.

Five members of the Frontier Valley Conference spent their opening weekend in Texas, taking on the five high schools of the Mansfield School District. Jenks, Broken Arrow and Bixby came away with wins, while Sand Springs and Union took losses, marking the second year with another Oklahoma victory.

The Sandites haven’t won an opening weekend game since 2015 after beginning a recent tradition of battling out-of-state powerhouses to start the season. Last year they hosted Mansfield Summit and fell 41-28.

The Jaguars pummeled their visitors in the first half, jumping out to a 27-0 lead with 327 yard of total offense, while holding the Sandites to only 86. Sand Springs scored its lone touchdown in the third quarter, and the Jags scored fourteen points before a scoreless fourth stanza.

The game pitted three first-year quarterbacks, each trying to fill the shoes of college-bound stars. Junior Jaguar Kainen McKinney went 14-18-219-1 with two touchdowns, while Sand Springs split time between two players.

Senior Braden Foster was given the start for Sand Springs, but wasn’t named the starter for the season. He went 7-15-46-2 and was replaced at halftime by sophomore Ty Pennington, who went 6-14-45-0 for the only Sandite touchdown.

Mansfield forced a turnover on downs on the Sandites’ first possession, and McKinney threw a 28-yard pass to Jaelon Travis to cap an eight-play 48 yard drive. Sand Springs responded by marching all the way to the Jaguar four-yard line before turning the ball over once again.

Travis had another successful drive with a 6-yard scoring pass to Hal Presley, then the Jaguars got fancy with an onside kick and a trick play for yet another score. McKinney tossed a lateral to Presley who hoofed it downfield to Travis for the 21-0 lead.

David Cottrell picked off Foster two plays later, setting up a nine-play 49-yard drive and a 2-yard keeper. This time Koby Russel missed the PAT, but he was 6-of-7 for the night.

Sand Springs found the red zone once again, but Foster was picked off by Xavier Toliver. Bryson Chase snagged the first Sandite interception of the season shortly before halftime.

The home team kicked off the second half with a 6-yard touchdown run from McKinney. The teams traded punts till Mansfield got the ball back for an 8-yard scoring run by Calvion Porter. Russel’s kick gave the Jaguars their final point of the night and a 41-0 lead.

The Sandites averted the shutout on their final possession of the third quarter, marching 70 yards in six plays, thanks to a 50-yard run from Tyyee Atkison. Pennington connected with Keaton Campbell from five yards out with seven seconds left in the quarter.

Presley ended with 120 yards on six receptions for Mansfield, and Jaydon Lott was the leading rusher with nine carries for 96 yards. Zach Heinen handled kicking and punting duties for the Sandites and made his first varsity PAT with ease. Senior captain Jerret Haley led the Sandite defense with ten tackles and two pass breakups.

Sand Springs will take a bye week before hosting Putnam City Friday the 13th at 7:00 p.m. Summit will travel to Seguin High School (0-1) Thursday in Arlington.
