CPHS Baseball: Sandites throttle Muskogee 15-0 and 7-2 in double-header

Riley Rutledge set the single-game season record for Sand Springs with eleven strikeouts.

After dropping two district games to Jenks earlier this week, the Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (20-8, 6-4) bounced back with a pair of dominant wins against Muskogee High School (3-25, 1-11) Wednesday evening.

The Sandites previously took a 14-0 lead against the Roughers before being rained out in the bottom of the third inning three weeks earlier. They picked up where they left off Wednesday.

Sand Springs loaded the bases right away with two walks and an error. Ty Steelman batted in Riley Rutledge for a 15-0 lead. The rest of the game was uneventful and the Sandites secured the run-rule victory in the fifth inning.

Braden Askew (4-3, 7-5) got the win on the mound, pitching a no hitter with no walks and six strikeouts in the three innings played in March. Cale Savage (0-0, 1-1) pitched the Wednesday continuation and threw two strikeouts and two walks.

Game two went the distance and wasn't as much of a blowout as their first meeting, but was still a handy Sand Springs victory at 7-2.

Tyler Ash kicked things off with a first inning double and scored the opening run on a groundout from Cal Watkins. Pryce Jackson tied it up in the top of the fourth with a double to score Devonte Gandy.

The Sandites jumped back out front soon after when Watkins scored on an error and Askew brought in Garrett McCallie on a single.

Sand Springs loaded the bases with a trio of walks in the fifth. Ash singled in Kameron Adcock, Braden Millican scored on a ground ball from Watkins, and McCallie and Ty Steelman scored on errors to make it 7-1.

Max Rosson reached on an error in the top of the seventh and came in on a double from Kaunor Ashley, but Rutledge caught a line drive on the next play to secure the win.

Rutledge (1-0) pitched the first five innings and threw eleven strikeouts, four hits, and two walks for his first career win. Tyler Ash (2-1) tossed one hit and two strikeouts in relief.

Sand Springs Baseball will return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m. in a non-district rivalry bout with Sapulpa (18-7). Youth players in uniform will receive free admission to Youth Night and will get to join the varsity squad on the field for the National Anthem.
