The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (10-6, 1-2) picked up their sixth-straight win and their first district win Monday evening in Broken Arrow, dealing the Tigers (9-9, 4-3) an 8-6 loss behind a perfect batting performance by Riley Rutledge.

Senior Trey Wolf pitched a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first and the home team went to work with three hits and two runs before Braden Askew (2-2, 5-4) found his groove. The Sandite struck out two and sent a ground ball to first base to bring the inning to a close.

Broken Arrow scored two more in the second inning with a home run from Matt Kaiser for a 4-0 lead before Askew got the visitors on the board with a solo home run in the third. Rutledge doubled, Cale Savage was hit by pitch, and Kyler Copeland singled to load the bases. Rutledge scored on a ground ball from John Miller, then Savage scored on an error to make it a one-run game.

Manny Duran scored Kaiser on a single in the fourth, but a big fifth inning gave the Sandites their first lead. Askew singled, Rutledge doubled, then both came in on a double from Savage to tie it up. Savage scored on a ground out by Copeland. In the top of the sixth Askew singled in Ty Steelman and Cal Watkins scored on a sacrifice fly by Savage.

The Tigers tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles and a run by Chandler Suddath, but it wasn't enough.

Askew got the win on the mound with eight hits, four strikeouts, and two walks in four innings. Steelman (2-0, 2-1) picked up a save with two hits, one strikeout, and no walks in three innings. Rutledge hit three doubles on three at-bats with two runs and two RBI.

The two teams will meet against Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in Sand Springs.

CPHS Track: Boys place second at Owasso with several champions

The Charles Page High School track and field teams made a strong showing at the Owasso High School Invitational this past weekend, crowning champions in four events. The boys' team came in second place and the Lady Sandites took fifth, while both teams from the host school brought home the gold.

The boys' relay teams have been excelling this season, and Saturday was no exception. They placed fourth in the 400-meter relay in 43.37 seconds, their fastest time in many years, and won the 3200 in 8:26.95 with a ten-second lead on Owasso. The boys got to try their legs out at some new competitions as well, placing third in the 1600 medley and second in the 4000 medley.

Junior standout Jacob Smith shaved six seconds off his personal record in the 3200, winning his first gold medal in 10:26.59. Danny Murray also topped his previous best, finishing fifth in 11:03.28.

Joel Mackey won his second 200-meter run dash of the year in 22.51 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of the runner-up. Freshman up-and-comer Joseph Mattison came in fourth in 23.86, just a hundredth of a second shy of his personal best. Mattison also placed ninth in the long jump with a personal best 18'03.00".

Mason Shipman came in runner-up in both hurdle distances, finishing the 110 in 17.06 seconds and the 300 in 42.89. Alex Newport set a new personal best in the 300, finishing tenth in 48.58.

The Sandites went to work in the third inning with two singles, two walks, and two runs. Tyler Ash scored on a passed ball, and Watkins scored on an error for the 4-1 advantage. The Hornets battled right back, however, with two hits in the fourth and benefited from two errors to make it 4-3.

Watkins came up big in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Adcock and Malachi Burks on a fly ball to double the Hornets, but they had their biggest inning in retaliation to tie it at 6-6 with three runs and a walk.

CPHS Wrestling: Head Coach Kelly Smith resigns for private sector job

Charles Page High School lost its third Head Coach this school year when wrestling coach Kelly Smith announced his intentions to resign Friday.

Head Volleyball Coach Janna Green left Sand Springs Public Schools for a private sector coaching position after the fall season. Girls' Basketball Head Coach Dustin Morrow stepped down from coaching to spend more time with his family earlier this month, but will remain on staff as a science teacher. Now, Smith is leaving coaching and teaching to work in insurance.

Smith cited unreasonably low State teaching wages as a primary reason for his decision, along with a desire to spend more time with his family. The successful coach has spent years running a lawncare business to compliment his income, but after seventeen years as Head Coach, he has decided it's time to move on. "This is a young man's game," said Smith. "I don't have the time to be out mowing lawns all year while also putting in the hours to maintain a successful program. I have to put my family first."

Smith's family might keep him in the coaching business a little longer, at least on a part-time basis. His son, Mitchell, is a talented up and comer in the junior high circuit. But while he will still be around cheering on the Sandites from the stands, the district will have to find fresh blood to take the reigns.

Smith led the Sandites to their first-ever Dual State Championship in 2017 and followed it up with their first State Tournament title since 1971. The pair of championships were the first for Sand Springs in any sport since 1994. Nine Sandites won individual titles under his leadership, including five in the 2017 season. Even after losing four of those five, the Sandites placed third in the 6A State Tournament this past season with a 13-4 dual record.

"I got to live the dream," said Smith. "I got to take over for my coach and mentor. It's been a dream."

CPHS Soccer: Sapulpa sweeps Highway 97 Rivalry 6-1 in both matches

The Charles Page High School soccer teams suffered a pair of Highway 97 Rivalry defeats Tuesday night at the Westside Sports Complex. Sapulpa won both the boys and girls matches 6-1.

The Sapulpa girls (4-2, 1-0) snapped a two-game losing streak to kick off district action against the Lady Sandites (3-2, 0-1). Khaige English's first goal was nullified on an offsides call, but she made up for it less than a minute later to take the lead at 6:57. Kayln Anderson added another at 8:36, and Abby Graham had a great shot at 14:50 that was saved by Alison Day.

Julia Wolf scored with an assist from Kyle Taylor at 23:20, but it would be the only goal of the game for the visiting Lady Sandites. The Sandites trailed 2-1 at halftime and suffered a second half shutout. Stormie Ramsey scored two goals for Sapulpa, one with an assist from Graham, while Graham scored two and nearly had a third as she bounced a header off the crossbar.

Ethan Castillo kicked off boys' action for Sapulpa (5-1, 1-0) with a goal at 3:25, then assisted Caleb Walsh a few minutes later. Jack Bratcher got the visitors on the board at 8:54. Castillo had an offside goal nullified at 10:47, then Jaden Weiser nearly tied it up at 14:14 but the shot traveled just inches over the crossbar. Castillo scored on a penalty kick at 32:24 and Jaxon Zamudio scored at 39:01 for a 4-1 halftime advantage.

In the second half Walsh scored with an assist from Tj Hale at 65:16 and Castillo made it a hat trick at 69:30. Bratcher nearly had a brace, netting a header at 66:59, but was called offsides.

The Sandite boys (4-4, 0-1) were coming off a 3-1 win at Nathan Hale (2-2) that saw goals from Bratcher, Luke Jeffus, and Weiser. They will return to action next Tuesday with a district home game against Edmond Santa Fe (4-2, 1-0).

The Lady Sandites will play Collinsville (0-4) Thursday at 11:45 a.m. in the first round of the Stilwell Bank of Commerce Tournament. They will then play either Tahlequah (4-1) or Heavener (2-2) at 4:45 p.m.

The Sapulpa boys will play Daniel Webster (5-1) Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the first round of the Chieftain Classic. The girls will play Grove (5-1) at noon.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites run-rule Greenway, lead Muskogee 14-0 in three-inning rainout

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (6-6, 0-2) is on a roll lately, winning two of their last three games by double-digit run rule. After topping Arizona teams Coconino and Greenway by ten runs apiece, they took a 14-0 lead on Muskogee (2-9, 1-3) in a return to district action Monday evening in Sand Springs. The game was rained out in the top of the third inning, but the Sandites will have to finish it later.

The Sandites finished the Best of the West Tournament with a 2-3 record, capped by a 10-0 shutout of Greenway High School (2-8) in Phoenix, Arizona. John Miller (2-0) pitched a perfect game with no hits, no walks, and four strikeouts in the five inning run-rule victory. Miller has pitched just over nine innings this season and surrendered only one hit so far.

Sand Springs took the lead right out of the gate with a sacrifice fly from Cale Savage to score Ty Ash. Braden Millican hit a single in the third inning and scored on a wild pitch, then Savage doubled to score Cal Watkins. Riley Rutledge doubled in the fourth and scored on a sacrifice by Millican.

Most of the damage came in the top of the fifth as the Sandites loaded the bases with an error, a single, and a walk. Kyler Copeland singled in Braden Askew, Kameron Adcock singled in Rutledge and Garrett McCallie, then they reloaded the bases with a single from Millican and a walk. Adcock scored on a single from Brock Youngblood and Millican walked in for the 10-0 lead before the Demons finally caught a fly out to end the melee.

Miller pitched a strikeout, Watkins sent a groundball to Rutledge at first, and Ash caught a fly ball in center field to secure the victory.

Torrential downpour brought an early end to what was supposed to be a district double header against Muskogee High School. The game was called off in the bottom of the third, postponed till Tuesday, then postponed again on Tuesday morning. The games will have to be made up at a later time.

Askew (1-2, 4-4) got off to a great start on the mound, striking out two in the top of the first, one in the second, and three in the third, with no hits or walks.

The Roughers walked three straight in the first inning. Askew singled in Ash and Malachi Burks, Rutledge scored Savage on a sacrifice, then Copeland singled in McCallie for a 4-0 lead.

Steelman doubled in the second and scored on an error, Savaged singled in Burks, then Rutledge doubled to score Savage. McCallie, Rutledge, Michael Miller, and Adcock walked in, then Burks hit a sacrifice fly to score Millican and Savage doubled to score Steelman and Ash to make it 14-0.

Askew struck out the side in the third before the rain got too bad to continue.

The Sandites will return to action Thursday at Pryor High School in the first round of the Tiger/Zebra Classic. They will play Coweta at 1:30 p.m., then will play at Claremore on Friday and Saturday.
