The Charles Page High School boys' soccer team (2-1) improved to a winning record Friday afternoon at LaFortune Stadium, topping Northwest Classen (1-2) in the first round of the Edison Green & White Tournament.

The Sandites and Knights went scoreless through regulation. Both teams took an increasing number of shots as time drew shorter, but neither could hit paydirt.

Luke Jeffus took a shot with thirteen minutes left and the goalie nearly fumbled the ball, then the Sandites got a pair of corner kicks in the last few minutes but couldn’t get a good drop due to a strong headwind.

The Knights worked their way down to the Sandite box in the last minute but Jeffus managed to snag a steal and keep them at bay till time ran out.

Jeffus, Jack Bratcher, David Fancher, and Cameron Summerton all made their overtime penalty kicks, while freshman keeper Xander Quiroga blocked two Classen kicks and got a hand on a third.

The boys will return to action in the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. against Edison Preparatory School (1-1).

CPHS Basketball: No. 2 Norman North fends off Sandites 51-44, Savage scores 14

The Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team made their first State Tournament appearance in 55 years Thursday night at Catoosa High School and nearly upset Class 6A No. 2 ranked Norman North (24-3).

No. 10 Sand Springs (20-7) led the Timberwolves 21-18 at halftime, and were only four points behind in the final minute of the game before Norman North pulled away with free throws.

Both teams started out playing the deep ball, Matthew Price drawing first blood for the Sandites. Juwan White hit a layup on the Timberwolves’ third possession, then Drake Stoops hit a three for the lead and followed it with a free throw. Cale Savage hit a layup for the Sandites but Shemar Smith dunked in retaliation. Smith scored back-to-back then Cale Savage drained a three to end the first period trailing 10-8.

Davon Richardson tied it up with a putback, Colt Savage and White traded free throws, then Price made a freebie for the 13-12 lead. Richardson and Josh Robinson exchanged twos then Colt Savage and Kendrick Williams added free throws. Layups from White and Stoops tied it at 18-18, but Cale Savage had the final say of the half with a last second three.

Richardson kicked off the second half with a pair of free throws, but three-pointers from Jalen Crutchfield, Stoops, and White pushed the Timberwolves back out front at 35-26 with a ten-point run before Richardson broke it up. Cale Savage scored another last-second three to make it 35-31.

Colt Savage and Smith traded layups in the fourth, then Price drained a three to make it a one-point game, briefly. White scored a two, Stoops made a three, and Smith dunked for a 44-36 lead. Colt Savage scored two from the stripe, Smith made a two, then Colt Savage and Cole Durkee combined for four more free throws.

With only 47 seconds to play, the Sandites turned to desperation fouls. The Timberwolves made the most of them, pulling ahead to 51-42 before Colt Savage finished his high school career with an uncontested layup in the final moments.

The Savage brothers were the only two Sandites in double digits. Colt, a University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior, posted a double-double with fourteen points and eleven rebounds, while Cale scored eleven points. Richardson finished with eight points and ten rebounds. Stoops led all scorers with seventeen points, followed by White with fourteen and Smith with thirteen.

The Timberwolves will get to play the big stage at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center Friday at 4:30 p.m. against No. 3 Putnam City North (23-5). The Putnam North Panthers prevailed 43-41 over No. 4 Union (22-5) in their quarterfinal matchup.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites fall 51-38 to Choctaw at State, Kersgieter scores 18

For the second-straight year the Charles Page High School Girls’ Basketball Team (18-8) made it to the 6A State Tournament. This year the No. 13 ranked Lady Sandites overcame a first-quarter thumping to give the defending State Champions a run for their money before running out of steam in the fourth quarter against No. 6 Choctaw High School (23-5).

Choctaw won the opening tipoff and never looked back, building a massive lead in a turnover-ridden opening stanza. Aaliyah Llanusa and Destiny Johnson traded layups, then the Yellowjackets went on a run. Bailey Golden scored back-to-back from both three and two-point range, then Makayla White made it 11-4 before Isabella Regalado hit a three. That didn’t slow Choctaw down any and they rattled off nine more points before Johnson hit a jump shot to break up the streak. Llanusa had the final say of the quarter and took a 22-9 advantage into the second.

The Sandites wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and Johnson and Regalado hit back-to-back threes to open the second period. Golden and Trinity Gooden hit a pair of twos, then the turnovers began to sway in the Sandites’ favor. University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter scored thrice from the field and twice from the charity stripe to cut it to a manageable 26-23 halftime deficit.

Golden kicked off the second half, Kersgieter responded, Llanusa and Jordan Saxton scored back-to-back, then Kersgieter went on a five-point run. The Yellowjackets rattled off five of their own, then Johnson scored in transition to keep it close. With under a minute in the quarter, Johnson went to the bench with her fourth foul.

Kersgieter made a free throw to start the fourth period, Golden and Kersgieter traded twos, then Choctaw ran away with it. The Yellowjackets scored ten straight before Johnson hit a three, then Crusoe tacked on a pair of free throws to wrap it up.

Choctaw will play the winner of No. 1 Putnam City West vs. No. 10 Bixby Friday at noon at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center.

CPHS Basketball: 6A State Tournament Preview

After a five-year rebuilding period, the Charles Page High School basketball program has pulled a complete about-face and sent both the boys and girls teams to the State Tournament, possibly for the first time in Sand Springs history.

In the 2012-2013 season, the boys and girls went a combined 3-41. Both were coming off back-to-back winless seasons in conference action. Eric Savage took over the boys' program, moving up from the 5A circuit where he won three State Championships at Tulsa Memorial High School. Dustin Morrow, a homegrown Sandite, took over the girls' program.

The Lady Sandites made their last State Tournament appearance in 2010 and won their only State Title in 1994. The boys hadn't made a State Tournament appearance since 1963 and have never won a title.

Morrow's squad picked up ten wins in its first season and peaked at 24-2 last year with a Frontier Valley Conference Championship and State Tournament appearance, falling 64-54 to Deer Creek in the Semifinals. Morrow is 80-44 in his head coaching career.

Savage's eight wins in his first season were as many as the Sandites recorded in the prior three seasons combined. In 2016 they finished their first winning season since 2000 and this year they made their first Area finals appearance since 1970 to punch their ticket to State. Savage is 65-61 at Sand Springs and 370-154 overall.

Frontier Valley sends four teams to Girls' State Tournament

They will meet No. 4 Edmond Santa Fe (20-6) in the quarterfinals, Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The two are 4-0 against mutual opponents with Bartlesville averaging an 11.25-point victory and Santa Fe winning by a six-point average.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites top Midwest City 8-3, drop two to Enid

Garrett McCallie scored two runs against Midwest City.

The Charles Page High School baseball team (1-3, 0-2) is off to a rough start to the 2018 season. After notching their first win over the Midwest City Bombers Saturday afternoon, they dropped back-to-back district battles against the Enid Plainsmen.

3/3/2018 Sand Springs 8 Midwest City 3

Conner Dennis (0-0, 1-0) got the start on the mound, but John Miller (1-0) got the win.

Midwest City (1-3) took a two-run lead into the bottom of the fifth before Lucas Adcock singled in Tyler Ash and Garrett McCallie scored on a ground-out from Ethan Sartin.

The Sandites took the lead in the sixth inning, loading the bases with a double from Riley Rutledge, a single from Kameron Adcock, and a walk from Ash.

Kyler Copeland singled in courtesy runner Michael Miller, Lucas Adcock walked in Kameron Adock, Cal Watkins walked in Ash, and Ty Steelman doubled to score Garrett McCallie and Lucas Adcock. Watkins scored the final run of the inning on a fly ball from Braden Askew before a double-play ended the melee.

The Bombers tried to rally in the top of the seventh and scored one more run thanks to an error at the mound. Singles from Kaleb Bedford and Devan Johnson loaded the bases, but Riley Rutledge sealed the victory with a strikeout.

3/5/2018 Enid 4 Sand Springs 1

The Enid Plainsmen (3-0, 2-0) hosted the Sandites on Monday and took an early one-run lead thanks to a pair first-inning errors. Brett Russell scored three more runs for the Plainsmen in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a 2RBI double and scoring on a wild pitch.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with a pair of walks and a single from Ash. Askew scored on an error to avert the shutout, but Sartin was put out at first to end the game.

Askew (0-1, 3-3) got the loss on the mound, pitching seven strikeouts, three hits, and one walk.

3/6/2018 Enid 7 Sand Springs 0

The Plainsmen once again came out swinging with two hits in the top of the first, scoring on an error. Bradan Pierce batted in a run in the second, Colby Jarnagan scored on an error in the fourth, then Russell doubled in another run in the fifth.

Two walks and a single loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and the Plainsmen scored one on a passed ball and another on a sacrifice.

Brock Youngblood (0-2, 6-10) got the start and the loss on the mound, pitching four strikeouts and seven hits. Miller pitched two innings and gave up one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Hilldale High School (1-2) in Muskogee.
