Sandite of the Week: Colton Washington takes gold at Stillwater track meet

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Charles Page High School Long Jumper Colton Washington was selected as Sandite of the Week for his outstanding performance at the Stillwater Pioneer Relays this past week.

Washington set a personal-best at 21'07.50", beating the runner-up by 1'00.75". His previous best was 20'07.00 at last year's Frontier Valley Conference meet.

Breaking the 20' mark at all is impressive. Last year he placed tenth in Regionals with a distance of 19'09.50. His Stillwater performance would have placed him second in last year's Regionals or eighth in the State Championship.

Click here for the full Sandite Baseball schedule and results.

Sophomore Cale Savage got the start on the mound in his career pitching debut and gave up two walks against four strikeouts in the first three innings with three hits.

Treyce Tolbert landed the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first with a double, but was left stranded. The Sandites got on the board in the bottom of the second as Garrett McCallie and Ty Steelman scored on a single from Riley Rutledge.

The Chargers tied it up in the top of the third as Brody Gibbs scored on an error and Connor Peterson doubled to score Dylan Harris. Brock Youngblood (2-2) took over on the mound and gave up a walk to load the bases, but struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Sand Springs got back in the lead right away as Hunter Greathouse, Youngblood, and Cal Watkins loaded the bases. Greathouse scored on a catcher's error, then Watkins and courtesy runner McCallie came in on a single from Steelman. Steelman stole his way around the bases and came in on a single from Rutledge for the 6-2 advantage.

Mack Thompson launched a double into left field in the bottom of the fourth, then came in on a single from Tolbert who in turn scored on a sacrifice from Greathouse. Watkins walked, Steelman singled, and Rutledge was hit by pitch to load the bases, then Wakins and Steelman scored on a single from Kyler Copeland. Josh Taber was hit by pitch to reload the bases, then Thompson rounded out the batting order and tripled to score all three. Tolbert doubled to bring in Thompson, then Greathouse singled, but the pair were left stranded.

Memorial tacked on one last run with a single from Taylor Ogden to score Harris, but Younbglood struck out the next batter to clench the victory.

Youngblood got the win on the mound with three strikeouts, two walks, and two hits.

The Sandites will return to action Monday evening at 5:30 in a district battle at Muskogee (2-12, 0-6).

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School Varsity Baseball team (10-7) hosted their arch-rivals from Sapulpa (9-6) Friday evening at the Sandite Baseball Complex and came from behind for a 6-5 payback win.

Runs: CPHS 6, Sapulpa 5.
Hits: CPHS 11, Sapulpa 4.
Errors: CPHS 1.
LOB: CPHS 10, Sapulpa 7.

The Chieftains previously defeated the Sandites 1-0 in the season debut.

The Sandites jumped on their foes early with four runs in the first inning. Mack Thompson doubled and scored on a sacrifice by Treyce Tolbert. Hunter Greathouse and Braden Askew both singled, then Greathouse came home on a single from Cale Savage. Cal Watkins scored both Savage and courtesy runner Garrett McCallie with a double.

Check out the Sandite Baseball schedule and results here.

The Chieftains got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Alan Shibley tripled to score Wyatt Sellers, then came in on a sacrifice by Andrew Merrihew. Both teams stranded loaded bases in the fifth, then Sapulpa took the lead in the top of the sixth with a double from Williams to score Shawn Holland.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Tolbert scored on a passed ball and Greathouse score on a single from Savage.

Braden Askew (1-2) got the start on the mound, pitching three hits, one strikeout, and five walks in a little under five innings. Josh Cordell (3-1) got the win with one strikeout, two walks, and one hit in just over one inning.
