CPHS Softball: Tigers clinch district title with 5-2 win over Sand Springs

Sand Springs lost a do-or-die game Thursday afternoon in Broken Arrow, falling 5-2 in the Tigers’ final district bout. After losing 5-2 the week before, the Sandites needed to win by at least three runs to have a shot at their first district title since 2015. Instead they’ll have to settle for second, which is still a solid feat.

Charles Page High School (17-6, 7-2) secured a home Regional Playoff, despite having one district game left. Even if they suffer a ten-run defeat Monday in Stillwater (16-6, 6-3), they will still have the number-two spot secure on district point-differential. They will find out their Regional opponents on Wednesday.

The Lady Sandites hold fifteen Regional titles and the current team has been to the State Tournament three years in a row. Four-straight would make the seniors only the fourth team in school history to go every year.

The Sandites struck first on Thursday with an RBI single from Jenson Arnold to score Kimi Presnell in the top of the first. The Tigers scattered four singles in the bottom of the inning, but converted only one into a run and stranded three.

Broken Arrow took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to an error and two hits, including an RBI triple from Grace Jarvis.

Presnell scored another run in the third, this time on an error, and would be the only Sandite to cross home plate.

McKayla Carney hit an RBI double in the fourth and Lexi Smith scored on an error in the sixth inning.

Madelyn Blair (7-2, 26-7) pitched all six innings for Sand Springs, throwing eight hits, two strikeouts, and two walks.

Sand Springs will finish district action Monday at 5:00 p.m. in Stillwater.

CPHS Softball: Sandites run-rule Stillwater 13-3, Usher and Presnell hit home runs

After suffering their first district loss of the season last week, the Lady Sandites could easily have fallen into a slump. Instead, they rallied to their best offensive performance of the season for a 13-3 run-rule victory over Stillwater High School (15-6, 5-3) Tuesday evening on their home field.

Stillwater is the number-three team in the district, even after the loss, but the Sandites beat them as easily as everyone else who crosses their path. The Charles Page High School softball team (17-5, 7-1) batted .483 with fourteen hits, their best percentage in the past 25 games.

Rogers State University-committed senior Kimi Presnell hit a triple and a home run, while junior Sabrina Usher hit a double and her fifth home-run of the season. Missouri State commit Jacie Taber (2-0, 31-10) got the win on the mound, giving up no runs, two hits, and one walk with three strikeouts in three innings.

Stillwater threatened early, loading the bases with two walks and an error, but Taber’s first strikeout of the night left them wanting and the Sandites came in to start the slugfest.

Makenna Skaggs bounced a double off the center field wall and was joined on base by Usher with a walk and Jenson Arnold with a single. Taber brought in Skaggs on a sacrifice and Cameron Clemons cleaned up with a 2RBI single into right field.

The Lady Sandites brought a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second and Presnell smashed a solo home run over the center field wall.

Taber stranded two hits with a strikeout in the top of the third, and Elizabeth Luttrell singled in Jolee McNally to make it 5-0.

Presnell kicked off the fourth with a triple and came in on a single from Skaggs, who in turn scored on Usher’s home run.

Julia Cottrill got the Pioneers on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and Sidney McLaughlin singled in Gracie Ore, but the Sandites surged ahead for the run-rule in the bottom of the inning.

Madison Lee scored on a wild pitch, Usher doubled in Presnell, Arnold doubled in Usher, and Clemons singled in Drew Hawkins. Taber scored on a wild pitch to secure the victory.

Madelyn Blair (7-1, 26-6) pitched the last two innings, throwing four hits, one strikeout, and one walk.

Sand Springs will return to action Thursday at Broken Arrow (27-3, 8-0), a must-have win if they hope to remain in contention for the District Title. The Tigers defeated the Sandites 2-5 in a come-from-behind seventh inning rally last Thursday.

CPHS Softball: Luttrell hits home run in 5-2 loss to Broken Arrow

The Sand Springs and Broken Arrow high school softball teams came into Tuesday evening’s matchup with undefeated district records, and the battle lived up to the hype. The Tigers came from behind for a 5-2 seventh-inning victory, scoring five runs on three errors.

Cowley County Community College-committed senior Elizabeth Luttrell hit her second home run of the season and eighth of her career in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jacie Taber reached on an error in the sixth and scored on a single from Aliyah Taff for the 2-0 Sandite lead.

The seventh inning spelled disaster for the Sandites, who gave up three straight singles to load the bases. Three errors and five runs later and Raegan Edwards grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to bring the Sandites in to bat.

The Sandites picked up a pair of walks, but the Tigers had a double-play of their own in store to bring the game to a close.

Madelyn Blair (7-1, 26-6) pitched the first four innings, throwing four hits and one walk. Taff (4-3, 4-5) got the loss with four hits, three strikeouts, and no walks in three innings.

Sand Springs Softball (16-5, 6-1) will return to action Tuesday with a district home game against Stillwater (14-5, 4-2) at 5:00 p.m. They will get a rematch with Broken Arrow (25-3, 6-0) Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (16-4, 6-0) made quick work of Ponca City (17-9, 2-5) Tuesday evening on Senior Night. The Sandites won their seventh-straight game 11-1 to remain undefeated in district action.

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma-committed senior Madelyn Blair (7-1, 26-6) got the start and the win on the mound, throwing no hits, no runs, no walks, and four strikeouts in four innings. Mackenzie Bechtold (3-0) gave up two hits and one run in the fifth and final inning.

Sabrina Usher hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first, and Makenna Skaggs hit the first home run of her career in the third. Felicity Horn scored on a ground out by Blair, Kimi Presnell doubled in Cameron Clemons, and Skaggs’s homer brought in Presnell for a 5-0 lead.

Ponca averted the shutout in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Tally Goddard to score Mackenzie Laughlin, but the Sandites piled on six more runs for the run-rule victory.

Jacie Taber hit an RBI double to score Usher, then scored on a double from Horn. Horn scored on a single from Blair, Clemons scored on a ground ball from Elizabeth Luttrell, and Skaggs hit a 2RBI single to score Blair and Presnell.

The Sandites currently lead their district with a 6-0 record, winning all six of those games by a ten-run margin. They have four district games left, two of which will go against Broken Arrow (23-3-2, 5-0).

The Lady Tigers are riding an eight-game win streak, or sixteen-straight if you ignore two tie games at an out-of-state tournament. The two top dogs will meet Thursday at 5:00 p.m. on the Sandites’ home turf.

CPHS Softball: Sandites shut out Putnam City North 10-0, twice

Strong performances from a youthful bullpen propelled the Sandites to a pair of 10-0 run-rule victories over Putnam City North High School (4-17, 0-4) Monday evening in Sand Springs. Junior Mackenzie Bechtold pitched a five-inning no-hitter in game one and sophomore Aliyah Taff threw a one-hitter in game two, which only lasted three innings.

Charles Page (15-4, 5-0) currently leads the district, but has to get past Broken Arrow (23-3, 5-0) on Thursday to take full control of the standings. They will also host Ponca City (17-8, 2-4) for Senior Night Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. They defeated the Wildcats 11-0 last week.

Jacie Taber scored Kimi Presnell and Makenna Skaggs on a hard ground ball in the bottom of the first, then Presnell doubled in Madelyn Blair in the second inning. Skaggs sacrificed to score Elizabeth Luttrell and Presnell scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.

Presnell hit her third home run of the season to score Luttrell in the fourth, Skaggs scored on a passed ball, and Taber stole home to make it 9-0. Drew Hawkins scored on a double from Luttrell to secure the victory.

Bechtold (3-0) had a career-best performance with six strikeouts and no walks. Taff (4-2, 4-4) threw one hit, three strikeouts, and one walk in game two.

Skaggs scored Presnell on a single and came in on a single from Felicity Horn, then Reagan Rector walked in on loaded bases for a 3-0 first inning lead. Jenson Arnold and Taber scored Luttrell and Skaggs on singles in the second.

An error and two walks loaded the bases in the third. Skaggs doubled in Cameron Clemons and Luttrell, then Sabrina Usher tripled to score Presnell and Skaggs. Arnold scored Usher on a single for the 10-0 lead. Taff struck out two in the final inning to secure the win.

CPHS Softball: Sandites win fourth-straight, remain undefeated in district

Kimi Presnell hit home runs in two different games last week.

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (13-4, 3-0) is riding a four-game win-streak after notching a district victory over Ponca City (17-7, 2-3) and winning two games at Bixby.

The Lady Sandites hammered the Wildcats 11-0 on Wednesday with their fifth-best offensive showing of the season and their best defensive performance. Madelyn Blair, Kimi Presnell, and Elizabeth Luttrell each hit home runs and Makenna Skaggs drilled two triples. Sabrina Usher hit one double and Cameron Clemons hit two for a team-high three RBI.

All three of the Sandites’ home runs came back-to-back-to-back in the top of the second. They recorded seven hits and eight runs in the remarkable inning.

Madelyn Blair (6-1, 25-6) got the start on the mound, throwing two strikeouts and two walks in two innings without giving up any hits. Mackenzie Bechtold (2-0) recorded the win with one hit and one walk in three innings. The Lady Cats batted only .063.

On Friday the Sandites took on Cushing (18-8) and needed an international tie breaker to settle things. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second from three hits and an error. Presnell doubled in Luttrell in the third and Usher hit a home run in the fourth to tie it up.

Presnell was placed on second to start the sixth inning but was tagged out at home in a double play and things didn’t look good for the Sandites. However, Skaggs hit a single and Usher and Jacie Taber were walked to load the bases.

Felicity Horn hit a 3BI triple for the 5-2 lead, and that was all they would need. The Tigers scored one run on two singles, but the Sandites had a double-play of their own to secure the victory.

Aliyah Taff (3-2, 3-4) went the distance on the mound, tossing eight hits, no walks, and one strikeout.

Blair tossed a four-hit, four-strikeout, four-walk victory over Fort Gibson (15-6) Saturday as the Lady Sandites won their seventh shutout of the season, 3-0.

Presnell scored the opening run on a sacrifice fly from Taber in the bottom of the first, then brought in Luttrell with a home run in the fifth.

Sand Springs Softball will return to action Monday afternoon at home with a 3:30 p.m. district double-header against Putnam City North (4-15, 0-2).
