CPHS Football: Bartlesville stuns Sand Springs 54-34

Daren Hawkins snapped a 33-game streak of scoreless games for the Sandite Defense, scoring on an 83-yard pick six.
A 7-14-163-1 passing performance from Ben Winters, a 35-217 rushing performance from Laken Clowdus, and 141 penalty yards were too much for the Sandites to overcome, and the previously winless Bruins stunned the Charles Page High School football team Friday night at Custer Stadium.
The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Sandites (2-4, 1-2) fell 54-34 to No. 13 Bartlesville (1-5, 1-2) on the Bruins’ Homecoming after an insurmountable 21-0 second quarter shutout.
Sand Springs got off to a hot start and a 14-13 first quarter lead, but was left in the dust in the second quarter. Halftime adjustments resulted in a second-half tie and the home team secured its biggest win over the Sandites since 2010 with its highest-scoring game ever in the series.
Ty Pennington connected with Campbell on a 73-yard touchdown on the very first play from scrimmage. Zach Heinen kicked the PAT, and the home team found themselves down 7-0 only 22 seconds into the game.
The Bruins quickly responded with an 8-play 64-yard march, capped by a five-yard touchdown run from Laken Clowdus. Dylan McCoy kicked the PAT to tie things up with 8:14 in the quarter.
Bartlesville forced a quick three-and-out and marched down to the Sandite 17, but Daren Hawkins picked off Ben Winters’s pass for an 83-yard touchdown, ending a 33-game scoreless dry spell for the Sandite defense.
Winters made up for the error with a 53-yard strike to Caden Davis, but McCoy missed the extra point and the Sandites held their lead, 14-13.
The second quarter was all Bartlesville as they forced another three-and-out and took advantage of a major Sandite Special Teams mistake. A bad hike traveled past Heinen, who recovered it at his own 18 yard line, setting up the Bruins for a five-play drive and one-yard run from Seth Long for the 20-14 lead.
Sand Springs made it to the Bartlesville 30 but turned the ball over on downs, and the Bruins responded with a five-play 70-yard march and 44-yard touchdown pass from Winters to Davis. The defense came up strong again as Taton Hopkins made the first ever interception against Pennington and returned it 40 yards. Six plays later, on a fourth-and-seven, Winters found Long from 26 yards out and McCoy gave his team the 34-14 lead shortly before the half.
The Sandites forced a punt to start the second half and put together a methodical 15-play 78-yard march, ending in Pennington’s first career rushing touchdown, from six yard out. Bartlesville responded with an 8-play 83-yard drive and 2-yard touchdown run from Clowdus. McCoy missed the PAT and ended the night 4-of-6 after being replaced by Taton Hopkins.
Rocky Shuman came up big for the Bruins to stop a fourth-down run from Trey Wilkerson at the end of the third. The Bruins only needed three plays to drive 42-yards, scoring on a 37-yard run by Clowdus. Hopkins kicked the PAT for the 47-21 lead ten seconds into the fourth.
Sand Springs had its quickest drive of the night, going 72 yards in five plays, scoring on a 1-yard run from Jacob Snodgrass out of the wildcat formation.
Two punts later and Bartlesville scored their final touchdown of the night on an 8-yard run from Clowdus. Sand Springs finished the night with a 4-yard pass from Pennington to Snodgrass, and a two-point pass attempt fell incomplete.
Pennington ended the night 15-38-296-1 with career-high yardage, but a career-low completion percentage, his first career interception, and his first career rushing touchdown. Campbell was 6-139 receiving and Snodgrass was 7-115. The two were well over 200 all-purpose yards as Campbell had 5 kick returns for 92 yards and Snodgrass had 4 for 98.
The Sandites will look to get back in the win column with a Thursday night Fall Break home game against No. 11 Ponca City (3-3, 1-2). Bartlesville will host No. 1 Bixby (6-0, 3-0) Thursday.
