CPHS Football Preview: Sand Springs looking for payback at Bartlesville Homecoming

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-3, 1-1) will play a crucial district toss-up game Friday at No. 13 Bartlesville (0-5, 0-2). The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Lyon Field. Bruin Homecoming festivities will be held at halftime.

The 7,200-seat Custer Stadium was built in 1952 and is located at 1700 Hillcrest Drive, Bartlesville, OK 74003 on the high school campus. Parking is located on the east side of Shawnee Avenue on the visitors’ side of the stadium. General Admission tickets are $7.00 or $5.00 for students.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-70 (.481) under thirteenth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Bartlesville went 4-6 last season under first-year Head Coach Lee Blankenship, who turned over the program to former Defensive Coordinator Jason Sport shortly after the season concluded. Their last winning record and playoff appearance came in 2015. They have never won a State title.

Bartlesville has had three high schools with four names in the town’s history. Sand Springs and Central High went 3-3 before Central was split into College High and Sooner High. Sooner High School led the Sandites 6-2 before it was consolidated with College High. College High led the Sandites 10-4 before being renamed Bartlesville High School in 1982. Since Bartlesville schools were reunified they lead the series 20-15.

The Bruins rallied from a 20-7 deficit to spoil the Sandites’ homecoming last season. Sand Springs took a 13-0 lead with a 37-yard run from Joel Mackey and a 38-yard pass from Caden Pennington to Daren Hawkins. Pennington hit Hawkins again from 34-yards to make it 20-7 and were up 20-13 at the half.

Bartlesville took a 23-20 lead, Pennington hit Braden Foster from 19 yards out with 3:29 to play, then Ben Winters ran in a one-yarder for the win. Winters, who is a senior this year, was 16-22-221-0 in the game.

This Season

Sand Springs has wins of 35-0 against Putnam City (1-4) and 21-19 against Shawnee (1-4). Their losses are all to undefeated teams. 41-7 to Mansfield Summit (5-0), 50-20 to Greenwood (5-0), and 54-6 to Muskogee (5-0). The Sandites own the No. 11 offense, No. 13 defense, and No. 12 margin of victory.

The Sandites average 3 points in the first period, 6 in the second and third periods, and 4 points in the fourth. The offense averages 5.3 yards per pass attempt, 9.9 yards per completion, 3.4 yards per carry, and 4.3 yards per play. They convert on 36% of third down attempts and 57% of fourth downs. They score on 24% of possessions and 55% of red zone penetrations, and are 0-for-2 on two-point plays.

The Sandite Defense has held its foes to 7.0 yards per pass, 12.2 yards per completion, 4.3 yards per carry, and 5.6 yards per play. They have prevented scores on 58% of their opponents’ possessions and 25% of red zone penetrations. They stop 53% of third downs attempts and 67% of fourth downs. Their opponents are 1-of-3 on two-point conversions.

It has been 33 games since the Sandite defense scored a touchdown. After five games they already have four interceptions, against only two in all of last season. They are currently on track to match last season’s fumble recoveries, and are still looking for their first blocked kick.

Sand Springs has struggled with penalties on all three sides of the ball. The offense is averaging 4 penalties for 32 yards, defense is 4-54, and special teams are 2-27 for over 100 yards per game. The defense has given up thirteen first-downs this season on penalties.

The Sandites have averaged a solid 17.3 yards per kick return but have only one punt return this season for 8 yards. They have struggled in kick coverage, giving up 24.8 yards per kick return and 28.3 yards per punt return.

Bartlesville is still looking for its first win this season, but has had a few solid outings. They fell 40-28 to Claremore (2-3), 49-24 to Del City (4-1), 28-0 to Booker T. Washington (2-3), and went to overtime in a 20-17 loss to Collinsville (4-1),. Last week they went down in a 55-40 shootout with Sapulpa (4-1). They own the No. 8 offense, No. 14 defense, and No. 13 margin of victory.

Oklahoma High School Football Rankings: Class 6A-II Week Six

1. Bixby (5-0, 2-0, Last week No. 1).

   • The Spartans won their 17th-straight game and second shut out of the season 31-0 against Booker T. Washington. Mason Williams was 15-17-236-1 passing with a TD throw to Trevon Holt, who was 6-137 receiving. Braylin Presley led the ground 11-88 for 2 TDs. Reis Vernon continued his perfect season kicking PATs (35/35) and kicked a 37-yard field goal.

   • Bixby will host Ponca City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Wildcats 57-20 last year.

2. Stillwater (5-0, 2-0 Last week No. 2).

   • Gunnar Gundy was 25-39-307 passing for 4 TDs, Steven Brown was 11-137 receiving, and Qwontrel Walker was 22-240 rushing in a 49-14 rout of Midwest City.

   • The Pioneers will host Choctaw Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Yellowjackets 42-22 last season.

3. Muskogee (5-0, 2-0, Last week No. 4).

   • Muskogee dominated Sand Springs with a 40-0 first half shutout and took a 47-0 lead before letting the Sandites on the board. Ty Williams was 12-17-110-0 for 1 TD by air, and was 7-62 for another TD on the ground. Jimmie Coleman was 18-133 rushing for 3 TDs. The defense came away with three fumble recoveries and held the Sandites to their lowest offensive output of the year in both points and yards.

   • The Roughers will host Sapulpa Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 49-48 in overtime to the Chieftains last season.

4. Del City (4-1, 2-0, Last week No. 3).

   • Del City had little difficulty in a 50-6 rout of Putnam West, taking a 16-0 halftime lead and 23-0 advantage before letting the Patriots on the board. LaJuan Brown scored 3 TD runs, Jahkobie Smith scored on a 75-yard punt return, Cyrus Adams recovered a fumble, and Keshon Meadows threw for a score and ran for a score.

   • The Eagles will host Deer Creek Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Antlers 35-6 last year.

5. Booker T. Washington (2-3, 1-1, Last week No. 5).

   • The Hornets suffered their second shutout of the season, 31-0 against Bixby. They never got the offense rolling, but the defense held the Spartans to their lowest-scoring output of the year.

   • Washington will travel to Shawnee Friday at 7:30 p.m. They beat the Wolves 54-0 last year.

6. Midwest City (1-4, 1-1, Last week No. 6).

   • The Bombers fell 49-14 to Stillwater. Deangelo Irvin threw TD passes of 43 yards to Brian Wilson and 73 yards to Makale Smith. They will travel to Putnam City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Pirates 36-0 last year.

7. Sapulpa (4-1, 1-1, Last week No. 8).

   • The Chieftains struggled against a winless Bartlesville squad, trailing by as much as 34-21 before rallying to a 55-40 win. Sapulpa will travel to Muskogee Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Roughers 49-48 in overtime last season.

8. Choctaw (3-2, 1-1), Last week No. 9).

   • The Yellowjackets blew out Putnam City 58-7. Gabe Johnson returned the opening kick for a score and Thad Williams threw four TD passes for a 51-0 halftime lead.

   • Choctaw will travel to Stillwater Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 42-22 to the Pioneers last season.

9. Edmond Deer Creek (3-2, 1-1), Last week No. 10).

   • The Antlers stunned Lawton 17-14 with a 55-yard field goal from Logan Ward to send the game to overtime, and a 22-yard field goal to secure the upset. Brett Pense was 6-14-59-1 passing and Tyler Travis bore the brunt of the offense with a 22-178 ground game.

   • Deer Creek will travel to Del City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 35-6 to the Eagles last year.

10. Lawton (3-2, 0-2, Last week No. 7).

    • The Wolverines were upset 17-14 in overtime by Deer Creek. They found all of their offense on the ground, led by Christian Houston with 14 carries for 89 yards. Devin Simpson and Eric Wiley scored the team’s two touchdowns.

    • Lawton will host Putnam West Thursday at 7:00 p.m. They doubled the Patriots 42-21 last year.

11. Ponca City (3-2, 1-1, Last week No. 12).

    • Kyter Welch was 1-8-17-0 passing and 13-53 rushing for a touchdwn in a 21-7 win over Shawnee. Cameron Jackson was 19-107 rushing, and Eli Wohl was 6-34 for 2 TDs.

    • The Wildcats will travel to Bixby Friday at 7:00 p.m. They lost 57-20 last year.

12. Sand Springs (2-3, 1-1, Last week No. 11).

    • The Sandites were dominated 54-6 by Muskogee for their worst loss since 2013. The Roughers took a 47-0 lead before sending in the second string. Ty Pennington was 13-23-107-0 for the lone TD.

    • Sand Springs will travel to Bartlesville Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 29-27 to the Bruins last season.

13. Bartlesville (0-5, 0-2, Last week No. 14).

    • The Bruins are still looking for their first win, but got a moral victory in a 55-40 loss to Sapulpa, leading by as much as 34-21 before the Chieftains rallied. Ben Winters was 19-32-311 passing for two touchdowns. Laken Clowdus ran for 251 yards and three scores.

    • Bartlesville will host Sand Springs Friday at 7:00 p.m. They won 29-27 last year.

14. Shawnee (1-4, 0-2, Last week No. 13).

    • Shawnee was held to a 22-99 rushing performance against 13 penalties for 124 yards in a 21-7 loss to Ponca City. Karson Conaway was 13-24-188-1 passing with one TD and Cyn’Cere Spencer was 4-110 receiving.

    • The Wolves will host Booker T. Washington Friday at 7:30 p.m. for Homecoming. They fell 54-0 to the Hornets last year.

15. Putnam City (1-4, 1-1, Last week No. 15).

    • The Pirates fell 58-7 to Choctaw and will host Midwest City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 36-0 to the Bombers last year.

    • The Patriots lost their eleventh-straight game, 50-6 to Del City. They will travel to Lawton Friday at 7:00 p.m. They lost 42-21 to the Wolverines last year.

CPHS Football: Sand Springs dominated 54-6 by No. 4 Muskogee, Sisco scores lone Sandite TD

Muskogee, OK - The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-3, 1-1) fell 54-6 to No. 4 Muskogee (5-0, 2-0) Friday night at the Indian Bowl after a 50-minute rain delay. It was Sand Springs’s biggest loss since 2013, Muskogee’s biggest win in the history of the series, and the most points the Roughers have scored against the Sandites since 2006.

The Roughers won the first half 40-0 and made it 47-0 before sending in the second string and letting the Sandites on the board.

Muskogee utterly shut down the Sandite offense, holding their visitors to their lowest offensive output of the season in points, first downs, rushing yards, and total yards. They were also the only team this season not to throw the Sandites a pick.

The Roughers scored on all six first half possessions, and their first drive of the second half. Junior quarterback Ty Williams was 12-17-110-0 passing and 7-62 rushing in three quarters of action. He scored the first touchdown of the game on an 18-yard keeper and threw a 19-yard TD pass to Jordan Bradley with ten seconds left in the half.

Senior running back Jimmie Coleman led the ground game with 18 carries for 133 yards and ran in TDs from 5, 6, and 46 yards. The holder fumbled the point-after kick attempt following Coleman’s first score, and the Roughers ended the first quarter with a 13-0 lead. Isaiah Givens had a productive second quarter, scoring on runs of 7 and 3 yards.

The Sandites punted seven times and didn’t see their opponents’ side of the field till their fifth possession. Jareed Hagerman came up with fumble midway through the second period, setting up a scoring drive for the 33-0 lead.

Sand Springs’s most successful first-half drive featured two first downs and a six-play march to the Muskogee 42 before Kaleb Biglow came up with a 14-yard sack. Coleman made a 38-yard punt return to the Sandite 35-yard line, setting up a 6-play 35-yard march for the final score of the half.

The Roughers forced a quick three-and-out to start the third quarter, then scored in only four plays thanks to Coleman’s 46-yard run. Another Sandite three-and-out and the home team sent in the backups with 8:14 left in the quarter.

Muskogee punted for the first time, Sand Springs punted for the seventh time, then Muskogee punted once again. This time, however, Josh Campbell recovered a Sandite fumble on the punt return, giving the Roughers a fresh set of downs. They marched as far as the Sand Springs 22 yard-line before Lane Webster made a nine-yard sack on fourth down.

The Sandites’ next drive hit pay dirt with an 8-play 51-yard march, a fourth-down conversion, and a 21-yard touchdown pass from Ty Pennington to Jamon Sisco. The PAT was no good, however, as Kaunor Ashley recovered a fumbled hike for the Roughers.

The home team responded with a 7-play 53-yard drive, a fourth-down conversion, and a 24-yard touchdown run by Jaiden Alexander. Jacob Scheihing kicked the PAT for the final point of the game, and was 6-of-7 on the night.

Sand Springs was working on a successful drive, picking up three first downs to position themselves at the Rougher 23-yard line when time ran out.

Pennington was 13-23-107-0 for the Sandites. A sophomore and first-year starter, he holds an 8-0 TD-Interception ratio this season, scoring in all five games. Snodgrass was his leading receiver with 4 catches for 34 yards, and was the leading kick returner with 57 yards on 3 returns. Blake Jones led the ground game for the Sandites with 16 carries for 80 yards.

Senior defensive captain Jerret Haley had a big night with 17 tackles, while Webster got hot late in the game with four tackles for loss totaling 20 yards, and the team’s lone sack.

Sand Springs will look to get back to .500 when they travel to No. 14 Bartlesville (0-5, 0-2) Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Roughers will host No. 8 Sapulpa (4-1, 1-1).

CPHS Football Halftime Report: No. 4 Muskogee dominant in 40-0 shutout of Sand Springs

Muskogee, OK - The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-2, 1-0) is off to a rough start against No. 4 Muskogee (4-0, 1-0), trailing 40-0 at the half following a 50-minute rain delay at the Indian Bowl.

The Roughers utterly shut down the Sandite offense, holding their visitors to 1 yard on 10 runs and a 7-13-55-0 passing performance from sophomore quarterback Ty Pennington.

Muskogee has been led by junior QB Ty Williams, who is 11-15-104-0 with one touchdown by air and 7-62 with another score on the ground. Senior running back Jimmie Coleman is 16-73 on the ground with two touchdowns, and Isaiah Givens is 5-28 with two more scores. Jordan Bradley caught only one pass in the half, and scored from 19 yards out.

Sand Springs only amassed three first downs and committed 6 penalties for 56 yards. They punted four times and turned over a fumble. They were at negative 14 rushing yards till the last play of the half.

Muskogee scored touchdowns on all six first-half possessions, and Jacob Scheihing connected on 4 out of 5 PAT kicks. He missed one, and his setter fumbled one.

CPHS Football Preview: No. 11 Sandites travel to No. 4 Muskogee Friday

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-2, 1-0) will have a tough test Friday when they travel to undefeated No. 4 Muskogee (4-0, 1-0). The Sandites and Roughers will kick off at 7:00 p.m. in the Indian Bowl.

The Indian Bowl is located at 402 North S Street, Muskogee, OK 74403 on the campus of Alice Robertson Junior High. The visitors’ side is located on North Utah Street. The 6,500-seat stadium was built in 1939 for $100,000. General admission tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-69 (.485) under thirteenth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Muskogee went 6-5 last season, falling 48-13 to Stillwater in the first round. They are 30-26 (.535) under sixth-year Head Coach Rafe Watkins. The Roughers have three State titles (1986, 1950, 1948).

Muskogee won the first twenty meetings between the two schools, then Sand Springs went on a six-year win streak from 2011-2016. The Roughers won the past two meetings and lead the series 22-6 with an average score of 29-17. Muskogee has shut out the Sandites three times, and has been shut out once.

Sand Springs led last year’s game 27-24 to start the fourth quarter, but the Roughers surged ahead with a 21-0 fourth quarter shutout. Joel Mackey was 15-104 rushing for one score and Trey Wilkerson was 7-34 for another. Caden Pennington was 5-14-80-0 passing with a 60-yard TD pass to Daren Hawkins, and was 12-55 rushing for another score.

This Season

Sand Springs fell 41-7 to Mansfield Summit (5-0) and 50-20 to Greenwood (4-0) but rolled 35-0 against Putnam City (1-3) and won 21-19 against Shawnee (1-3). The Sandites own the No. 9 offense, No. 11 defense, and No. 9 margin of victory in Class 6A-II.

The Sandites average four points in the first period, seven points in the second and third periods, and three points in the fourth. The offense averages 5.3 yards per pass attempt, 10.4 yards per completion, 3.7 yards per carry, and 4.4 yards per play. They convert on 36% of third down plays and are 55% on fourth down. They score on 28% of possessions and 55% of red zone penetrations, and are 0-1 on two-point plays.

The Sandite Defense has held its foes to 7.4 yards per pass, 12.6 yards per completion, 3.6 yards per carry, and 5.5 yards per play. They have prevented scores on 66% of their foes’ possessions, and stopped 66% of third down attempts, 75% of fourth down attempts and 36% of red zone penetrations. 6’1” sophomore Keaton Campbell was 3-28 receiving, 1-8 on punt return, and 2-50 on kick returns Friday against Shawnee.

6’2” sophomore Ty Pennington looks for an open receiver while under pressure from Justin Simpson. Pennington finished the night 13-27-143-0 with one touchdown against Shawnee. He has 7 touchdowns and 0 interceptions this season.

Demetress Beavers was 18-71 rushing for the Wolves.

Flags fly as Bryson Chase shoots for a tackle on Demetress Beavers. The 5’11” junior defensive back accounted for three pass break-ups against Shawnee.

Ty Pennington hands the ball off to 5’10” sophomore Blake Jones. Jones was 1-22 receiving and 21-86 rushing against the Wolves.

6’2” senior Jacob Snodgrass was 6-48 as the Sandites’ leading receiver, and was 5-29 from the wildcat with two rushing touchdowns against Shawnee.

13th-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard improved to 65-69 overall, 42-41 in district action, and 34-28 at home with the 21-19 win over Shawnee. Kinard battled pancreatic cancer last year but announced he was cancer-free prior to the 2019 season.

Junior kicker Zach Heinen is was 3/3 on PATs against Shawnee and is 11/11 in his debut season. He averaged 30 yards per punt and 46 yards per kick.
