The Charles Page High School boys’ track and field team took third place at the 6A Regional meet in Ponca City Saturday, crowning two Champions with eleven top-six finishes. Eight total Sandites punched their tickets to the State Championship this coming weekend in Moore.

Oral Roberts University-signed senior Mitchell Mefford won the Discus Throw with a personal-record 159 feet and one inch. He also had a PR in Shot Put at 41’10.50 for seventh place. The State Discus competition will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Air Force Academy-signee Aden Baughman won the 800-meter run for the third-straight year in 1:58.63 and was runner-up in the 400 with a PR time of 50.13 seconds. He settled for fifth in the 800 at last year’s State meet after winning gold the prior season. This is his first time qualifying in the 400. The 400 prelims will be Friday at 2:15 with the finals held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The 800 race will be Saturday at 12:20 p.m.

Baughman also qualified in the 4x400 relay alongside Jaelyn Jackson, Joseph Mattison, and Nelson Yazzie. They placed second in 3:31.54, the school’s best time since at least 2004. The 1600 relay will be the final event at State, Saturday at 3:10 p.m.

Baughman, Jackson, Yazzie, and Savannah College of Art and Design-signee Jake Smith qualified in the 4x800 relay with a third place finish in 8:18.51, their best time of the season. Last year they placed sixth at State after winning Regionals. The 3200 relay will be held Friday at 12:40 p.m.

Joel Mackey came in Runner-Up twice in the 100-meter dash. He finished the prelims in 11.11 seconds and the finals in a season-best 10.82. He also placed third in the 200-meter finals with a season-best 21.90. Last season he placed ninth at State in the 100 and tenth in the 200. He will run the 100 prelims Friday at 1:55 p.m. and the 200 at 3:25 p.m. The 100 finals will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m., followed by the 200 at 2:20 p.m.

Mackenzie Rader placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdle prelims, then improved to fourth in the finals with a career-best time of 17.07 seconds to qualify for the State meet. The State prelims will be held Friday at 1:35 p.m., with the finals Saturday at 12:40 p.m.

Davina Green ran a PR 29.72 in the 200, Chezney Kelley ran a PR 6:37.26 in the 1600, and Rader tied her PR High Jump at 4’10.00” for fifth place. Elizabeth Watts had her best performance in a year in the 100 hurdles, finishing sixth in the prelims in 17.91.

Alex Newport ran a PR 45.88 in the 300 hurdles, Morgan Lockhart ran a PR 24.34 in the 200 dash, and Noah Hanlon ran a PR 11:38.07 in the 3200. All three 1600 runners set PRs. Smith finished in 4:39.94, Danny Murray finished in 4:52.23, and Caleb James finished in 5:19.86. Sam Keiper set a PR distance of 98’06.50” in discus and 29’01.50” in Shot Put.

The boys voided the High Jump, Pole Vault, and 4x200 relay, and placed fifth in the 4x100. The Lady Sandites voided the 800 run, Pole Vault, 4x100, and 4x200. They placed fifth in the 4x400 and sixth in the 4x800 with their fastest time of the year, and placed eighth out of eight teams overall at Regionals.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites whip Wildcats twice in district action

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (16-3, 5-1) picked up a pair of district wins against Ponca City (7-15, 1-5) in a home-and-home series Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday they needed an extra inning to edge out a 2-1 victory over Ponca. The Wildcats scored their only run in the bottom of the second thanks to an error at second and an RBI triple.

Cal Watkins quickly tied the game in the top of the third, bringing in Seth Villines on a single. Cale Savage hit a double in the eighth to score Kiefer Massey for the win. Sand Springs out hit the Wildcats four to one and both teams picked up six walks each. The Sandites stranded six runners and Ponca left seven on base.

Undefeated senior Ben Banker (5-0, 6-0) got the start on the mound, walking three and giving up one hit in three and one third innings. John Miller (2-0, 7-1) took over midway through the fourth and was credited with the win after walking three and striking out seven.

Tuesday’s game was a totally different story as the Sandites scored four in the first inning and led 7-0 before the Wildcats tried to rally with four runs in the final two innings.

Tyler Ash, Watkins, and Savage hit singles in the first inning, with Savage scoring Ash. Watkins scored on a fielder’s choice and Ethan Sartin hit a double to bring in Savage and Jacob Snodgrass. Watkins and Savage scored on a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth, and Malachi Burks stole home.

The Wildcats finally got on the board with an error in the sixth. Austin Haney hit a solo homer in the seventh and Ponca loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks. Eli Wohl scored two on a double and the Wildcats reloaded with another walk, but a Watkins strikeout secured the win.

Sebastian Cassity (3-1) got the start and win on the mound, throwing four hits, three strikeouts, and two walks in six innings. Watkins (1-0) closed out the night and was credited with his second save of the season, throwing a hit, a strikeout, and two walks.

No. 1 Sandite Wrestling steamrolls undefeated No. 8 Ponca City 51-12

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The No. 1 ranked Charles Page High School varsity wrestling team (2-0) hosted the No. 8 Ponca City Wildcats (3-1) in their home debut Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, but from the score you wouldn't think it was a top-ten matchup between undefeated teams.

While the visitors had rolled to dominating performances over their first three opponents, they were in a whole different league with the Sandites. Sand Springs is currently ranked seventeenth in the nation by Flowrestling.com and boasts the largest squad of returning State Qualifiers and Placers in Oklahoma 6A. And some of the Sandite starters didn't even wrestle.

The Sandites won eleven of fourteen matches, forfeited one, and lost only two, despite missing a pair of starters. State-placers Jack Karstetter and Zane Basma both sat out with minor injuries.

Sand Springs is currently tied with Choctaw (1-0) for first place in the OSSAA rankings, though the Sandites received more first-place votes than the defending State Champions. They will return to action Thursday when they host No. 10 Stillwater (2-1).

The dual started off at 106 pounds and if you blinked you could have missed it. Sophomore  Riley Weir (11-4) pinned Martezz Carnes in a mere 15 seconds. Senior Tanner Ward (10-4) wasn't far behind with a 48 second pin of Jacob Swenson.

Senior Michael Ritchey (10-5) had a tough opponent at 120 in Karson Bellmard and only held a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Sandite scored another takedown in the second period and rode the Wildcat throughout, then did the same in the third for a 6-0 decision.

State Qualifier Spencer Schickram took a 2-0 lead over junior Blake Sargent (11-4) at 126 midway through the first, but couldn't hold the Sandite for long. Less than thirty second later Sargent reversed and took a 3-2 lead into the second period. Sargent took the down position to start and escaped in the first thirty seconds, but the Wildcat tied it up soon after. Sargent was on the verge of a reversal but Schickram caught him off balance and nearly pinned him before the Sandite powered his way out of bounds with his shoulder inches away from the mat the whole time. Schickram took a 9-5 lead into the third, then made it 10-5 with an early escape. Sargent scored a takedown as time came close to expiring but couldn't get the pin and Ponca found a 10-7 decision for their first points of the night.

Leading 15-3 the Sandites sent in their big dog in nationally ranked No. 1 Oklahoma State-signed senior Daton Fix (14-0) against Dylan Schickram. The Wildcat put up major effort and only trailed 8-3 after the first period, but Fix worked him over for a 2:18 pin.

Cody Mathis cut weight to fill in for Jack Karstetter at 138 and gave one of the most intense performances of the evening. He scored an early takedown in the first period over Dawson Hunt. The Wildcat reversed, then Mathis reversed right back and took a 5-4 lead into the second. An escape point to start and a quick takedown made it 8-4, but the slippery Wildcat reversed once again and held the Sandite till the buzzer. Mathis started the third period on top and was reversed for a tie that lasted all the way through the sudden victory round. In the first tie breaker round Mathis started on bottom and took an 11-8 lead with an escape and a takedown.
