CPHS Softball: Sandites survive Owasso on the road to finish 2nd in District play

The Owasso varsity softball team staged a major comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored three runs to make it 8-6 with two runners on base against the Charles Page High School Sandites, but Aliyah Taff pitched her 12th strikeout of the game to secure a huge district win Tuesday evening on the road.

Sand Springs (23-4, 10-2) clinched a second-place finish in District 6A-3 and will get to host a Regional Tournament after beating the Rams (21-6, 8-4), who finished third.

Madison Lee hit a leadoff single for the visitors, who loaded the bases with hits from JoLee McNally and Raegan Rector. Jaden Jordan brought them all home on a double, then scored on a ground out from Avery Tanner for the 4-0 lead .

The third inning saw a single from Drew Hawkins and a double from Nataley Crawford. Olivia Alexander hit a two-run single, then courtesy runner Morgan Rector scored on a triple from Lee to make it 7-0. Madi Norton drew a walk in the bottom of the inning and Emmalie Green reached on error. Lily Shaw got the Rams on the board with an RBI single, then Green and Shaw scored on a triple from Brookley Foster.

Jordan scored the Sandites’ final run on an RBI single from Tanner in the top of the fourth, and the visitors led 8-3 going into the bottom of the final inning. Norton and Foster walked, and Sarah Campbell reached on an error to load the bases. Norton scored on an error and Halle Hance hit a two-run double. Avery Tallman drew a walk, but Alexander made the play at first on a dropped third strike to end the game.

Taff (16-4, 33-18) won her fifth straight game, throwing four hits, 12 strikeouts, and five walks. Tallman got the loss with nine hits and one walk in 2.2 innings, and was relieved by Lauren St. John who threw four hits, two strikeouts, and no walks in 4.1 innings.

Sandite Softball has now won five games in a row, and 11 of their last 12. They will host Oologah-Talala (21-3) Thursday at 5:00 p.m. for their last game of the regular season. Owasso has one game left Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Durant (17-11). They will receive their Regional assignments Monday and the tournaments are scheduled to be played next Thursday.
