CPHS Basketball: Shorthanded Sandites beat Sapulpa 57-48, Minney scores 18

Ethan Oakley made his first career start Tuesday and recorded 6 points with 7 rebounds.

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (14-3, 6-3) came into Tuesday night’s conference road game minus two starters, but that didn’t stop them from rolling to a 57-48 win against Highway 97 rival Sapulpa (8-10, 3-6), snapping a four-game win streak for the Chieftains.

Jaeden Hurd had ACL surgery last week and is out for the season. Daren Hawkins went down on Friday and is expected to have season-ending surgery sometime this week. The two juniors split starting duty and average a combined 14 points and 8 rebounds. 6’3” sophomore Ethan Oakley stepped up Tuesday and contributed well with 6 points and 7 rebounds in his first career start.

The triple-headed scoring threat of Davon Richardson, Marlo Fox, and Josh Minney all posted double digits, led by Minney with 18 for his third team-high of the year. Richardson had his fifth double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Fox added 12 points and 6 boards.

Te’Zohn Taft scored the first bucket of the game from three-point range, then Fox hit back-to-back twos for the lead. Zac Altom and Hunter Hoggatt added two more goals and the Chieftains led for the remainder of the quarter.

Sand Springs came storming back with eight-straight points to start the second, but Taft tied it back up at 18-18. Sapulpa finished the half strong with a traditional three from Brandon Niyah for a 23-22 locker room advantage.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than a goal, and Oakley took the final lead of the game with a free throw at 38-37. Oakley added another bucket to start the fourth quarter, kicking off a 10-2 run that Sapulpa never recovered from.

The Chieftains had two players in double-digits; Taft with 14 points and Niyah with 10.

Sand Springs will return to action with a huge conference road game against No. 7 Union (12-5, 5-3) Friday at 8:00 p.m. They previously beat the Redskins 75-74 at home in December. The Chieftains will travel to Bixby (6-9, 2-6) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They edged out the Spartans 75-73 at home in December.
