CPHS Wrestling: Sandites sitting in 8th place after day one at Cushing

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team is sitting in eighth place out of 41 teams at the Cushing Tiger Invitational after the first day of competition. Five wrestlers are still in contention for a title, while four more are alive in consolation.

Mitchell Smith (2-0) got called up from the junior varsity team and impressed with a pair of first-period falls at 113. He’ll have a tough quarterfinal match Saturday against Cushing State Runner-Up Brandon Anderson.

Seth Jones (17-4, 61-33) pinned his first two opponents at 126 pounds, including teammate Ethan Norton. In the quarterfinals he will wrestle Salina freshman Gavin Montgomery, who is 17-1 in his debut season. Norton (2-5, 2-10) is still alive on the back end and will take on State Qualifier Grant Edwards out of Ft. Gibson.

Carter Goodman (2-0) made his varsity debut at 132 and went 2-0 with a pin and a decision. He will wrestle defending Wagoner State Champion Braden Drake Saturday morning.

Chris Kirby (13-6, 71-30) went 2-0 with two falls at 160. On Saturday he will wrestle Blackwell sophomore Christian Mora, who is 16-1 on the season.

Josh Fincannon (15-5, 54-39) went 2-0 with two falls at 220. On Saturday he will wrestle Sperry junior Kyron Woodall.

Shane Wolf (6-3) and Brendon Wiseley (15-5, 67-25) are working their way up opposite sides of the 106 consolation bracket, each with 3-1 records. Wolf has recorded one pin and two close decisions, while Wiseley has two pins and a 10-0 major decision.

Preston Medlin (7-8, 20-30) won his first match by pin before falling to Sperry State Qualifier Cooper Park. In consolation he pinned Blanchard State Qualifier Braxton North.

Sango Whitehorn (6-10, 8-14) won his first match 11-2 before falling to Bristow State Qualifier Luke Miller. In consolation he won a 6-5 decision before getting eliminated. Brooks Dudley (11-10, 21-18) went 1-2 at 195 with one fall. Both of his losses came to State Qualifiers.

Blake Jones (13-6, 39-20) went 1-1 at 138 with a pin, Chase White (5-9, 5-11) was 1-2 at 152 with a pin, and Robbie Parrish (6-11, 8-26) was 1-2 at 285 with a pin. The Sandites voided 120.
