The Programs
Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 64-69 (.481) under thirteenth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.
Shawnee went 2-8 last year in their first season at the 6A-II level. They went 6-4 in 5A in 2017 and last made the playoffs in 2016. Sixteenth-year Head Coach Bill Brown is 93-74 (.556) at Shawnee. They own two gold balls from 1973 and 2003.
The two teams have only met seven times and Sand Springs leads the series 5-2. They met annually from 1992-1997 during the first six years of Class 6A. The Wolves won the first meeting, but Sand Springs ran the series until their reunion last year.
10/30/1992: Shawnee 21-14 (A)
10/29/1993: Sand Springs 14-0 (H)
11/4/1994: Sand Springs 18-6 (A)
11/3/1995: Sand Springs 20-7 (H)
9/27/1996: Sand Springs 36-0 (A)
9/26/1997: Sand Springs 35-0 (H)
9/21/2018: Shawnee 23-20 (A, OT)
Last year the Sandites were upset 23-20 in a rainy chilly overtime battle. Senior quarterback Caden Pennington was held to a 5-11-79-1 passing performance due to the rain, but was 18-78 with two touchdowns on the ground. Joel Mackey bore the brunt of the offense with 30 carries for 251 yards and a score.
The weather contributed to a sloppy game that saw three fumbles with one lost, two failed PATs, a red zone turnover on downs, and a red zone interception. On fourth-and-goal from the six, in overtime, Pennington had a wide open running lane but slipped in the wet grass. The Sandite defense forced an easy three-and-out but Shawnee kicked a field goal to win the game.
This Season
Both teams are 1-2 after non-district action. Sand Springs fell 41-7 to Mansfield Summit (4-0), won 35-0 against Putnam City (0-3), then fell 50-20 to Greenwood (3-0). The Sandites own the No. 11 offense, No. 11 defense, and No. 11 margin of victory in Class 6A-II.
Shawnee fell 49-21 to Choctaw (2-1), defeated Guthrie (1-2) 33-23, then fell 40-13 to Carl Albert (3-0). The Wolves own the No. 9 offense, No. 14 defense, and No. 13 margin of victory in the division.
