CPHS Soccer: Sandites sweep Tulsa Memorial, girls remain undefeated
/The Charles Page High School soccer teams hosted Tulsa Memorial High School Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium for a pair of non-district matches. The Lady Sandites (2-0) defeated Memorial (1-2) in overtime penalty kicks and the Sandite boys (1-1) notched their first win of the season over the winless Chargers (0-2).
The girls game was a slow starter as neither team scored till the last fifteen minutes of the match. Carson Hazel scored the first goal of the night for Memorial at 65:04, then Morgan Poletek tied it up at 73:43. Sandite freshman goalie Alison Day averted the loss with a leaping save at 78:40 and regulation ended in a tie.
As a non-district match, the game skipped the overtime period and went straight to penalty kicks. Hazel and Brynlee Slankard made the first two kicks, but Kat Henson went high and missed the goal completely.
Ari Esparza gave Sand Springs the edge, and neither team missed again. Daniela Marrufo, Daisha Hammons, and Hannah Hubler scored for the Chargers while Poletek, Demi Deshazo, and Emma Peak scored for the Sandites.
The boys' team got off to a quick start with a goal from Jack Bratcher at 1:05, but the Chargers tied it up at 4:32 thanks to Alejandro Chavez. Weslee Calhoun put the home team back out front at 33:02 and the Sandites took the edge into the locker room.
Chavez tied it up at 42:40 but this time Luke Jeffus reclaimed the lead with his third goal of the season at 42:55. Bratcher book-ended the evening with a game-clinching goal at 79:15.
The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday, March 13th at 6:00 p.m. against Edison Preparatory School (0-1). The boys' team will compete Friday, March 9th at the Edison Green and White Tournament with a first-round match against Northwest Classen (1-0) at 1:15 p.m. They will play again at 6:30 p.m. if they lose or at 8:15 with a win, against either Edison (1-0) or Ft. Smith Southside (0-3).
