CPHS Wrestling: Mid-Season Statistics, District Tournament preview - presented by Inkwell

Senior Chris Kirby is only 14 career pins shy of Daton Fix’s school record 83.

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (7-5) will host a district quad Tuesday afternoon at Clyde Boyd Middle School. The team with the best record at the event will advance to the Dual State Tournament on February 14th at Enid’s Stride Bank Center.

Sand Springs is looking for its fifth consecutive District title and fourteenth overall. Coverage of the event is sponsored by Inkwell Printing, the official provider of all Sandite spirit wear. Visit them at their south Sand Springs print shop, or at the Ed Dubie Spirit Store during home sporting events. A portion of the sales from all Sandite merchandise goes back to support your local teams.

The quad will kick off with a Highway 97 Rivalry match-up against Sapulpa (2-3). The Sandites beat the Chieftains 69-6 last year and have won four-straight duals dating back to 2013. Sapulpa has one State Qualifier in sophomore Isaiah Smith.

Next up for the Sandites is Muskogee (1-2). The Minutemen beat the Roughers 69-10 last year and have won three-straight meetings dating back to 2013. Muskogee’s lineup includes one returning State Qualifier in heavyweight Devion Williams.

Wrapping up the evening will be Ponca City (2-5). The Sandites won last year’s dual 47-25 and have won eleven consecutive meetings dating back to 2009. The Wildcats have two State Qualifiers: Ethan Kemble and Shayden Trant.

All four teams competed at the Bobby Lyons Invitational this year. Sand Springs placed 8th, Ponca City was 11th, Sapulpa was 13th, and Muskogee was 15th.

No. 1 Broken Arrow won its 13th-straight District title by a combined score of 158-0. No. 2 Mustang won its district by a combined 214-18. No. 3 Choctaw won its district 204-23. No. 4 Edmond North won its district 193-24. No. 5 Stillwater won its district 169-40. No. 6 Edmond Memorial won its district 115-84. No. 12 Union won its district 104-86. District 6 is the only district left to wrestle, and based on current rankings the Sandites will likely earn the No. 7 seed if they advance to Dual State.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites upset defending State Champs, No. 2 Booker T. Washington

University of Kansas-commit Bryce Thompson dunks in the loss to Sand Springs.

Student section chants of “this is our house” filled the air as Sand Springs toppled the defending 6A State Champions from No. 2 ranked Booker T. Washington (7-3, 4-1) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. No. 7 Charles Page High School (11-1, 3-1) led by as many as 16 points in the first half before the Hornets battled back, but ultimately the home team held on for a 66-62 overtime win.

Coverage of the game is brought to you through partnership with Inkwell Printing. Inkwell promises unmatched quality at an unbeatable price. They provide school sports uniforms, fan apparel, promotional merchandise, business cards, and more.

Coming into the season, seventh-year Head Coach Eric Savage had only two teams left in the Frontier Valley Conference that he had not beaten. The Sandites crossed No. 6 Union off that list last month, and now they have taken down No. 2 Booker T. Washington as well. The brutally physical game saw a combined 43 fouls, with four foul outs and one injury.

Five-star University of Kansas-signed senior Bryce Thompson led all scorers with 27 points, followed by University of Oklahoma-commit Trey Phipps with 24, but the Sandites had a more balanced team effort, with three players in double digits.

Marlo Fox scored 22 to lead the Sandites for the tenth time this season, followed by Davon Richardson with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his tenth career double-double. Cason Savage had a season-best ten points.

The home team opened on an 8-0 run with baskets from Fox and Cason Savage, and worked the lead up to an incredible 17-2 before the Hornets battled back to end the quarter 18-9.

RaShannon Phillips hit a pair of free throws to open the second quarter, but Davon Richardson kicked off another eight-point run to regain the 15-point lead.

By halftime the Sandites were holding a 33-21 advantage, and Fox added a layup to it to start the third. The Sandites suffered their first big loss just thirty seconds into the half, when Jaeden Hurd had his legs taken out by a Hornet diving for a loose ball. He left the game with a hurt knee and didn’t return. The Hornets went on an eleven-point run late in the third to cut it to 41-39, but Fox ended the quarter with a traditional three.

Josh Minney hit two free throws to start the final stanza, but soon fouled out and another Hornet run tied it at 46-46 with 5:21 left after a three from Thompson. Fox retaliated with a three and the Sandites remained out front till 2:55 when Daren Hawkins fouled Phillips on a three, and Phillips made it a four-point play to tie it.

The Hornets drained the clock till 38.2 when Savage fouled Thompson. Thompson made one and the Hornets took their first lead of the game. Richardson tied it with a free throw, then Savage sent Phipps to the line with five seconds left. The Hornet missed both shots and the game headed to overtime.

Richardson won the tip off and Fox drained a three. Richardson added two more, then Kameron Parker fouled out and Savage made a traditional three for the 61-53 lead before Thompson put the Hornets on the board. Fox added a free throw, Phipps drilled a three, Richardson added a free throw, then Thompson sank a three to make it 63-62.

With 18.6 left Richardson scored two on an inbound throw, then Hawkins added a free throw to secure the win.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference road game at No. 10 Broken Arrow (12-1, 4-0). The Hornets will travel to the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Missouri on Thursday.

CPHS Basketball: Armstead scores 21 in loss to BTW, presented by Inkwell Printing

The Lady Sandites have made two double-digit comeback wins this season, but they weren’t able to do it against the undefeated No. 1 team in Class 6A. Booker T. Washington (11-0, 5-0) rolled to a dominant 65-39 Frontier Valley Conference win over No. 10 Charles Page High School (9-3, 2-2) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, despite a game-best 21-point effort from Sandite sophomore Journey Armstead.

Coverage of the game is brought to you through partnership with Inkwell Printing. Inkwell is the official provider of Sandite spirit wear, available at both their Prattville store and in the Ed Dubie Spirit Store. Inkwell Printing doesn’t just do shirts, they provide unbeatable quality and designs when it comes to custom apparel, sports uniforms and even banners, promotional products (Mugs, business cards and more), and print design.

The Sandites played aggressive defense throughout the first half and severely limited the Hornets in the first quarter. Armstead scored six points for a 6-5 lead before Wynette Mayberry went on a seven point run to end the period.

Washington rode that momentum to their first double-digit lead at 21-10 after a three from Carrigan Hill and two layups from Aunisty Smith. Armstead scored her team’s first ten points before Bayleigh Cheney put up a three, then Jade Shrum hit a free throw and Hailey Jackson and Sophia Regalado scored in the paint to end the half 34-18.

By the end of the third-quarter the Hornets were up 51-29 and they took a 26-point lead with 4:55 left in the game. Armstead hit a two and Cheney rattled off three from the charity stripe to make it 59-39, then Washington ended on a six-point run against the Sandite third-string.

Armstead led all scorers, closely followed by Mayberry with 20. Smith was the only other player to score in double-digits, putting up 12. Both teams had eight players on the scoreboard, and Jackson had a career-high 18 rebounds.

Washington will return to action next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference home game against Owasso (3-9, 1-2). Sand Springs will travel to Broken Arrow (6-5, 2-1) Friday at 6:30 p.m.

ONEOK donates $150,000 to repair Sand Springs park damaged in flood

Sand Springs, OK- Sand Springs Park Friends, Inc. has received a major donation from ONEOK to assist with the continued flood recovery at Case Community Park. ONEOK announced the gifting of $150,000 to Sand Springs Park Friends, Inc. for work at the park’s heavily damaged softball complex.

Following the flooding events of May 2019, the entire 100 acre Case Community Park was submerged beneath six feet of flowing water. The impact leveled fences, uprooted large trees, ruined sports playing surfaces and pulled apart electrical connections buried within the sports complex.

Following today’s gift from ONEOK, the Parks Department will oversee repairs to the softball complex in the coming weeks, replacing it to a pre-flood condition in time for the opening of the 2020 softball season.

“We’ve built this wonderful park with great partnerships and community support over the years”, stated City of Sand Springs Parks Director Jeff Edwards. “We’re grateful for ONEOK and their support of our mission to rebuild the softball complex and deliver quality of life services to our citizens.”

Sand Springs Park Friends, Inc. was created in 2007 by the City of Sand Springs City Council to help facilitate an easy, visible tool to generate philanthropic support and create improvements to the City’s parks system. Sand Springs Park Friends, Inc. is a non-profit 501c3 organization registered with the State of Oklahoma and the IRS to accept charitable contributions.

Armstead was first on the board with a three-pointer, then Jackson made it 5-2 before Baylor Franz scored through a foul and tied it up with the and-one. Jade Shrum hit the next deep ball, then Armstead hit two from the charity stripe to double the Bulldogs.

Memorial came storming back, however, scoring fourteen unanswered points for a 19-12 lead early in the second period. Shrum and Bayleigh Cheney hit back-to-back threes to make it a one-point game, but foul trouble allowed the Bulldogs to maintain a 25-20 advantage at the half. The Sandites committed 15 fouls in the first half to the Bulldogs’ six.

Madison Burris kicked off the second half with a three, but Memorial maintained its lead and even pushed it as far as 34-27 before Jackson hit back-to-back twos and Cheney hit a three to tie it at 34-34.

Burris gave the Sandites their first lead since the first period, early in the fourth at 37-36, but Cayren Davis soon retaliated. Armstead tied it with a free throw, then took the lead with a two before Lexi Hensley and Franz scored back-to-back to make it 42-40. The Sandites would not lead again.

Sand Springs will return to action January 4th at 6:30 p.m. with a non-conference road game at No. 18 Ponca City (8-2), who they previously defeated 62-47 in the season opener. Memorial will travel to No. 4 Norman (7-1) for a conference battle January 7th at 6:00 p.m.

Sophomore Journey Armstead led all scorers with 16 points, followed by freshman Hailey Jackson with a career-high 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for her first double-double. Jade Shrum put up 11 and Madison Burris had 10 to put four Sandites in double digits.

The Sandites scored the first eight points of the game before the Defenders rallied back with eight of their own. Green Country never led in the game, but tied it three times in the first quarter before the Sandites went on a nine-point run for a 20-11 lead.

Jackson and Shrum rattled off five-straight to start the second period and took their first double-digit lead at 25-15. The second period saw the Sandites’ best defensive effort, only giving up seven points for a 36-22 locker room advantage.

The third and fourth periods were fairly even, but the Sandites won both despite playing mostly backups. All fifteen available Sandites saw extensive action and nine made their way into the score book. Raegan Padilla remained absent due to illness.

Emily Prather paced the Defenders with 15 points, followed by Kana Rackley with 11 and Ashley Phelan with 10.

Sand Springs will play No. 12 Edmond Memorial (6-3) Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the Championship finals. The Sandites are looking for their second gold ball of the season after wining the Bishop Kelley Invitational two weeks ago. The Bulldogs are making their first finals appearance after placing fourth at the Bixby Invitational. Green Country will play for third place against the Oklahoma City Storm (10-7).

Josh Minney was the star of the first period, scoring the Sandites’ first two buckets and assisting the third. After putting up the first points of the game, the Sandites fell behind 6-2 before Minney took a steal coast to coast, then passed to Jaeden Hurd for an easy two at 8-6. Davon Richardson tied the game up briefly before Khiry Montgomery hit the final basket of the quarter. The Sandites found themselves down after the first quarter for only the second time this season.

Richardson kicked off the second quarter with a three, Tadrian Davis retaliated, Marlo Fox drained two from the charity stripe, then Davis reclaimed the lead once again. That would be the last lead of the game for the Warriors. Fox iced a three and Cason Savage took a steal to the house to make it 18-14 and the Warriors never recovered. By halftime the Sandites held a 23-20 lead.

The Warriors continued to play close throughout the third period, cutting it to 31-30 with a three-pointer from D’Marius Dobbins and a two from Levi Schrader. Fox hit a three of his own, but Dobbins had the final say of the quarter.

Dobbins made it a one-point game once again, early in the fourth, but this time it was Daren Hawkins with the retaliatory three to make it 39-35. The Sandites held a healthy margin throughout the fourth quarter and the Warriors never got within four.

Sand Springs will return to action in the Championship finals against the winner of Bixby (3-4) vs. Enid (3-2) Saturday at 8:00 p.m. HFC will play the losers of that game at 2:00 p.m. for third place.

CPHS Basketball: Girls beat Grant 87-8, biggest win of the decade - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (6-1) was short one starter Thursday afternoon at the Stride Bank Center, but it didn’t matter. Raegan Padilla sat on the bench, sick, but the rest of the starters joined her just a few minutes into the game. Sand Springs rolled to an 87-8 win against U.S. Grant (1-4) in the first round of the Enid Holiday Classic, and all but one player scored.

The Sandites wasted no time, with Hailey Jackson rebounding for two, and Journey Armstead putting back three straight two-point baskets in the first 90 seconds. McKayla Ahboah got the Lady Generals on the board with a free throw, but Jade Shrum sank a three and Jackson scored three-straight twos to make it 16-1. With 3:56 remaining in the first quarter, Coach Joshua Berry benched his starters.

The second string pushed the Sandites to a 27-1 advantage with baskets from Jentry Hughes, Bayleigh Cheney, and McKenzie Harris. The starters rejoined the game in the second period, but for less than two minutes.

Sand Springs scored 38-straight points before Karla Zuniga made the Generals’ first field goal, and ended the second quarter up 57-3. All fifteen eligible/healthy players saw action in the half, and Abby Hughes, Darrian Jordan, Fayth Walker, and Avery Tanner scored buckets late in the second period.

The second half saw a running clock on both substitutions and throw-ins, only stopping for timeouts, preventing the Sandites from matching their 109-39 offensive performance against Muskogee last season. They did, however, make their best defensive effort since at least 2007 (as far back as Sandite Pride records go), with their largest point-differential of that era.

Armstead led all scorers with 17 points, and was the only player in double-digits. Thirteen Sandites scored more than Grant’s leading scorer, Yohanna Hall, who hit a three in the third quarter.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Green Country (4-2) vs. Enid (2-6). Grant will play the loser of that game at 12:30 p.m.

Sand Springs trailed for only 49 seconds in the game. Dailyn Spencer stole the Sandites’ opening possession and Ben Coleman scored first for the Defender’s only lead, which soon evaporated behind consecutive baskets from Marlo Fox and Davon Richardson. It took a while for the Sandites to find their rhythm, and the Defenders kept it close for most of the first period. Garrett Tankersley hit a three to make it 14-13 late in the quarter, but the Sandites went on a 12-point run spanning two quarters and ended the first up 21-13.

Joseph Garringer broke up the run to make it 26-15, but the Sandites soon kicked off an 11-point streak with baskets from Jaeden Hurd, Josh Minney, Richardson, and Fox. By halftime the Sandites had nearly doubled their foes at 46-24.

The third quarter saw the biggest run of the morning as five Sandites combined for 19 consecutive points to make it 67-26, and by the end of the quarter they led 74-28, their best third-quarter advantage of the season thus far. The Defenders rattled off nine-straight points in the fourth, their longest run of the game.

Fox led all scorers for the sixth time this season, with 18 points. He was 4-of-5 from outside the arc. Hurd posted a season-best 14 points, Richardson added 13, and Minney and Daren Hawkins had 10 apiece. Spencer and Garringer scored 13 apiece to lead the Defenders.

The Sandites will play the winner of Hoops For Christ (9-4) vs. the Oklahoma City Storm (13-5) Friday at 5:00 p.m. Green Country dropped to 5-4 on the season, and will play the loser of the HFC vs. OKC game Friday at 11:00 a.m.

Boys’ Preview

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Sand Springs boys are still undefeated this season at 6-0, coming off a 59-46 win at Owasso. They will kick off the tournament at 11:00 a.m. Thursday against the Green Country Defenders (5-3). The only mutual opponent between the two teams is the Hoops For Christ Warriors. Sand Springs defeated HFC 69-50, while HFC beat Green Country 77-53.

If the Sandites win their first game they will play Friday at 5:00 p.m., and if they lose they’ll play at 11:00 a.m. Their second-round foe will either be the Oklahoma City Storm (13-5), or a rematch with HFC. Despite only being a homeschool team, OKC has notched wins against several large public schools, including Norman, 6A No. 19 Mustang, and 5A No. 18 Guthrie. They are riding a five-game win streak. HFC has won their last three games since falling to Sand Springs, including a dominant 70-46 win over 5A No. 10 Collinsville.

On the opposite side of the bracket are four unranked 6A teams.

U.S. Grant (2-6) vs. Bixby (2-4). Statistically speaking, Grant is the worst team in 6A, with their average game being a 14.9 point defeat. Grant’s only mutual opponent with CPHS is HFC, who they lost to 58-38. Bixby allows the second-most points in 6A, and their only mutual opponent with CPHS is Union. The Sandites beat Union 75-74, while Union beat Bixby 90-61.

The fourth quarterfinal pairing is Ponca City (3-5) vs. Enid (5-3). The Sandites beat Ponca 75-64 in their season opener. The Wildcats are coming off a 63-48 win over Guymon. Enid has won three-straight games, and is coming off a fifth-place performance at Woodward. They do not have any mutual opponents with the Sandites.

Girls’ Preview

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Sand Springs girls are 5-1 on the season, riding a four-game win streak that includes a Bishop Kelley Invitational Championship. Most recently they beat Owasso 62-45. They will play U.S. Grant (1-3) Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The two don’t have any mutual opponents, but Grant has the worst-ranked offense in 6A and their average game ends in a 27.5 point loss. The Sandites will be without Raegan Padilla for at least the first two games. She has been fighting sickness for weeks.

On Friday they will play at 12:30 p.m. following a loss, or 6:30 p.m. following a win. Their opponent will either be Enid (2-6) or Green Country (4-2). Enid went 0-3 at the Woodward tournament, but is coming off a 47-16 win over Grant. Green Country is coming off a 53-29 loss to NOAH.

On the other end of the bracket is 6A No. 12 ranked Edmond Memorial (4-3) vs. HFC (2-3). Sand Springs and Memorial are 16th and 17th, respectively, in 6A offense, and 11th and 13th in defense, making for a close match-up on both fronts. Edmond is coming off a 45-42 win over No. 20 Westmoore. HFC is coming off a 34-22 loss to NOAH.

The fourth quarterfinal pits Lawton (1-4) vs. OKC Storm (8-7). The Sandites and Storm have no mutual opponents, but OKC does have a 6A win against Enid. Lawton is riding back-to-back losses, including a 72-27 beatdown by Ponca City, who the Sandites bested 62-47 in the season opener.

Games will be played at the Stride Bank Center at 302 South Grand. The 5,000 seat arena is located in downtown Enid.

Sand Springs won three-straight Bishop Kelley titles from 2015-2017, then took third place in 2018 before reclaiming the throne this year behind a 25-point performance from sophomore Journey Armstead. Armstead was named All-Tournament MVP, and Madison Burris also made the All-Tournament team.

Hailey Jackson was first on the board, rebounding a shot from Armstead. Armstead hit a pair from the charity stripe, then Raegan Padilla took a steal coast to coast for a 6-0 lead. The Trojans wouldn’t be stymied for long, as Trinity Jackson broke up the Sandites’ run, and Makenna Burch scored a layup and a free throw for the lead.

Sand Springs broke up the nine-point run with a pair of free throws from Jade Shrum, then Armstead closed out the period with a layup and two free throws for the 12-11 lead.

Jenks briefly took the lead early in the second period at 16-14, but the Sandites went on an 11-2 run for a comfortable 25-18 halftime advantage.

Trinity Jackson scored the first points of the second half, but Sand Springs rattled off ten-straight for a 35-20 advantage with baskets from Hailey Jackson, Armstead, Burris, and Padilla. The Trojans went on a streak of their own to cut it to 35-29, but Armstead got the final say of the quarter.

Burch swished a three to kick off the final stanza, but Sophia Regalado rebounded a missed free throw for two, and Padilla hoofed a steal down to Armstead for two more. Armstead stayed hot with a free throw and another layup to reclaim the double digit advantage.

Burch hit a three to make it 51-41 with a minute to play, but the Sandites ran out the clock, Shrum added a free throw, and Jackson made an easy to end the night.

Armstead led all scorers with 25, closely followed by Burch with 20. Hailey Jackson was the only other player in double digits, scoring 10.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at Owasso (2-2), while Jenks will travel to No. 19 Bartlesville (3-2) next Friday. The Sandites and Trojans will meet again on January 7th in the first of two Frontier Valley Conference battles.

CPHS Football scoreboard operator Leroy Paddock celebrated after 54 year career

As the Sandite football team closed out the 2019 season at Sand Springs Memorial Stadium, Leroy Paddock closed out a 54-year career as the Sandites’ scoreboard manager. Paddock was presented with a commemorative plaque from Superintendent Sherry Durkee, Athletic Director Rod Sitton, and Head Coach Dustin Kinard between quarters in the Sandites’ season finale 34-7 loss to Booker T. Washington.

Paddock’s 54-year tenure began in 1965, when the scoreboard was managed from a small elevated box on the sideline, and he had the privilege of running the clock throughout the team’s historic 1966 State Championship campaign.

Sand Springs celebrated its 100th year of Sandite Football this season, and Paddock has been part of the team for more than half of it. He worked under fourteen head coaches and saw the Sandites through both 12-win seasons and 0-10 seasons when the stands were half empty. The team picked up 134 wins with Paddock running the clock.

“Leroy’s attention to the referees is unbelievable,” stated Bob Walker, the 20+ year Voice of Sandite Athletics. “Friday nights can get hectic in the press box, with spotters, 25-second clock operator, members of the press, plus messengers delivering PA notes. Leroy’s focus on the referee’s signals to stop and re-start the clock is completely professional.”

Paddock’s service hasn’t been limited to Friday night football. He has also operated the scoreboard for junior varsity and youth football, soccer, baseball, and softball throughout the year. He will continue to serve the community at Sandite baseball and softball events for the foreseeable future, but is no longer able to climb the steep bleachers at Memorial Stadium, which does not have an elevator to the press box.

Board of Education presents Sandite Spirit Award to Landon Durborow

Angus Valley Elementary second-grade student Landon Durborow was presented with a Sandite Spirit Award at Monday evening’s Board of Education meeting. Board President Jackie Wagnon praised Durborow for his “servant’s heart.”

“He has developed wisdom beyond his years,” said Wagnon. “He knows the meaning of being a servant.”

“This little boy definitely has Sandite Spirit,” added Angus Valley Principal Angelia Noel. “He comes by it honestly. He comes from a great family full of great people. Every day when you see him he has a smile on his face. He stays after lunch and helps the custodians clean up. No one’s ever asked him to do that, he just does it because he’s sweet.”

Durborow is also a star on the elementary cross country team, placing in the top-25 at this year’s Case Cross Country Invitational and running a 7:23 mile at the Holland Hall Invitational.

Scott Watkins receives Pacesetter Award from Sand Springs Board of Education

Charles Page High School Assistant Baseball Coach Scott Watkins was presented with the Pacesetter Award at Monday evening’s Board of Education meeting for his work in maintaining and improving the Sandite Athletic Complex where the Baseball and Softball teams play. Watkins is a CPHS alumni and former Major League Baseball player, who had stents with the Tulsa Drillers and the Minnesota Twins.

Not only has Watkins been coaching the baseball team and maintaining the Athletic Complex grounds throughout the fall Softball season, during which the Lady Sandites hosted a Regional Tournament, but he has also been working to restore his home, which fell victim to the historic flooding that devastated Sand Springs this past May.

“I was fortunate enough to play at the highest level of the game and play on some beautiful fields,” said Watkins. “I want our kids to feel the same way. To play on a beautiful field that’s well manicured. That may be the closest chance they ever get to play on a field like that.”

City of Sand Springs awards $2 million in improvements at Canyons at Blackjack Ridge golf course

The Sand Springs City Council approved two resolutions during the October 28th City Council meeting which put into play construction plans to improve the Canyons at Blackjack Ridge Golf Club. The approved plans propel new contracts which are funded by the 2018 general obligation bond measure, which allocated $2M to make much needed improvements to the City’s course.

“These initial improvements will concentrate on the interior bones of the facility as well as the underground infrastructure work throughout the course,” stated Jeff Edwards, Parks Director for the City. “We’re building the foundation of the future for this facility. In doing this difficult work up front, we’ll create seamless transition options for future improvements with minimal downtime in course play.”

Approximately $1M of the funding will be invested on a significant clubhouse remodel project. The work will produce a much more modern, space-efficient layout for golf pro, special event and golf course grill operations including a fresh look to the clubhouse overall. The remainder of funds will be invested into a modernized and automated irrigation system, golf green replacement package and more.

“These improvements will play a major role in our goal to offer the best possible golfing experience we can,” stated Director of Golf Brian Talley for the City, whose golf operations team has made great strides with the popular course recently.

All of this work will commence before the year’s end. Golfers who enjoy one of Oklahoma’s top- rated golf courses in the Tulsa metro area should plan to see the Canyons at Blackjack Ridge closing for play during the spring and summer months of 2020. The temporary golf course closure has been determined to be the most efficient and least disruptive method for progress in order to expedite the remodel and construction work.

The clubhouse is expected to be closed December 2019 through July 2020. Staff will operate from a mobile office to keep the golf course open until the course construction company mobilizes and commences work. The golf course itself is slated to be closed from late February 2020 through much of the summer, hopefully reopening before Labor Day.

All of this work is designed to keep this tourism and quality of life destination in top condition and ready for play for many years to come. The golf pros at the Canyons and City Parks staff are excited to show the public the finished result, and are already planning a special event when the course reopens before the fall of 2020.

Once work begins, golfers can follow construction progress and receive updates from staff at the Canyons at Blackjack Ridge’s Face Book page. Sand Springs authorizes $2 million in renovations to Canyons at Blackjack Ridge golf course

The Sand Springs Municipal Authority passed a resolution authorizing more than $2 million in renovations to The Canyons at Blackjack Ridge golf course and clubhouse Monday evening. The entire clubhouse will undergo extensive remodeling, and improvements will be made to the course greens, tee-boxes, sand bunkers, and cart trails.

City of Sand Springs staff and Talley Golf staff (the company Sand Springs contracts with to operate the golf course) have spent the last eight months working with GH2 Architects and Heckenkemper Golf to identify needed renovations at the course and clubhouse.

The clubhouse renovations will significantly reduce the pro shop and grill seating area to allow for the construction of a new banquet hall. The restrooms and other facilities will all be upgraded, and the outside of the building will receive a substantial face lift.

A new greens irrigation loop will be installed on the course, and the greens will be resurfaced with ultradwarf Bermuda. The new grass is a warm-season species that will grow best in the summer and should save the course time and money. The sand bunkers will be renovated to improve drainage and will have new white sand installed.

The course was last renovated during the early 1990s and was closed for nearly 18 months, according to a report. Both the greens and bunkers have significantly shrunk since that renovation due to erosion and encroaching grass.

Several other items will also be included in the bidding documents as alternates, but due to budget constraints it’s unclear what additional improvements will be possible.

The project will go to bid in October and the course/clubhouse will be fully closed from December through July. Projected expenses are $1 million for the course and $1.05 million for the clubhouse. The funding was approved by Sand Springs citizens in a 2018 General Obligation Bond election.

2019 Meet the Sandites Photo Gallery

Charles Page High School held its annual Meet the Sandites event Thursday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The event recognizes fall athletics like Cross Country, Football, Volleyball, Softball, Cheer, and Dance, as well as Band and Color Guard.

Hosted by the Sandite Quarterback Club in conjunction with Sand Springs Youth Football & Cheer, the event allows every single youth football, cheer, and dance team from elementary on up to run through the tunnel and storm the field.

The Church That Matters Tailgate Crew held their first tailgate party of the season prior to the event. The church grills hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and more prior to every home football game. Each week a different athletic program is selected as the fundraiser recipient. The Sandite Basketball teams raised more than $1,700.
