CPHS Basketball: Sandites headed to State Tournament - presented by Inkwell Printing

For the second time in the past three years the Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (19-7) is headed to the Class 6A State Tournament following an Area Consolation Finals win over No. 18 ranked Owasso (13-14). The No. 9 Sandites never once trailed in the 64-50 Saturday night victory at the Catoosa Activities Center.

The Sandites started the game on fire, scoring on their first three field goal attempts for a 7-0 lead before Owasso even got off a shot. Kyler Mann got the Rams on the board with a putback and Trenton Ellison sank a three, but Cason Savage responded with two twos. Davon Richardson scored threes on the first and last buckets of the period to bookend a 14-7 lead. 

Marlo Fox got on the board with a three to start the second period and Josh Minney added another three for their biggest lead of the half at 24-11 before the Sandites got into foul trouble. Mann made a traditional three and added two more free throws on the next possession, then Ellison cut it to 24-20 with a four-point play. Fox and Savage added a bucket apiece to end the half 28-20.

The Rams had more rebounds, more steals, and only four fouls to the Sandites’ nine, but struggled with field goal accuracy, going 7-of-20 in the first half. 

Sand Springs really began to run away with it in the third quarter, holding their foes to only three field goals for a 43-28 lead. Their biggest lead of the game came at 50-32 in the fourth, but Owasso refused to go down without a fight and won the final quarter. Both teams ended up well into the double bonus with Ethan Oakley fouling out at the 5:21 mark and Mann fouling out at 3:11. 

Richardson, a senior University of Central Oklahoma-commit, led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Minney with 16, Fox with 13, and Savage with 10. Mann led Owasso with 14 points, and Ellison was the only other Ram in double digits with 11.

The first round of the State Tournament will be played Thursday at Memorial High School Veterans’ Arena in Tulsa. The semifinals and Championship will be played at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center. The Sandites’ opponent and game time have yet to be determined.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 66-60 to No. 1 Booker T. Washington - presented by Inkwell Printing

Down by three points with 14.6 seconds left to play, Davon Richardson scored through contact and the Catoosa Activity Center erupted with excitement. Unfortunately for Sand Springs, the University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior was called for charging and the storybook comeback wouldn’t come to pass.

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team (18-7) won the second half against No. 1 Booker T. Washington (20-5) Friday night in the Area Championship, but was unable to overcome a lopsided second period and fell 66-60. The Washington Hornets will advance to the State Tournament, while the Sandites will get a second chance in the Area Consolation bracket Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Richardson and Marlo Fox drained threes on their first two possessions, then Fox scored two on a steal from Richardson for an 8-0 lead before Kameron Parker got the Hornets on the board with a three. Richardson added two from the charity stripe, but Kansas-commit Bryce Thompson and Oklahoma-commit Trey Phipps scored five on back to back steals. Fox added a second three-pointer, but Washington went on a seven point run and took their first lead on a three from Phipps. Josh Minney hit a layup to end the first quarter 15-15. 

Ijai Johnson and Richardson traded threes to open the second quarter, but the Hornets went on a nine point run before Fox broke it up with a three. Phipps rattled off a trio of free throws, then Jalen Breath and Phipps hit layups for the 34-21 advantage. Fox broke up that run with a reverse layup, Thompson scored two more, then Fox scored two from the stripe to end the half down 36-25. 

The Sandites were a perfect 5-of-5 on three pointers in the first half and outshot the Hornets all around, but Washington had the Sandites drastically outsized in the paint and came away with six offensive rebounds while giving up none, and won the steal battle seven to two.

Sand Springs narrowly won a back and forth third period after a four point run from Minney cut it to 49-39. A five point Sandite streak in the fourth got them as close as 54-47, but a three from Johnson and a dunk from Breath gave the Hornets a twelve-point lead entering the final two minutes. Sand Springs wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Richardson scored two on a steal from Savage, Thompson hit a free throw, then the Sandites went on a run. Fox hit two free throws, then Richardson scored back to back putbacks on steals from Savage and Minney to make it 60-55 with 44 seconds left. 

Savage sent Phipps to the line and the Hornet missed his shot. Minney rebounded and Richardson drew a foul and sank two to make it 60-57. Minney sent Thompson to the line for two and he made both, but Breath fouled Savage on a three and the Sandite hit all three to make it 62-60.

Richardson sent Thompson to the line for one, and it looked like he would have a shot to tie the game up when he scored through contact. But the basket was waved off for charging and he was ejected for his fifth foul as the Sandites’ final hopes evaporated. Phipps and Thompson added three more free throws to end the game.

Thompson led all scorers with 23 points, closely followed by Richardson with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his tenth double-double of the season. Fox and Phipps scored 19 apiece, Minney added 13 for the Sandites and Johnson had 10 for the Hornets.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 13 Putnam City North (14-9) vs. No. 18 Owasso (12-13). Catoosa High School is located at 2000 South Cherokee Street.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites win Regional Championship 59-51 over Broken Arrow - presented by Inkwell Printing

Saturday night at the Ed Dubie Field House was a special occasion for more reasons than one. The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (18-6) avenged two regular season losses to No. 11 Broken Arrow (18-7), they won consecutive Regional Championships for the first time in school history, and they gave Head Coach Eric Savage his 100th win at Sand Springs.

The Sandites were explosive in the first half, taking a 37-18 lead into the locker room, and used aggressive defense to stave off a second half Broken Arrow rally that went 33-22 in the Tigers’ favor. Junior standout Marlo Fox scored 22 points to lead all scorers, and University of Central Oklahoma-commit Davon Richardson added 21 points and 7 rebounds.

Fox hit a three on the Sandites’ opening possession, then Josh Minney turned a steal into a free throw and the home team never trailed. Ja’ell Talley hit a pair of twos to tie it, but Cason Savage and Fox responded with back to back threes. The Sandites worked their lead up to 17-9 before giving up a trio of free throws to end the period. 

The second quarter was even more lopsided as the Sandites ran away with it 20-6 behind a nine point performance from Richardson. Sand Springs took its first double digit lead at the 4:17 mark, then went on an 11-2 run capped by back to back steal and scores from Cason Savage and Richardson to make it 37-18 at the half.

The Tigers battled back hard in the second half and cut their deficit to 46-35 at the end of the third, but the Sandites found their feet in the fourth and kept up for the most part. Minney drew his fifth foul with 1:04 to play, sending Talley to the line for a traditional three that made it 57-51, but Richardson hit a pair of free throws to end the game.

Broken Arrow was led by Talley and Anthony Allen with 14 apiece and Tyler Pinder with 11.

Both teams will advance to the Area playoffs. Sand Springs will play No. 1 Booker T. Washington (19-5) Friday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m. The Sandites are the only team in Class 6A to beat the Hornets this season, doing so 66-62 at home in January, but lost 69-56 on the road two weeks ago. The winner of that game will advance to State, while the loser will move to the Area Consolation bracket.

Broken Arrow will play No. 19 Yukon (14-11) Friday at 8:00 p.m. in the first round of the Area Consolation bracket. The loser of that game will be eliminated, and the winner will have to win another game to advance to State. Area playoff sites have yet to be announced.

CPHS Basketball: Boys survive Enid 61-52, Fox scores 26 - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (17-6) survived a feisty team of Enid Plainsmen (8-16) in the first round of the Regional Tournament Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, winning 61-52 behind a 26-point effort from junior standout Marlo Fox.

The Plainsmen won the first quarter 13-9, but the Sandites got it together in the second with Fox scoring five to start the stanza. Fox ended the half with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second period, for a 28-27 locker room lead.

Enid came storming back in the third, scoring eight in a row for their biggest lead of the game at 35-29. The home team finished strong with three buckets from Ethan Oakley to tie it at 39-39.

Sand Springs may have won by nine, but it was far closer throughout the fourth quarter. They used an 8-1 run for the 47-40 advantage, but three pointers from Corey Simmons Jr. and Carter Owens cut the deficit to 49-47. Fox scored four in a row from there and the Plainsmen never got within three points again. Desperation fouls allowed the Sandites to inflate their lead in the final minutes.

Fox’s 26 points were one shy of his career-high, and they were enough to lead all scorers. Owens paced the Plainsmen with 20, followed by Telin Phillips with 13. Davon Richardson put up 15 for the Sandites and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Both teams had six players in the book.

The Sandites will host No. 11 Broken Arrow (18-6) Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for the Regional title, and both teams will advance to the Area playoffs. Broken Arrow is 2-0 against the Sandites this season, beating them 63-51 at home in January, and 55-54 on the road in the regular season finale. Sand Springs is looking to win back-to-back Regional titles for the first time in school history.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites upset defending State Champs, No. 2 Booker T. Washington

Student section chants of “this is our house” filled the air as Sand Springs toppled the defending 6A State Champions from No. 2 ranked Booker T. Washington (7-3, 4-1) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. No. 7 Charles Page High School (11-1, 3-1) led by as many as 16 points in the first half before the Hornets battled back, but ultimately the home team held on for a 66-62 overtime win.

Coming into the season, seventh-year Head Coach Eric Savage had only two teams left in the Frontier Valley Conference that he had not beaten. The Sandites crossed No. 6 Union off that list last month, and now they have taken down No. 2 Booker T. Washington as well. The brutally physical game saw a combined 43 fouls, with four foul outs and one injury.

Five-star University of Kansas-signed senior Bryce Thompson led all scorers with 27 points, followed by University of Oklahoma-commit Trey Phipps with 24, but the Sandites had a more balanced team effort, with three players in double digits.

Marlo Fox scored 22 to lead the Sandites for the tenth time this season, followed by Davon Richardson with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his tenth career double-double. Cason Savage had a season-best ten points.

The home team opened on an 8-0 run with baskets from Fox and Cason Savage, and worked the lead up to an incredible 17-2 before the Hornets battled back to end the quarter 18-9. 

RaShannon Phillips hit a pair of free throws to open the second quarter, but Davon Richardson kicked off another eight-point run to regain the 15-point lead. 

By halftime the Sandites were holding a 33-21 advantage, and Fox added a layup to it to start the third. The Sandites suffered their first big loss just thirty seconds into the half, when Jaeden Hurd had his legs taken out by a Hornet diving for a loose ball. He left the game with a hurt knee and didn’t return. The Hornets went on an eleven-point run late in the third to cut it to 41-39, but Fox ended the quarter with a traditional three. 

Josh Minney hit two free throws to start the final stanza, but soon fouled out and another Hornet run tied it at 46-46 with 5:21 left after a three from Thompson. Fox retaliated with a three and the Sandites remained out front till 2:55 when Daren Hawkins fouled Phillips on a three, and Phillips made it a four-point play to tie it. 

The Hornets drained the clock till 38.2 when Savage fouled Thompson. Thompson made one and the Hornets took their first lead of the game. Richardson tied it with a free throw, then Savage sent Phipps to the line with five seconds left. The Hornet missed both shots and the game headed to overtime. 

Richardson won the tip off and Fox drained a three. Richardson added two more, then Kameron Parker fouled out and Savage made a traditional three for the 61-53 lead before Thompson put the Hornets on the board. Fox added a free throw, Phipps drilled a three, Richardson added a free throw, then Thompson sank a three to make it 63-62.

With 18.6 left Richardson scored two on an inbound throw, then Hawkins added a free throw to secure the win.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference road game at No. 10 Broken Arrow (12-1, 4-0). The Hornets will travel to the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Missouri on Thursday.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites win Enid Tournament 61-36 over Bixby - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team has been unstoppable this season, and they improved their record to 9-0 Saturday night at the Stride Bank Center, beating Bixby 61-36 in the Enid Holiday Classic Championship finals. It was their first regular season tournament title since 2015.

Marlo Fox drained a three to start the game, and the Sandites never trailed. They took a 12-3 lead before the Spartans closed the period with five unanswered points. Sand Springs dominated the second period and took a 33-20 lead into the locker room. They were only up 25-20 after a six-point run from the Spartans, but scored eight straight to end the quarter.

The scoring streak stretched into the second half as they opened the quarter on a six-point run to make it 39-20 before Parker Friedrichsen sank a three. The Sandites went up 47-27 to end the third and maintained a 20-point lead for the entire fourth quarter.

Friedrichsen led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Jaeden Hurd. Hurd put up 14 points to match his season-best and to lead his team for the first time this year. Fox scored 13 and was named the Tournament MVP. Josh Minney scored 11 and Davon Richardson added 9. Minney and Richardson were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday, January 4th at 4:00 p.m. with a non-conference game in Ponca City (1-5). They previously beat Ponca 75-64 in the season opener. Bixby (4-5) will compete at the Bartlesville Tournament beginning January 9th. Sand Springs and Bixby will meet again January 31st in a Frontier Valley Conference match-up at Sand Springs.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites survive HFC, advance to tournament finals - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School continued its undefeated start to the season Friday evening at the Stride Bank Center, rolling to a 52-45 victory against the Hoops For Christ home school team (9-5) in the Enid Holiday Classic semifinals. The Sandites are now 8-0 for the first time in at least the past decade.

Josh Minney was the star of the first period, scoring the Sandites’ first two buckets and assisting the third. After putting up the first points of the game, the Sandites fell behind 6-2 before Minney took a steal coast to coast, then passed to Jaeden Hurd for an easy two at 8-6. Davon Richardson tied the game up briefly before Khiry Montgomery hit the final basket of the quarter. The Sandites found themselves down after the first quarter for only the second time this season.

Richardson kicked off the second quarter with a three, Tadrian Davis retaliated, Marlo Fox drained two from the charity stripe, then Davis reclaimed the lead once again. That would be the last lead of the game for the Warriors. Fox iced a three and Cason Savage took a steal to the house to make it 18-14 and the Warriors never recovered. By halftime the Sandites held a 23-20 lead.

The Warriors continued to play close throughout the third period, cutting it to 31-30 with a three-pointer from D’Marius Dobbins and a two from Levi Schrader. Fox hit a three of his own, but Dobbins had the final say of the quarter.

Dobbins made it a one-point game once again, early in the fourth, but this time it was Daren Hawkins with the retaliatory three to make it 39-35. The Sandites held a healthy margin throughout the fourth quarter and the Warriors never got within four.

Sand Springs will return to action in the Championship finals against the winner of Bixby (3-4) vs. Enid (3-2) Saturday at 8:00 p.m. HFC will play the losers of that game at 2:00 p.m. for third place.

CPHS Basketball: Undefeated Sandites rout Green Country 80-45, presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2015 Thursday morning at the Stride Bank Center, routing the Green Country Defenders 80-45 in the first round of the Enid Holiday Classic. The undefeated Sandites led by as much as 76-28 before the Green Country starters outscored the Sand Springs third-string 17-6 in the fourth quarter.

Sand Springs trailed for only 49 seconds in the game. Dailyn Spencer stole the Sandites’ opening possession and Ben Coleman scored first for the Defender’s only lead, which soon evaporated behind consecutive baskets from Marlo Fox and Davon Richardson. It took a while for the Sandites to find their rhythm, and the Defenders kept it close for most of the first period. Garrett Tankersley hit a three to make it 14-13 late in the quarter, but the Sandites went on a 12-point run spanning two quarters and ended the first up 21-13.

Joseph Garringer broke up the run to make it 26-15, but the Sandites soon kicked off an 11-point streak with baskets from Jaeden Hurd, Josh Minney, Richardson, and Fox. By halftime the Sandites had nearly doubled their foes at 46-24.

The third quarter saw the biggest run of the morning as five Sandites combined for 19 consecutive points to make it 67-26, and by the end of the quarter they led 74-28, their best third-quarter advantage of the season thus far. The Defenders rattled off nine-straight points in the fourth, their longest run of the game.

Fox led all scorers for the sixth time this season, with 18 points. He was 4-of-5 from outside the arc. Hurd posted a season-best 14 points, Richardson added 13, and Minney and Daren Hawkins had 10 apiece. Spencer and Garringer scored 13 apiece to lead the Defenders.

The Sandites will play the winner of Hoops For Christ (9-4) vs. the Oklahoma City Storm (13-5) Friday at 5:00 p.m. Green Country dropped to 5-4 on the season, and will play the loser of the HFC vs. OKC game Friday at 11:00 a.m.

CPHS Basketball Preview: Sandites travel to Enid Tournament, presented by Inkwell

Boys’ Preview

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Sand Springs boys are still undefeated this season at 6-0, coming off a 59-46 win at Owasso. They will kick off the tournament at 11:00 a.m. Thursday against the Green Country Defenders (5-3). The only mutual opponent between the two teams is the Hoops For Christ Warriors. Sand Springs defeated HFC 69-50, while HFC beat Green Country 77-53.

If the Sandites win their first game they will play Friday at 5:00 p.m., and if they lose they’ll play at 11:00 a.m. Their second-round foe will either be the Oklahoma City Storm (13-5), or a rematch with HFC. Despite only being a homeschool team, OKC has notched wins against several large public schools, including Norman, 6A No. 19 Mustang, and 5A No. 18 Guthrie. They are riding a five-game win streak. HFC has won their last three games since falling to Sand Springs, including a dominant 70-46 win over 5A No. 10 Collinsville.

On the opposite side of the bracket are four unranked 6A teams.

U.S. Grant (2-6) vs. Bixby (2-4). Statistically speaking, Grant is the worst team in 6A, with their average game being a 14.9 point defeat. Grant’s only mutual opponent with CPHS is HFC, who they lost to 58-38. Bixby allows the second-most points in 6A, and their only mutual opponent with CPHS is Union. The Sandites beat Union 75-74, while Union beat Bixby 90-61.

The fourth quarterfinal pairing is Ponca City (3-5) vs. Enid (5-3). The Sandites beat Ponca 75-64 in their season opener. The Wildcats are coming off a 63-48 win over Guymon. Enid has won three-straight games, and is coming off a fifth-place performance at Woodward. They do not have any mutual opponents with the Sandites.

Girls’ Preview

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Sand Springs girls are 5-1 on the season, riding a four-game win streak that includes a Bishop Kelley Invitational Championship. Most recently they beat Owasso 62-45. They will play U.S. Grant (1-3) Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The two don’t have any mutual opponents, but Grant has the worst-ranked offense in 6A and their average game ends in a 27.5 point loss. The Sandites will be without Raegan Padilla for at least the first two games. She has been fighting sickness for weeks.

On Friday they will play at 12:30 p.m. following a loss, or 6:30 p.m. following a win. Their opponent will either be Enid (2-6) or Green Country (4-2). Enid went 0-3 at the Woodward tournament, but is coming off a 47-16 win over Grant. Green Country is coming off a 53-29 loss to NOAH.

On the other end of the bracket is 6A No. 12 ranked Edmond Memorial (4-3) vs. HFC (2-3). Sand Springs and Memorial are 16th and 17th, respectively, in 6A offense, and 11th and 13th in defense, making for a close match-up on both fronts. Edmond is coming off a 45-42 win over No. 20 Westmoore. HFC is coming off a 34-22 loss to NOAH.

The fourth quarterfinal pits Lawton (1-4) vs. OKC Storm (8-7). The Sandites and Storm have no mutual opponents, but OKC does have a 6A win against Enid. Lawton is riding back-to-back losses, including a 72-27 beatdown by Ponca City, who the Sandites bested 62-47 in the season opener.

Games will be played at the Stride Bank Center at 302 South Grand. The 5,000 seat arena is located in downtown Enid.
