The Charles Page High School wrestling team is sitting in tenth place after session three of the OSSAA 6A State Championships in Oklahoma City. Of the Sandites’ six qualifiers, two advanced to the placement rounds. Josh Fincannon placed third at 220 pounds, and Seth Jones advanced to the 126 finals and will wrestle this evening.

Josh Fincannon (34-12) won his 220 quarterfinal by 5-2 decision against Moore senior Frank Morales (17-13) but was pinned by defending State Champion and University of Central Oklahoma-committed Mustang senior Judson Rowland (45-4) in the semifinals. In consolation he won a 4-3 decision against Bixby junior Isaac Gibson (13-10) and a 2-1 tie-breaker against Broken Arrow senior Torrance Ingram (26-10).

Seth Jones (26-5) won a 5-0 decision against Norman North Senior Jacob Zimmer (29-10) and a 3-0 decision against Stillwater junior and former State Champion Cade Nicholas (44-8) in the 126 semifinals. He will take on Broken Arrow senior Jackson Cockrell (33-9) in the finals in a rematch of their Regional semifinal meeting. He beat Cockrell 8-2 in a regular season dual before falling 14-10 at Regionals.

Chris Kirby (31-12) won the 160 quarterfinal with an easy 30-second pin of Norman North senior Dylan Smith (24-14), but fell 11-5 to two-time defending State Champion Drake Vannoy (31-4) from Jenks. In consolation he was pinned by Choctaw junior Chandler Holman (38-10).

Mitchell Smith (18-7) was pinned by Putnam City junior Kalib Nolan (35-11) in the first round of 113. In consolation he won a 3-0 decision against Edmond North sophomore Aiden Godbehere (26-19) but fell 5-2 to Yukon senior Cooper Mahaffey (31-6).

Blake Jones (24-13) won his 138 wrestle-in match by 14-0 major decision against Choctaw’s Nathan Harjo with ten nearfall points, but lost 5-1 to Edmond Memorial sophomore Bam West (33-4) and 5-4 to Southmoore sophomore Jake Wright (39-7) in consolation.

Sango Whitehorn (10-25) lost his wrestle-in match 11-2 to Yukon junior Conner Columbus (34-12) at 195.

Two former Sandites will be wrestling for State titles. Stillwater’s Carter Young (43-1) will wrestle Broken Arrow junior Blazik Perez (27-7) for the 132 title, and Broken Arrow’s Christian Forbes (26-6) will take on Stillwater freshman Cael Hughes (41-0) in the 106 finals.

Championship finals will begin at 6:00 p.m. The tournament is being held at Jim Norrick Arena at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.

The Charles Page High School wrestling team wrapped up the 2019-2020 season with their eighth consecutive top-ten finish at the OSSAA 6A State Championships in Oklahoma City. Senior Seth Jones kept alive a six year streak of putting Sandites in the finals.

Broken Arrow won the team title for the second straight year, followed by Mustang and Choctaw. The Tigers had three champions and four runners-up while the Broncos had four champions and one runner-up.

The Sandites qualified six wrestlers for State, and four are still alive. Seth Jones will compete for a State title Saturday, while three others are still fighting to place on the consolation end.

Young will wrestle Choctaw sophomore Shaun Muse (35-7) in the semifinals and Forbes will take on Mustang sophomore Shelton Chastain (33-11).

The first round of consolation matches will begin at 5:30 p.m. with semifinals starting at 7:45 p.m. The tournament is being held at Jim Norrick Arena at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.

OSSAA Wrestling: Final ranking and State Tournament preview presented by Inkwell Printing

It’s the final week of the 2019-2020 Oklahoma high school wrestling season and on Friday 140 wrestlers will converge at Jim Norrick Arena in Oklahoma City to battle for the Class 6A State title. Coverage of the event is sponsored by Inkwell Printing, the official provider of all Sand Springs spirit wear.

In addition to the 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A tournaments, which will all run concurrently, there will also be a girls’ tournament for the first time in OSSAA history. The tournament will feature 131 athletes in ten weight classes, with no school size divisions.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win fifth-straight District Championship - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (10-5) won their sixth-straight dual and fifth-straight District Championship Tuesday afternoon at Clyde Boyd Middle School, 65-12 against Muskogee (1-4). It also clinched their fifth-straight ten-win season.

Sand Springs lost only two matches, received five forfeits, and recorded four pins and one tech fall in their biggest win of the season.

Caden Vaughn (9-3) received a forfeit at 120 to start the dual, then Ethan Norton (5-15, 5-20) pinned Dayton Bowlin in 13 seconds, Carter Goodman (8-9) received a forfeit, Blake Jones (21-7, 47-21) scored a 15-0 second period technical fall against Davaun Jones, and Preston Medlin (17-12, 30-34) pinned Jason Coston in 1:22 for the 29-0 lead.

Antonio Zapia got the Roughers on the board with a pin of Chase White (8-18, 8-20), but the Sandites went right back to winning after Chris Kirby (25-8, 83-32) and Dakota Taylor (3-15, 3-22) picked up forfeits. Tegan Campbell (1-0) won his varsity debut match by pinning Ty Williams in 3:46, then Brooks Dudley (21-14, 31-22) received a forfeit and Santana Naugle (1-5, 4-14) escaped with a 1-0 win against Kenan Adams.

State Qualifier Devion Williams was the next and last Rougher to score, pinning Robbie Parrish (7-14, 9-29) at 285. Shane Wolf (12-12) won a 13-7 decision over Jacob Wolf, then Harley Newberry (7-11) pinned Haden Scraper in 34 seconds to finish the tournament.

Sand Springs wrestling will return to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with a road dual against No. 6 Jenks (5-1). With the district title clinched, they will advance to the Dual State Championship in Enid on February 14th.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win fifth-straight dual 52-27 against Sapulpa - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (9-5) won their fifth-straight dual Tuesday afternoon at Clyde Boyd Middle School, 52-27 against Sapulpa (2-4) in the second round of the District Dual tournament. The Sandites are in search of their fifth-straight District title and will take on Muskogee (1-2) in the finals.

Harley Newberry received a forfeit at 113 to start the dual and the Sandites never trailed. Colton Luker pinned Zaltana Keener in 0:28 to make it 12-0 before the Chieftains got on the board with Parker Lecoq’s pin against Ethan Norton. JJ Long followed it with a pin of Hunter Hilger to tie it up.

Blake Jones put the home team out front again with a pin of Dallas Wilson in 0:48, Preston Medlin won an 11-1 major decision against Luke Young, and the home team would hold onto the lead for the duration.

Simon Young got a pin against Chase White for the visitors, but Chris Kirby and Dakota Taylor both received forfeits to make it 34-18. K’Den Stepp scored last in an 11-10 shootout with Sango Whitehorn.

Josh Fincannon and Robbie Parrish received forfeits, then Cayden Miller ended the dual with a pin of Shane Wolf at 106.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win fourth-straight dual 45-28 against Ponca City - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (8-5) won their fourth-straight dual Tuesday afternoon at Clyde Boyd Middle School, 45-28 against No. 19 Ponca City (2-6) in the first round of the District Dual tournament. The Sandites are in search of their fifth-straight District title and will also take on Muskogee (1-2) and Sapulpa (2-3) today.

Shane Wolf gave up a 13-2 major decision to Preston Lee at 106, but battled out of a dangerous position late in the third that could easily have turned into a tech or pin. Mitchell Smith gave the home team the lead with a pin of Jack Swenson in 1:49.

The Sandites benefited from two returners who have been out with injury. Caden Vaughn got a 4-2 decision over State Qualifier Ethan Kemble, then Seth Jones won an 8-2 decision against Ryker Agee for the 12-4 lead. 

Gabe Rowland pinned Carter Goodman to even up the dual score, but Blake Jones got the home team back on track with a 5-0 decision against Cameron Jackson, followed by a pin from Preston Medlin against State Qualifier Shayden Trant in 5:40.

Rayden Agee pinned Chase White, Chris Kirby pinned Michael Rutledge in 0:56, then Joseph Leauitt pinned Dakota Taylor and Landon Newlin pinned Sango Whitehorn to reclaim the lead at 28-27. 

Thomas Naugle picked up a forfeit to put the Sandites back out front, and Brooks Dudley clinched the dual with an easy pin against Chase Mehl in 3:51. Josh Fincannon bumped up to heavyweight and iced the cake with a pin of H.B. Bowers in 4:43.

CPHS Wrestling: Mid-Season Statistics, District Tournament preview - presented by Inkwell

Senior Chris Kirby is only 14 career pins shy of Daton Fix’s school record 83.

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (7-5) will host a district quad Tuesday afternoon at Clyde Boyd Middle School. The team with the best record at the event will advance to the Dual State Tournament on February 14th at Enid’s Stride Bank Center.

Sand Springs is looking for its fifth consecutive District title and fourteenth overall. Coverage of the event is sponsored by Inkwell Printing, the official provider of all Sandite spirit wear. The quad will kick off with a Highway 97 Rivalry match-up against Sapulpa (2-3). The Sandites beat the Chieftains 69-6 last year and have won four-straight duals dating back to 2013. Sapulpa has one State Qualifier in sophomore Isaiah Smith.

Next up for the Sandites is Muskogee (1-2). The Minutemen beat the Roughers 69-10 last year and have won three-straight meetings dating back to 2013. Muskogee’s lineup includes one returning State Qualifier in heavyweight Devion Williams.

Wrapping up the evening will be Ponca City (2-5). The Sandites won last year’s dual 47-25 and have won eleven consecutive meetings dating back to 2009. The Wildcats have two State Qualifiers: Ethan Kemble and Shayden Trant.

All four teams competed at the Bobby Lyons Invitational this year. Sand Springs placed 8th, Ponca City was 11th, Sapulpa was 13th, and Muskogee was 15th.

No. 1 Broken Arrow won its 13th-straight District title by a combined score of 158-0. No. 2 Mustang won its district by a combined 214-18. No. 3 Choctaw won its district 204-23. No. 4 Edmond North won its district 193-24. No. 5 Stillwater won its district 169-40. No. 6 Edmond Memorial won its district 115-84. No. 12 Union won its district 104-86. District 6 is the only district left to wrestle, and based on current rankings the Sandites will likely earn the No. 7 seed if they advance to Dual State.
