CPHS Soccer: Jack Bratcher scores hat trick in 6-1 rout of Muskogee

The Charles Page High School boys’ soccer team (2-1) posted a dominant 6-1 non-district win against Muskogee (0-1) Thursday night at Memorial Stadium behind a three-goal effort from Jack Bratcher. It was the first hat trick in the junior forward’s career, and the first of the season for the Sandites.

Muskogee was first on the board with a goal in the sixth minute, but Bratcher tied it up in minute 13 with a header. He recorded a brace in the 30th minute, then Fernando Saldana put the Sandites up 3-1 with just thirty seconds left in the half.

Luke Jeffus made his way into the score book fifteen minutes into the second half. Bratcher had his first shot at a hat trick three minutes later but had a penalty kick saved. He made up for it in the 62nd minute, then Saldana recorded the final goal in minute 69 for a brace.

Sand Springs had twelve shots on goal in the match while limiting Muskogee to only three. Junior goalie Xander Quiroga came away with two saves.

Sandite Soccer will take two weeks off before playing Enid (4-1) in a non-district road match. Muskogee will play a non-district match against Union (0-1) after Spring Break.

CPHS Soccer: Girls beat Muskogee 2-1 in shootout

For the second time this week the Charles Page High School girls’ soccer team (2-1) went to an overtime shootout and won, beating Muskogee (0-1) 2-1 in front a small Thursday night crowd at Memorial Stadium.

Neither team scored in the first half, and they combined for only ten on-goal shots in regulation. Sandite goalie Ali Day made three saves and Annika Kerns had five for the Roughers.

Destiny Ladd scored the Roughers’ goal in the 47th minute, but Julia Wolf tied it up in the 58th and the match was a stalemate from there.

Because the match was non-district it went straight to a shootout with each team receiving five shots from the penalty kick marker. Arial Esparza made the Sandites’ first kick and Ladd missed for Sapulpa, but Carson Sargent missed her kick and Kendra Dennis tied it up.

Wolf and Rhyan Gray had their shots saved, but Demi Deshazo put the Sandites up 2-1 and Raney Sumpter missed her kick. Karsen Lynch made it 3-1 to clinch the victory.

Both teams will take time off for Spring Break. Muskogee will return to action on the 24th at 6:00 p.m. with a non-district match against Union (0-1). Sand Springs will travel to Enid (2-1) for a non-district match, also on the 24th at 6:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Sandites run-rule Sapulpa 20-1 in season opener, Jordan hits home run

The Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team handily won their season-opener by 20-1 five-inning run rule against Sapulpa (1-4) Tuesday afternoon on the road. The game was close till the fifth inning, and the Sandites only led 2-1 before pilling on 18 runs to secure the win.

Lauren Hammock handled all of the pitching for Sand Springs, throwing only two hits and seven walks with one strikeout. Freedom Hicks got the loss for Sapulpa with twelve hits and thirteen walks. Kylie Burns tossed the final third of the fifth inning and gave up two walks.

Madison Lee and Nataley Crawford scored the opening runs on a double from Jaden Jordan. Sapulpa loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and Daniah Blation scored the Chieftains’ lone run on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-1.

The game was scoreless for the middle three innings. Raegan Rector hit an RBI single and the Sandites scored five more runs on walks to make it 8-1. Taylor Skipper hit a 3RBI single then came in on a triple from Makenzie Burks, who scored soon after on a ground out from Olivia Alexander.

Lee doubled, Crawford singled, and both came in on a home run from Jordan. Hammock hit a single and six straight walks made it 20-1 before Makayla Littlebear caught a pop fly at short to end the onslaught.

Sand Springs softball will return to action after spring break with home games against Jenks (1-1) and Kellyville (0-0).

OSSAA Basketball State Tournaments indefinitely postponed due to Coronavirus

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) announced Thursday afternoon that the high school State Basketball Tournament will be indefinitely postponed. The boys and girls’ tournaments were scheduled to begin Thursday afternoon.

For the second time in the past three years the Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (19-7) qualified for the State Tournament, and they were supposed to play No. 5 Midwest City (22-3) at Tulsa Memorial Veterans Arena at 8:30 p.m.

“We have decided to postpone all OSSAA-sponsored activities for this weekend,” announced Executive Director David Jackson in a noon press conference. “We haven’t decided when those activities will be rescheduled. We’ll work on that as soon as we can.”

According to Jackson, some school districts are considering extended spring breaks to further limit the spread of Coronavirus, and he declined to provide even a generalized timeline on when the games would be either rescheduled or canceled outright.

School districts will retain the right to determine whether they will continue with regular season athletic events.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites sweet Putnam City West in district action

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team improved to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in district action with a sweep of Putnam City West (2-3, 2-2). The Sandites beat the Patriots 9-6 Tuesday on the road and 7-1 Wednesday afternoon at home.

On Tuesday the Sandites built a dominant 9-1 lead before giving up five runs in the bottom of the seventh. They out-hit the Patriots 12-6 but gave up two hits, five walks, and an error in the seventh.

Both teams stranded two apiece in the first inning but the Sandites were first on the board with an RBI single from Brock Swanson to score Hayden Blair. The Patriots tied it up in the bottom of the third when Jakob Brandenberger scored on an error.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the third and Taegan Cook scored on a ground out from Kaegan Murray. Ethan Sartin hit a double to bring in Gabe Glenn and Brycen Peterman for the 4-1 lead. They added two more runs in the fifth when Jacob Shields scored on an error and Swanson hit a double to bring in Brooks Dudley.

Murray hit a double to start the sixth and three straight walks gave him a free run. Swanson hit a single to bring in Kaden Young and Keaton Campbell for the final Sandite runs of the game.

Sand Springs stranded two in the seventh and the Patriots came in to try and stage a rally. Three walks and an error loaded the bases with a free run, then Wyatt Pitt hit a 2RBI double. Nate Gresham added a 2RBI single and two more walks reloaded the bases, but Campbell caught a fly ball and Sebastian Cassidy pitched a strikeout to save the game.

Jaxon Skaggs (1-0, 4-2) picked up his first win of the season, throwing four hits, five strikeouts, and six walks. Young pitched two hits and one walk in the seventh inning, then Cassidy (0-1, 4-4) earned a save with one walk and one strikeout.

On Wednesday it was Northeastern State University-commit Tatum Watie (2-0) who led the team to victory, tossing three hits, eight strikeouts, and six walks in 5.2 innings. Peterman (0-0, 1-1) threw 1.1 innings in relief and gave up only one hit.

The Patriots were the first to bat and took their only lead of the game on an error in the top of the first. Peterman tied it up on an error in the bottom of the inning, and the rest of the game was a shutout.

Sand Springs loaded the bases with a trio of walks in the third inning, then Shields hit an RBI single to bring in Peterman. Young scored on a passed ball, then Swanson hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Campbell and make it 4-1.

Peterman hit an RBI double to score Glenn, then came in on a single from Sartin in the fourth. Blair scored the final run of the game on an error in the sixth.

Sand Springs Baseball will return to action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Chickasha (2-4) in day one of the Owasso Festival. Putnam West will travel to Oologah-Talala (4-3) Thursday at 5:00 p.m.

CPHS Soccer: Boys beat Sapulpa 2-1 in overtime shootout

For the second year in a row and the third time in the past four years, the Charles Page High School boys’ soccer team (1-1) won the Highway 97 Rivalry. The boys came from behind with a late goal to force an overtime shootout against Sapulpa (1-2) Tuesday night at the Westside Sports Complex.

The Sandites were the more aggressive and accurate team offensively, with eight shots on goal in the first half, but Sapulpa keeper Gabe Boyd was exceptional and saved all of them. Nick Ryan got the Chieftains on the board with a goal in the 28th minute, with his team’s only on-goal shot of the half, and they would lead for the next 44 minutes.

Fernando Saldana had a shot blocked by Boyd in the first half that Hayden Brooks appeared to put back, but the goal was disallowed and Brooks was called offsides.

Boyd came up with four more saves in the second half, and Sandite goalie Xander Quiroga had two.

The Chieftains were given six yellow cards, leading to two ejections, and were out-manned for most of the second half. TJ Hale drew his second yellow card in the 58th minute and Evan Finch was ejected in the 68th minute.

Saldana finally hit pay dirt for the Sandites, sneaking one in the bottom left of the net with only eight minutes left to play.

Because the match was non-district, they went straight to a penalty kick shootout to decide the winner. The first three kickers for both teams made their shots. Saldana, Jack Bratcher, and Luke Jeffus scored for the Sandites, while Caden Stevenson, Joel Carlson, and Hayden Moore made their kicks for Sapulpa.

The next shot from both teams was saved, then Cameron Summerton put the visitors up 4-3. Quiroga saved a shot from Damien Kloeckler to secure the win.

Sandite Soccer will return to action Thursday at 8:00 p.m. with a non-district home match against Muskogee (0-0). Sapulpa will take two weeks off before hosting Claremore (1-2).
