CPHS Baseball: Sandites sweet Putnam City West in district action

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team improved to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in district action with a sweep of Putnam City West (2-3, 2-2). The Sandites beat the Patriots 9-6 Tuesday on the road and 7-1 Wednesday afternoon at home.

On Tuesday the Sandites built a dominant 9-1 lead before giving up five runs in the bottom of the seventh. They out-hit the Patriots 12-6 but gave up two hits, five walks, and an error in the seventh.

Both teams stranded two apiece in the first inning but the Sandites were first on the board with an RBI single from Brock Swanson to score Hayden Blair. The Patriots tied it up in the bottom of the third when Jakob Brandenberger scored on an error.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the third and Taegan Cook scored on a ground out from Kaegan Murray. Ethan Sartin hit a double to bring in Gabe Glenn and Brycen Peterman for the 4-1 lead. They added two more runs in the fifth when Jacob Shields scored on an error and Swanson hit a double to bring in Brooks Dudley.

Murray hit a double to start the sixth and three straight walks gave him a free run. Swanson hit a single to bring in Kaden Young and Keaton Campbell for the final Sandite runs of the game.

Sand Springs stranded two in the seventh and the Patriots came in to try and stage a rally. Three walks and an error loaded the bases with a free run, then Wyatt Pitt hit a 2RBI double. Nate Gresham added a 2RBI single and two more walks reloaded the bases, but Campbell caught a fly ball and Sebastian Cassidy pitched a strikeout to save the game.

Jaxon Skaggs (1-0, 4-2) picked up his first win of the season, throwing four hits, five strikeouts, and six walks. Young pitched two hits and one walk in the seventh inning, then Cassidy (0-1, 4-4) earned a save with one walk and one strikeout.

On Wednesday it was Northeastern State University-commit Tatum Watie (2-0) who led the team to victory, tossing three hits, eight strikeouts, and six walks in 5.2 innings. Peterman (0-0, 1-1) threw 1.1 innings in relief and gave up only one hit.

The Patriots were the first to bat and took their only lead of the game on an error in the top of the first. Peterman tied it up on an error in the bottom of the inning, and the rest of the game was a shutout.

Sand Springs loaded the bases with a trio of walks in the third inning, then Shields hit an RBI single to bring in Peterman. Young scored on a passed ball, then Swanson hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Campbell and make it 4-1.

Peterman hit an RBI double to score Glenn, then came in on a single from Sartin in the fourth. Blair scored the final run of the game on an error in the sixth.

Sand Springs Baseball will return to action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Chickasha (2-4) in day one of the Owasso Festival. Putnam West will travel to Oologah-Talala (4-3) Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
