CPHS Baseball: Sandites beat Union 4-2 in extra innings at Regional Tournament

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (22-10) defeated Union 4-2 in a ten-inning Regional playoff game Wednesday afternoon in Owasso, but suffered their first shutout of the season at the hands of the host team. The Rams (33-5) beat the Sandites 5-0, but Sand Springs can still advance to the State Tournament if they can upset Owasso twice on Thursday.

The defending State Champions from Union (11-23) were eliminated after falling 7-0 to the Rams, who improved to ten shutouts on the season with their fourteenth-straight win.

Owasso can clench their fifth straight Regional title and 33rd overall with a win on Thursday. They are ranked 42nd in the nation by PerfectGame and won their 13th State Championship in 2015.

The Sandites will have to beat Owasso in back-to-back games Thursday if they want to make it to the State Tournament for the first time since 2011. The uphill battle will kick off at 3:00 p.m. If they win the first game, they’ll play again at 5:00.

CPHS 4 Union 2

The Sandites led for four innings against Union after taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Northern Oklahoma College-commit Cale Savage hit his second home run of the season to kick off the inning, then Keaton Campbell brought in Malachi Burks on an RBI single.

Seth Villines (4-0, 5-0) got the start on the mound and threw two hits, four strikeouts, and four walks in five innings. After giving up a homer to Trent Desmet in the bottom of the sixth, he was replaced by Cal Watkins (1-1). Watkins threw two hits and a walk, giving up the game-tying RBI double to JD Geneva, and was replaced by John Miller (2-1, 7-2).

Miller hit a single in the seventh but was stranded, then struck out two to send the game into extra innings. Miller ended the game with four strikeouts, no walks, and only one hit, and was relieved by Preston Berg (0-1) late in the eighth. Berg tossed four balls and was replaced by Brycen Peterman (1-1). Peterman finished out the night and earned his first career win with two hits, two strikeouts, and one walk.

Sand Springs finally got back out front in the tenth inning, spurred by a lead-off double from Villines. Burks and Kaegan Murray were hit by pitch to load the bases. Villines was walked in and Burks scored on a passed ball for the final score of 4-2.

Owasso 5 CPHS 0

Eastern Oklahoma State College-signee David Sandlin (5-0) threw eleven strikeouts against the Sandites, the most of any pitcher this season. He gave up only four hits and one walk, giving Sand Springs their first shutout in the past 35 games.

Ben Banker (6-2, 7-2) got the start and the loss on the mound, throwing five hits, four strikeouts, and four walks. Jaxon Skaggs (3-1) pitched the final third of the fifth inning, then Michael Miller took over for the remainder of the night. Miller threw two hits, two strikeouts, and two walks in two innings.

Sand Springs stranded two runners in the first and Owasso stranded two in the second. The Rams got on the board with an RBI double from Jack Hammond in the third and Sandlin struck out the side that inning.

Brody Green singled and scored on an error in the fourth. Connor Beichler walked in the fifth, then Cameron Thompson and Nathan Ackenhausen hit back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0. The Sandites stranded two more hits in the fifth. Hammond hit an RBI single and Ackenhausen brought him in on a double in the seventh.

CPHS Soccer: Sandites edge Enid 1-0 in playoffs

The Charles Page High School boys’ soccer team (13-2) won their first-round playoff game against Enid (9-7) Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The match was their third-straight win and fifth shut out of the season.

A rematch of a non-district 2-1 Sandite overtime win from mid-March, the game was chippy from the very beginning with the Plainsmen earning four yellow cards over the course of the night. Marcos Arambula and David Garcia received one yellow card apiece, and Miguel Garcia received his second in the 62nd minute, leaving his team one man short.

Gustavo Saldana split the uprights 27 minutes in and Fernando Saldana had a shot saved in the 30th. With eight minutes left in the half Angel Esparza took a corner kick and the Plainsmen were called for a handball in the box. Fernando Saldana sank the penalty kick for the only point of the night.

Luke Jeffus took a penalty kick with two minutes left in the half, but Angel Neri made the save. Kaleb Brooks got off a pair of shots in the final two minutes, sending one just over the top of the goal, and one into Neri’s arms.

Jack Bratcher made a pair of quick drives downfield early in the second half, but was beat to the kick by Neri the first time, and was fouled by David Garcia the second time. Gustavo Saldana took a direct free kick from the 18-yard line but split the uprights.

Sandite goalie Ethan Tippit had several impressive saves in the second half. Neri also stopped shots from Gustavo Saldana and Kaiden Cox.

In the final thirty seconds Ivan Delgadillo sent a shot a hair wide, Brayan Rodriguez sent a corner kick to Fernando Marrufo, and Marrufo’s header missed right as time expired.

The Sandites will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. when they travel to nationally-ranked No. 3 Jenks (15-0-1). The Trojans recorded their tenth shutout of the season and fifth-straight shutout with an overtime golden goal penalty kick, 1-0 against Norman (11-4).
