CPHS Wrestling: Sandites fall to defending State Champions in Dual State Semifinals

The dual season came to an end Saturday afternoon for the Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (15-5). The Sandites made it to the Dual State semifinals for the third time in the past four years but fell 45-18 to the defending State Champions from No. 2 Choctaw (8-2).

The Yellowjackets buried Sand Springs under an 18-0 deficit, sweeping the first four matches before Scott Patton got the Sandites on the board.

Seth Jones (16-12, 38-25) fell 6-5 to Shaun Muse in the first match at 126. The Sandite scored takedowns in the second and third periods and led 5-4 till the final seconds when he gave up a takedown with eight seconds left.

The Sandites forfeited 132 to State Runner-Up Colt Newton. Blake Jones (21-11) lost a 1-0 decision to Jace Dean and Gabe Johnson pinned Preston Medlin (13-20).

Patton (26-1, 61-23) broke up the streak with a win over Zeke Coleman. He scored two takedowns and four reversals for an 18-5 major decision.

Choctaw went on another three-match run from there. Chandler Holman pinned Chris Kirby (29-11, 51-21), Zane Coleman pinned Braden Dahl (9-15, 10-18) and Dylan Ward won a 5-2 decision against Riley Magee (15-16, 20-21) for a 33-4 lead.

Freshmen Kaden Glass (28-8) and Brooks Dudley (10-6) kept the Sandites alive. Glass majored Tony Opichka 12-3 with nine nearfall points and Dudley won a 2-0 decision against Zavier Smith.

Choctaw clinched the dual at heavyweight as Marquan Journey worked up an 8-0 lead on Josh Fincannon (25-17, 39-34) before the Sandite was disqualified for stalling, giving the Yellowjackets an insurmountable 39-11 lead.

Christian Forbes (28-9) won a 3-2 decision over Jacob Quinton and Brendon Wiseley (32-11, 46-19) majored Levi Harris 8-0, but Jackson Speer ended the dual with a Choctaw victory, pinning Ethan Norton (0-3).

The dual season may be over for Sand Springs, but the Sandites have two more weeks of tournament competition remaining. They will return to action Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the 6A-East Regional Tournament in Jenks.

CPHS Wrestling: Dual State Preview - No. 5 Sand Springs vs. No. 2 Choctaw

Class 6A No. 2 ranked Choctaw (7-2) and No. 5 Charles Page High School (15-4) will meet Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the OSSAA 6A Dual State Championship in Shawnee.

Sand Springs defeated No. 4 Edmond North 34-31 in the quarterfinals, while Choctaw defeated No. 9 Owasso 33-31.

The Sandites and Yellowjackets have only two mutual opponents this season. Sand Springs fell 39-31 to 3A No. 2 Comanche, who also defeated Choctaw 35-33. Sand Springs defeated Owasso 53-21.

They have competed at one tournament together. Choctaw placed second at the Perry Tournament of Champions with 154 points and Sand Springs placed fourth with 126. Both teams voided three weight classes at the event. The Yellowjackets were without top-ten ranked wrestlers in Caleb Williams and Colt Newton. The Sandites were without Riley Weir and Kaden Glass.

Sand Springs is 1-4 in head-to-head matches against the Yellowjackets this season. Shawn Muse defeated Seth Jones 6-4, Jace Dean pinned Caleb Phillips, Chandler Holman pinned Chris Kirby, and Tony Opichka defeated Josh Fincannon 2-1, all at Perry. The only Sandite win was Dayvon Taylor with a pin of Colten Krebs, and Taylor is out of the lineup.

If the Sandites survive Choctaw it’ll mark their third Finals appearance in the past four years. Sand Springs was the Dual State Runners-Up in 2016 and won their first title in 2017, but fell in the quarterfinals last season.

On the other side of the bracket is No. 1 Broken Arrow (11-1) vs. No. 3 Mustang (20-2). The finals will be held at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites upset No. 4 Edmond North 34-31 at Dual State

For the third time in the past four seasons the Sandite wrestling team is headed to the OSSAA Class 6A Dual State Semifinals after upsetting No. 4 Edmond North (9-3) Friday afternoon in Shawnee. No. 5 Charles Page High School (15-4) won eight matches in the 34-31 victory.

Freshman Kaden Glass (27-8) started the dual in the Sandites’ favor with a 7-6 decision over Christian Cantu at 195 pounds, but State-Placer Jake McCoy gave the Huskies their first and only lead of the day with a 10-0 major decision against Brooks Dudley (9-6).

Josh Fincannon (25-16, 39-33) edged out Jordan Iwuchukwu 3-2 at heavyweight and the Sandites never again relinquished their lead. Christian Forbes (27-9) had a wild showdown against Garrett McBride, taking a 16-6 lead before the Husky began to battle back in the final minute. McBride picked up a stalling point and reversed for a trio of back points but couldn’t overcome the deficit and fell 16-11.

Brendon Wiseley (31-11, 45-19) got the first fall of the night at 113, sticking Connor McBride in 1:15 for a 15-4 team lead. However, the Huskies got those points right back with a big upset when Nate Becker pinned two-time State Champion Riley Weir (17-7, 108-34).

Seth Jones (16-11, 38-25) got the Sandites back on track, taking an 11-1 lead on State Qualifier Dillon Martin before securing the fall at 5:47, and Blake Jones (21-10) majored Carson Trindle 10-0.

Josh Parks pinned Joseph Mattison (2-9) in 3:09 and Jaxon Randall won a 4-1 decision against Preston Medlin (13-19) to make it 24-19.

Scott Patton (25-1, 60-23) won his 24th straight match with an 11-1 major decision against Jayden Villalobos, Charles Floyd pinned Braden Dahl (9-14, 10-17) in 3:15 to make it 28-25.

Chris Kirby (29-10, 51-20) wrestled up to 170 and clinched the dual with his 25th fall of the season in 2:12 against Braden Bowman. Trey Bowman finished the dual with a pin of Riley Magee (15-15, 20-20) in  3:51.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against No. 2 Choctaw (7-2) who won 33-31 against No. 9 Owasso (7-8) in their quarterfinal. The tournament is being held at Firelake Arena in Shawnee. No. 1 Broken Arrow (11-1) and No. 3 Mustang (20-2) won the other quarterfinal duals.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites beat Bixby 57-21, Seth Jones decisions State Champion

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (14-4) won its final dual of the regular season Tuesday evening at No. 15 Bixby (3-7), rolling over the Spartans 57-21 with eight pins.

Both teams forfeited one weight class apiece and Sand Springs won nine out of twelve matches. The only Sandite victory that didn’t come by fall was arguably the most impressive as Seth Jones (15-11, 37-25) won a 6-4 decision over Zach Blankenship.

Blankenship, a previously-undefeated freshman and two-time Junior High State Champion was ranked first in the State with six tournament titles this season. Jones gave up three points in the second period but scored takedowns in the first and third to end the Spartan’s undefeated season.

Christian Forbes (26-9) received a forfeit to start the dual and Brendon Wiseley (30-11, 44-19) racked up a 12-0 lead on Garrett Washington before sticking his foe at 5:06 for a 12-0 lead. Bixby got on the board at 120 with a forfeit to Karsten Rice. Blake Jones (20-10) followed up Seth Jones’s win by pinning Ainslie Lane in 1:59 to make it 21-6.

Aidan Kirkland won an 8-4 decision over Joseph Mattison (2-8) at 138 pounds then Sand Springs went on a run. Preston Medlin (13-18) pinned Caleb Stephens in 1:09, Scott Patton (24-1, 59-23) pinned Aidan Hill in 2:31, and Chris Kirby (28-10, 50-20) pinned Isaac Gibson in 3:39 for a 39-9 advantage.

The Spartans tried to battle back with falls at 170 and 182. Jack Puckett pinned Braden Dahl (9-13, 10-16) and Andrew Plumlee pinned Santana Naugle (3-9) to keep the dual alive, but Brooks Dudley (9-5) pinned Christian Brylewski to clinch the victory for Sand Springs. The last two matches were over in less than a minute as Kaden Glass (26-8) pinned Brady Neasby in 0:18 and Josh Fincannon (24-16, 38-33) pinned Tommy Baty in 0:23.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 12:00 p.m. when they wrestle No. 4 Edmond North (9-2) in the first round of the OSSAA 6A Dual State Championship.

CPHS Basketball: Bruins upset No. 5 Sand Springs 45-37

Eric Savage’s Sandites have yet to beat Bartlesville twice in a season, and that trend continued in 2019 as the unranked Bruins upset Class 6A No. 5 Charles Page High School 45-37 to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Sandites (14-6, 8-4) won 64-42 against Bartlesville (9-10, 3-7) earlier this season, but were unable to repeat after giving up ten steals and shooting only 17% from three-point range.

The first half saw seven tie scores and seven lead changes with the home team holding a narrow 29-28 halftime advantage, and the Sandites even took a one-point lead late in the fourth before giving up eight points in a row to end the night.

Holden Bryant drew first blood for Bartlesville but Marlo Fox, Davon Richardson, and Josh Minney went on a six-point run for the first Sandite lead of the game. A volley of three-pointers from Tayo Dina and Jaylin Oliver put the Bruins up 12-9, bur Minney laid up and Richardson made a three-point play for the 14-12 lead.

Neither team managed back-to-back field goals in the second quarter. Cale Savage and Jaeden Hurd made their way into the book for Sand Springs while Adam Nakvinda and Shane Simpson scored for Bartlesville.

After combining for 31 points in the second quarter both teams started the second half gassed and put up only four points apiece in the lowest-scoring stanza of the season for Sand Springs.

Dina drained a three to start the fourth quarter but Richardson scored through a foul and picked up the free throw. Fox laid up for a brief lead before Nakvinda reclaimed it for the duration of the game.

Sand Springs will look to get back in the win column next Tuesday at Bixby (3-15, 1-9) who they previously dominated 84-43. Bartlesville will also travel to Bixby this Friday.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites clinch Conference title, beat Bartlesville 50-38

The Lady Sandites have been on a warpath this season and Bartlesville was the last obstacle between them and the Frontier Valley Conference title. The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (16-4, 12-0) stormed past the eighth-ranked Bruins (15-4, 7-3) Tuesday evening, and it wasn’t even close.

Sand Springs jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back, ultimately winning 50-38 over the defending Conference Champions. No. 10 Union (15-5, 9-2) is the only team left that can tie the Sandites’ record, but Sand Springs has the head-to-head tie-breaking win over the Redskins.

University of Nevada-commit Jena’ Williams led all scorers with twenty points, but Sand Springs had two players right behind them. Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter led her team with nineteen points and ten rebounds, and Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson had sixteen points and seven rebounds.

Sand Springs didn’t surrender a basket till the final minute of the first period when Lydia Knollmeyer scored a putback to end the streak. Johnson scored six points in the period, Kersgieter had five, Isabella Regalado drained a three, and Darrian Jordan capped the period at 16-2.

Williams got hot early in the second period with three free throws and a layup to get her team back within ten, but Kersgieter scored back to back layups to break up her run. Sand Springs won that period but only barely, and held a 28-13 lead at the half. Regalado hit her second three of the night and Madison Burris and Reagan Padilla also got on the board.

The home team put up their best numbers in the third period and cut their deficit back to ten points. Johnson hit back to back layups for their biggest lead of the night at 35-18, but the Bruins scored six in a row with baskets from Chloe Martin and Trinity Crowder. Burris hit a pair of free throws from there but Williams drained a three to end the quarter 39-29.

Kersgieter went on a five point run to start the fourth and Padilla added two before Williams scored five of her own. Johnson and Kersgieter scored back to back for the 50-34 advantage and the Sandites sent in the backups for the final two minutes. Fourteen Sandites saw action and six made their way into the scorebook.

Sand Springs will return to action next Tuesday at No. 18 Bixby (12-8, 6-5). The Bruins will also travel to Bixby for their next game on Friday.
