CPHS Wrestling: Sandites fall to defending State Champions in Dual State Semifinals
/The dual season came to an end Saturday afternoon for the Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School wrestling team (15-5). The Sandites made it to the Dual State semifinals for the third time in the past four years but fell 45-18 to the defending State Champions from No. 2 Choctaw (8-2).
The Yellowjackets buried Sand Springs under an 18-0 deficit, sweeping the first four matches before Scott Patton got the Sandites on the board.
Seth Jones (16-12, 38-25) fell 6-5 to Shaun Muse in the first match at 126. The Sandite scored takedowns in the second and third periods and led 5-4 till the final seconds when he gave up a takedown with eight seconds left.
The Sandites forfeited 132 to State Runner-Up Colt Newton. Blake Jones (21-11) lost a 1-0 decision to Jace Dean and Gabe Johnson pinned Preston Medlin (13-20).
Patton (26-1, 61-23) broke up the streak with a win over Zeke Coleman. He scored two takedowns and four reversals for an 18-5 major decision.
Choctaw went on another three-match run from there. Chandler Holman pinned Chris Kirby (29-11, 51-21), Zane Coleman pinned Braden Dahl (9-15, 10-18) and Dylan Ward won a 5-2 decision against Riley Magee (15-16, 20-21) for a 33-4 lead.
Freshmen Kaden Glass (28-8) and Brooks Dudley (10-6) kept the Sandites alive. Glass majored Tony Opichka 12-3 with nine nearfall points and Dudley won a 2-0 decision against Zavier Smith.
Choctaw clinched the dual at heavyweight as Marquan Journey worked up an 8-0 lead on Josh Fincannon (25-17, 39-34) before the Sandite was disqualified for stalling, giving the Yellowjackets an insurmountable 39-11 lead.
Christian Forbes (28-9) won a 3-2 decision over Jacob Quinton and Brendon Wiseley (32-11, 46-19) majored Levi Harris 8-0, but Jackson Speer ended the dual with a Choctaw victory, pinning Ethan Norton (0-3).
The dual season may be over for Sand Springs, but the Sandites have two more weeks of tournament competition remaining. They will return to action Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the 6A-East Regional Tournament in Jenks.
