CPHS Wrestling: Dual State Preview - No. 5 Sand Springs vs. No. 2 Choctaw
/Class 6A No. 2 ranked Choctaw (7-2) and No. 5 Charles Page High School (15-4) will meet Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the OSSAA 6A Dual State Championship in Shawnee.
Sand Springs defeated No. 4 Edmond North 34-31 in the quarterfinals, while Choctaw defeated No. 9 Owasso 33-31.
The Sandites and Yellowjackets have only two mutual opponents this season. Sand Springs fell 39-31 to 3A No. 2 Comanche, who also defeated Choctaw 35-33. Sand Springs defeated Owasso 53-21.
They have competed at one tournament together. Choctaw placed second at the Perry Tournament of Champions with 154 points and Sand Springs placed fourth with 126. Both teams voided three weight classes at the event. The Yellowjackets were without top-ten ranked wrestlers in Caleb Williams and Colt Newton. The Sandites were without Riley Weir and Kaden Glass.
Sand Springs is 1-4 in head-to-head matches against the Yellowjackets this season. Shawn Muse defeated Seth Jones 6-4, Jace Dean pinned Caleb Phillips, Chandler Holman pinned Chris Kirby, and Tony Opichka defeated Josh Fincannon 2-1, all at Perry. The only Sandite win was Dayvon Taylor with a pin of Colten Krebs, and Taylor is out of the lineup.
If the Sandites survive Choctaw it’ll mark their third Finals appearance in the past four years. Sand Springs was the Dual State Runners-Up in 2016 and won their first title in 2017, but fell in the quarterfinals last season.
On the other side of the bracket is No. 1 Broken Arrow (11-1) vs. No. 3 Mustang (20-2). The finals will be held at 6:30 p.m.
