The Lady Sandites came out hot, building a 22-5 lead with back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Isabella Regalado before letting the visitors back into the game.  Maddie Bittle was fouled on a layup and made her free throw, and officially took the lid off the basket for the Lady Spartans. Cassidy Sloan, Sarah Tyree, and Madison Fuhr all got in on the action and cut the lead to 24-15 to end the first.

They ran away with it in the second. Regalado hit a three, Mutiri scored a two, and those were the only field goals the Sandites would score in the lopsided quarter, as the visitors outscored their foes 15-6. The Spartans nearly entered the half with the lead after Kenedy Brown sank a two for the go-ahead points with two seconds left. The Lady Spartans cleared the bench and stormed the court in excitement, but there were two seconds left on the clock and Holly Kersgieter got to shoot a free throw on a technical foul to tie it up 30-30.

The Lady Sandites made up for the second quarter in the second half, however, handily dominating both periods. Sophomore Destiny Johnson hit a basket to start the third in the Sandites' favor, but Kyndal Pirtle sank a three and Bittle shot a free throw to make it 34-32. That would be the last time the Spartans led.

Kersgieter hit a three for the lead, added a pair from the charity stripe, and Sydney Pennington sank a two to make it 39-34. Bittle shot a three to try and slow the Sandites down, but Gloria Mutiri made a layup and a free throw immediately after. Sloan scored the last two Spartan baskets of the evening, but they were broken up by a seven-point run from the Sandites, who led 49-41 going into the final stanza. McGee scored nine in the fourth quarter, including a steal and layup to ice the cake at 67-51.

Bittle led all scorers with 17 points, followed by McGee with 16, Kersgieter with 14, Mutiri with 13, Pennington with 11, and Sloan with 10.

The Lady Sandites will return to action next Tuesday when they host Highway 97 rival No. 19 Sapulpa (5-5), while Bixby will take on No. 10 Owasso (9-5) next Tuesday at home.

Oklahoma Girls High School Basketball: Week Five Rankings and Predictions

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The fourth week of Oklahoma High School basketball has come to an end, still without a consensus number-one team. Five undefeated schools remain and three picked up first-place votes in the latest OSSAA rankings. Last week we picked fifteen games and were 13-2 with an overall accuracy of 85% for the season.

No. 1 Choctaw (1)

The Yellowjackets (7-0) pulled off one of their most powerful wins of the season Friday when they hosted 5A No. 19 Lawton Eisenhower (1-5) and hammered them 78-18. Six of their seven wins this season have been by 30 points or more and their average margin of victory is the best in 6A at 42 points. They also have the number two offense and number one defense. Their schedule has been light, however, with only three ranked opponents and no ranked 6A teams. They received 22 first-place votes this week.

Choctaw will return to action on the 28th at the prestigious Tournament of Champions.

No. 2 Edmond Santa Fe (2)

Edmond Santa Fe (7-0) is tied with Choctaw as the winningest team in 6A. Their wins haven't been as massive as the Yellowjackets', but they've arguably played the tougher schedule. Despite going up against five ranked opponents, they've still held on to the fifth-best margin of victory in the division at 21 points. They hold the No. 6 offense and No. 4 defense in the division and most recently topped No. 11 Norman North (3-2) 55-43. They received two first-place votes this week.

The Wolves will return to action on the 28th at the Sapulpa Girls Tournament.

No. 3 Sand Springs (tied 3)

The Lady Sandites (6-0) are off to their best start in years, pummeling their way through the Bishop Kelley Tournament, and making short work of No. 10 Broken Arrow (2-2). The Lady Tigers trailed by more than 30 points before scoring the final 12 against the Sand Springs bench to make it 66-45. Four Lady Sandites doubled in the affair, led by sophomore Isabella Regalado with 15. They picked up one first-place vote this week.

Sand Springs holds the No. 5 offense, No. 2 defense, and No. 3 margin of victory in 6A. They will return to action after the new year at the Bedouin Shrine Tournament in Muskogee.

No. 4 Putnam City West (tied 3)

Putnam West (6-0) is just a point behind Choctaw in margin-of-victory and took down their first ranked opponent this past week, topping 5A No. 15 Bishop McGuinness (2-2) 86-37 on the road. The Lady Patriots are currently in the middle of the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas where they will resume action on Monday. On Friday they beat Mullen, Colorado (2-5) 53-31, then beat undefeated Liberty, Nevada (6-1) 64-22 on Saturday. They received two first-place votes this week.

West holds the No. 1 offense in the state at 74 points per game and is tied for the No. 2 defense, holding their opponents to 33.

Undefeated at 5-0, the Charles Page High School girls basketball team has more than earned their No. 5 ranking after winning their four game this season against a ranked opponent, and four-straight games by 24 points or more. Senior Oklahoma State University softball-signee Sydney Pennington led her team to a 62-38 victory over the No. 13 Norman North Timberwolves (3-1) with 20 points to win the Bishop Kelley Invitational for the second-straight year.

Things didn't start out as lopsided as they ended, and Sand Springs used a timeout at only 2-2 after the girls gave up several turnovers to start the game. The pep talk seemed to work as the girls pushed ahead to a 10-4 lead before the Timberwolves fought back with three-pointer from Lindsey Waters and a pair of free throws from Taylor Landreth.

The Lady Sandites held a close 10-9 lead going into the second quarter, but outscored their opponents 21-11 for a solid halftime lead. Pennington started off the period with a two, followed by a pair of free throws from junior Ohio State volleyball-commit Gloria Mutiri. Emma Base hit a two for the T-Wolves, but Mutiri sank two more freebies and a two of her own. Sophomore Isabella Regalado hit a goal to make it 20-12, Waters sank a pair from the charity stripe, then Regalado hit two free throws, a three, and a two to make it 27-14. By the end of the half the Sandites were up 31-20.

Norman North came out of the half fired up and Jacie Evans scored three straight to make it 31-24. Sophomore Holly Kersgieter hit back-to-back twos, followed by a pair of free throws from senior Kierra McGee. The lopsided scoring continued until the Sandites held a 50-30 advantage going into the final stanza.

Pennington started the fourth with back-to-back layups, sophomore Jacie Taber scored a two of her own, then Pennington added another to bring her total for the evening to 20. Lilith Brewster cut into the lead with a pair of twos, but Regalado added another three and McGee pushed the lead to 62-34. Norman North got to cut into the deficit a little bit, ending with three points from Landreth and one from Jessika Evans for a final score of 62-38.

Pennington was named the Tournament MVP and Kersgieter made the All-Tournament team as well. Pennington was also on the All-Tournament team last year.

Sand Springs basketball will return to action Tuesday in Broken Arrow when the girls take on the No. 11 Lady Tigers (2-0) and the boys (0-2) battle the No. 10 Tigers (4-1).

The Lady Sandites were like a tsunami, building momentum as the game progressed, posting their highest numbers in the second half and outscoring the home team 22-5 in the fourth quarter.

Bishop Kelley was competitive from the start, but the visitors played hard and aggressive, making off with eight steals for a 17-6 first period advantage. The teams were physical from the very beginning. Sophomore Holly Kersgieter picked off an early pass and sent it to Senior Kierra McGee, who was immediately blocked on a reverse and four girls went down in a scrum that the Comets came out of to tie it up 5-5.

Regalado snagged a steal on the next possession and launched it to Kersgieter for an undefended layup and the Sandites never look back. The Comets scored only one field goal in the second quarter, but the Sandites gave up six points on free throws in a penalty heavy period that ended 29-14.

The home team had their biggest output in the third quarter, scoring nearly half of their total offense. Sophomore Destiny Johnson scored all twelve of her points in the second half, including the first two Sandite field goals of the third quarter. Oklahoma State University softball signed senior Sydney Pennington got in on the action with back-to-back layups, one coming on a steal. Kelley's Micaela Martin followed it up with a pair of her own, and the two teams exchanged blows from there.

Kelley went on a six-point run to cut it to 46-31 shortly before the fourth, but a buzzer-beater three by McGee gave the Sandites momentum for the final period.

Johnson started the final period with a pair of free throws and a pair of goals, one of which came on a steal and reverse from McGee. Martin interjected with a free throw as Kersgieter fouled out, but Pennington hit a two and Regalado added a three in retaliation. The Sandites lost another player when Jacie Taber fouled out, but it didn't slow them down a bit. Mutiri hit a two, followed by McGee, followed by back-to-back baskets from senior Amari Grant almost immediately after she joined the game. Mutiri sealed the game with a free throw to remain undefeated.

The Lady Sandites will return to Bishop Kelley this Thursday for a tournament. They will play 3A unranked Cascia Hall (0-1) at 1:30 p.m. Their next game will be played Friday at either 7:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. depending on if they win or lose.
