CPHS Volleyball: Sandites sweep Bishop Kelley JV 2-0 in home tournament

Sand Springs is on a roll and back to a .500 record after picking up their fifth-straight win Saturday morning in the gold bracket of the Sandite Invitational. The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (6-6) won a 2-0 sweep against the Bishop Kelley Junior Varsity team with sets of 25-21 and 25-19 to remain undefeated on their home court.

Don’t let the JV tag fool you, the Bishop Kelley Red team is no slouch. The girls finished second in their pool on Friday and are the backups to a defending State Championship team.

Cloe Campfield led all scorers with six kills and three aces in the two-set match, followed by Vanessa Wyrick with five kills and two aces. Six Sandites combined for twelve aces in the match.

Sand Springs trailed only twice in the first set, riding a six-point run to a 9-4 lead and never looking back. Caroline Mosier broke up the streak with a kill and an ace, but Campfield responded with three-straight aces. The Sandites led by as much as 22-10 before putting in the second string, and the Comets quickly took advantage with an 11-3 run before a Mosier service error secured the Sandite win.

The home team trailed only twice in the second set as well, with Jessica Flusche scoring an ace for a 9-8 Comet advantage. Jacelyn Smith tied it up and Madison Blaylock aced in a five-point run that the visitors never recovered from.

Sand Springs will get a conference preview game in their next match when they take on Booker T. Washington (5-2) at 12:00 p.m. The Sandites beat Washington 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-22) when they met last year in conference action, but the Hornets are riding a four-game streak as the winners of Friday’s A Pool. The loser of that match will play at 1:00 p.m. and the winner will play at 2:00 p.m. in the Championship finals. An if-needed match will be played at 3:00 p.m.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites go 0-5 at brutally tough Union Tournament

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (1-6) went 0-for-5 at the Union Invitational Tournament this past weekend against a field that was so tough, the defending 6A State Champions could only finish fourth.

Victory Christian (6-1) won sets of 25-23, 25-13, and 25-8, scoring 37 kills, five blocks, and five aces. Sand Springs had the defending 4A State Champions on their heels for most of the first set, leading from 5-4 till 19-18, and tied it three times from there before the Conquerors finished with back-to-back kills.

Victory committed twelve errors in the first set, but cleaned it up from there and the Sandites had to lean entirely on their own abilities. The Conquerors took an early 5-1 lead in set two and Sand Springs never managed to catch up. In set three Victory went on a 15-1 run for a 21-5 advantage and their 6A foes were too far behind to recover.

Sand Springs played a more balanced match against a returning State Qualifier in Edmond North (5-1), falling 25-19, 25-18, and 25-11. The Huskies jumped out to a 6-3 lead in game one, but Devree Youngblood and Madison Burris pushed their team to a 7-6 advantage. The lead changed five more times from there. Burris served back-to-back aces for a 10-8 edge and Youngblood aced for a 13-11 lead, but Edmond won four straight rallies to secure the advantage for the remainder of the set.

After a 3-0 start in set two, the Sandites fell behind and never again got in front of Edmond, but hung close till a six-rally run from the Huskies at 23-13. Cloe Campfield scored two kills, Burris aced, and Sophie Singleton combined on a block with Jacelyn Smith to keep things competitive, but the Huskies eventually put it away.

Game three was a Husky railroad as they won the first nine rallies and never looked back. Senior Kamryn Bacus led all scorers with seventeen kills, one block, and four aces for the Huskies. Campfield led Sand Springs in kills with five, while Burris had four kills and three aces.

In the third Friday match the girls took on the defending 5A State Champions from Bishop Kelley (4-2) and went down 25-18, 25-18, and 25-16. The Comets recorded 29 kills to the Sandites’ 19, led by Abby Medico with ten and Audrey Buford with eight.

Sand Springs led twice in the first set, four times in the second, and only once in the third, but were competitive in all three. Campfield had a team-high five kills, followed by Wyrick and Youngblood with four apiece. Burris had six assists and Mong had five assists and three digs.

Saturday went much the way of Friday, with a pair of 3-0 losses to Union (2-6) and Stillwater (3-5). Stillwater won 25-18, 25-21, and 25-16, then Union won 25-16, 25-22, and 25-20 in the 7th place match.
