CPHS Cross Country: Boys place 7th at Broken Arrow, Girls place 9th

The Charles Page High School cross country teams competed at the Broken Arrow Tigers Meet Saturday. The Varsity Girls placed ninth out of nine teams and the boys were seventh out of nine.

Jazmin Lopez placed 39th out of 68 runners to lead the Lady Sandites with a 5K time of 23:00.09 and Dalton Wilcox placed 38th out 73 runners to lead the boys with a time of 18:14.73.

Sandite Cross Country will return to action Saturday at the 35th Annual Holland Hall Invitational. Varsity Boys will race at 9:30 a.m. followed by JV Boys at 10:00 a.m., Varsity Girls at 10:45 a.m., and JV Girls at 11:30 a.m.

CPHS Softball: Sandites shut out Owasso 3-0 in district makeup game

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (20-4, 7-2) picked up a huge district win Wednesday evening at the Sandite Softball Complex, 3-0 against Owasso (19-4, 7-2) in a makeup game. The Sandites out-hit their foes ten to four and Madison Lee was a perfect four-for-four at the plate with three doubles.

Lee hit the first double in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a double from Raegan Rector. She hit another in the third as the Sandites loaded the bases, but all three runners were left stranded after Lily Shaw tossed a pair of strikeouts.

Avery Tanner smacked a double into center field in the fourth and scored on an RBI single from Olivia Alexander. Lee’s third double brought in Morgan Rector for the final run of the game.

Senior pitcher Aliyah Taff (13-4, 30-18) threw four hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts in seven innings for the win, while Shaw tossed seven hits, one walk, and five strikeouts in four innings for the loss. Avery Tallman also saw action with three hits and one walk in two innings.

The Sandites’ win improved them from fourth to third in district standings, while Owasso dropped from first to fourth. Sandite softball will return to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. with another huge district game against Shawnee (17-2, 5-1), who they previously lost to 5-0 on the road. Owasso will travel to Sapulpa (3-13, 1-8) Monday at 6:00 p.m.

CPHS Football: Sand Springs to host Shiloh Christian Friday

The Class 6A-II No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (1-1) will look to get back to a winning record Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Arkansas 4A No. 1 Shiloh Christian (2-0) from Springdale. Both teams are coming off bye weeks.

Sand Springs has a lot to prove this season - its first under Head Coach Bobby Klinck. They missed the playoffs two years in a row, suffered losing records three years in a row, and those down years resulted in a complete overhaul of the coaching staff. They got off to a great start by beating 5A No. 6 rival Sapulpa (2-1) and led 5A No. 2 Bishop Kelley (3-0) until the final minute of the game.

Shiloh Christian is coming from the other side of the success spectrum. The Saints are 28-3 over the past three seasons and their only loss last year came in the State Championship game. They own seven State Titles, most recently in 2009, while the Sandites only have one from 1966.

Shiloh is 5-2 against Oklahoma teams in the past decade, but they have yet to play anyone above a 4A classification. They beat Poteau 34-28 in their second game this year. They beat Beggs the past two years, lost to Victory Christian in 2014, split games with Broken Bow in 2012 and 2013, and beat Webster in 2011.

Saint quarterback Eli Wisdom is already receiving attention from D1 recruiters this season. In the first two games he was 21-of-35 passing for 236 yards and two touchdowns, 22-212 rushing for three touchdowns, and he had an 85-yard kick return for a touchdown. Both Auburn and Memphis have expressed interest in the sophomore.

The Sandites also have a young star under center in 6’3” junior Ty Pennington, who is 20-of-47 passing for 500 yards and three touchdowns, with another 98 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Pennington has started only eleven games in his career, and will likely surpass the 2,000 yard passing mark on Friday.

The receiving corps has been a bright spot for the Sandites, led by Jamon Sisco with eight catches for 219 yards and a touchdown, and Keaton Campbell with eight catches for 167 yards and two scores. Jacob Blevins only has two catches and has already racked up 97 yards.

The run game has been through a rough patch, losing two backs in the first two games. Blake Jones was injured in the season opener and missed week two, while Tyyee Atkison is out for the season after an injury against Bishop Kelley required surgery. Thankfully the Sandites have a dual threat quarterback, and a promising backup RB in 5’10” 190-pound sophomore Codey Cramer, who was 5-28 against Bishop Kelley.

The Sandite defense and special teams have seen remarkable improvement over last season, with 13 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble, four fumble recoveries, and three blocked kicks. Sango Whitehorn, Landon Hendricks, and Drake Fain have led the defense in tackles and Bryson Chase leads the team in pass deflections.

The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium and fans are required to wear masks. Prior to the game the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew will be grilling hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken as a fundraiser for the football team. That event kicks off outside the stadium at 6:00 p.m. and tickets are $6.00.

CPHS Softball: Sandites beat Muskogee 11-3 on Senior Night, Hawkins hits home run

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (19-4, 6-2) celebrated its seniors with an 11-3 district win over Muskogee (0-12, 0-9) Tuesday on Senior Night. The Sandites amassed 18 hits in the rout and Drew Hawkins hit her second home run of the season.

Raegan Rector scored the first runs of the game with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first, then came in on a ground out from Aliyah Taff. Avery Tanner, Drew Hawkins, and Brooklyn Harper hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, and Madison Lee hit an RBI single for the 6-0 lead before the inning came to a close with loaded bases.

Taff pitched the first two innings, but Rector came in for the third and loaded the bases with walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a single. Rector walked in two free runs on loaded bases before Taff returned to strike out the last two batters and strand three. Olivia Alexander, Lee, and Jolee McNally loaded the bases in the bottom of the evening but were all three stranded.

Muskogee nearly loaded the bases again in the fourth, but stranded two and scored none after McNally fielded a single in left field and made the throw to third for an out. The Sandites came back in for another explosive demonstration. Taff tripled to start things off, then scored on a ground out from Tanner. Hawkins hit another triple and scored on a bunt from Harper, then Alexander hit a double and scored on an error to make it 9-2.

Rector returned to the circle in the fifth inning and the Roughers loaded the bases again and walked in another free run before Taff returned to toss a couple of strikeouts. Jaden Jordan singled in the bottom of the inning and came in on Hawkins’s home run for the final scores of the game.

Taff (12-4, 29-18) threw four hits, eight strikeouts, and one walk with no runs in 6.1 innings, while Rector (1-0) tossed three hits and six walks in 0.2 innings. Katlyn Clark tossed 18 hits, two strikeouts, and one walk for the loss.

Sandite Softball will return to action Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. with a home district makeup game against Owasso (19-3, 7-1). Muskogee will play Verdigris (18-6) Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the Inola Tournament.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites beat Muskogee 3-1 on the road, Robbins scores 21 kills

The Class 6A No. 19 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (13-10, 2-4) picked up a 3-1 win Tuesday evening at Frontier Valley Conference foe Muskogee (8-9, 1-5), and both teams were shorthanded due to injuries and COVID-19. Muskogee was short six players, and Sand Springs was missing a few as well, including starters Layla Lenex and Kasidy Holland. 

Muskogee was competitive in the first and fourth set, but after a come-from-behind win in game one, they were throttled in the next two before nearly tying it up in the final bout.

The Roughers tied the first set four times before taking their first lead at 22-21. The visiting Sandites led by as much as 12-7 after a five-point streak, but Muskogee had a 6-1 run with an ace from Sophie Reynolds to tie it at 21-21. The game tied seven times from there before the home team pulled ahead. Jacelyn Smith scored a block and a kill for the 28-27 lead but Paige Irwin tied it with a tipped ball and Reynolds scored back to back kills for the win. Payton Robbins had seven kills and two aces in the set, but her team committed 16 errors. 

The Sandites got off to a great start in game two, and Smith scored three kills in a six-point run for the 12-3 lead. Muskogee responded with six-point run of their own, but Smith kept her team on track and racked up eight kills in the 25-13 win. This time they committed only six errors to Muskogee’s 12. 

Muskogee took a 6-1 lead early in the third period but Sand Springs scored a season-best 16-straight points with an ace from Smith and five kills from Robbins before Irwin broke up the run. Robbins responded with her sixth kill of the set and Teyha Johnson served an ace for the 25-11 win. 

Sand Springs turned an 8-4 deficit into a 10-8 lead with a six-point streak in game four, then Irwin served an ace to cap off a five-point run for the home team at 14-11. Muskogee began to pull further ahead and Reynolds and Mya Williams combined on a block for the 23-19 advantage, but Sophie Singleton scored back-to-back kills and Robbins had a pair of aces in a six-point run for the win.

Robbins finished the match with a season-best 21 kills along with four aces and 11 digs. Smith had her second-best match of the year with 13 kills, a block, and two aces. Johnson led in assists with 32 and Madison Blaylock had a team-best 19 digs. Irwin had a team-best 11 kills for the Roughers.

The Sandites have canceled their participation at the Glenpool Tournament this weekend and will host No. 3 Jenks (17-3, 5-0) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
