CPHS Softball: Rachael Jones hits walkoff homer for 11-1 playoff win over Sapulpa

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (21-12) got off to a good start at the Regional Playoffs Wednesday with an 11-1 run-rule victory over Sapulpa (9-19) to extend their season by a game. Rachael Jones hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to secure the walk-off win.

Jones dedicated the hit to her father, who is undergoing cancer treatment, saying “that was for you” before running the bases.

Jones also scored the first run of the game on an error in the bottom of the first and Sabrina Usher scored on an RBI single from Jaden Jordan. Makenna Skaggs scored on an error in the second for the 3-0 lead.

Sapulpa walked three Sandites in the third inning. Felicity Horn stole home and Reagan Rector hit a 2RBI single to score Skaggs and Drew Hawkins.

The Chieftains averted the shutout on the top of the fourth thanks to a walk, a double from Ally Zanca, and a sacrifice hit from Morgan DeGraffenreid to score Lexi Cahwee. They threatened again in the fifth but stranded loaded bases, and the Sandites came in for a final offensive push.

Skaggs kicked off the fifth inning onslaught with an RBI double to score Avery Tanner, then scored on an error. Rector was hit by pitch and Madison Lee reached on an error, setting up Jones for the game-winning dinger.

Mackenzie Bechtold (8-3, 12-3) got the win in the pitcher’s circle with four hits, one strikeout, and three walks. Zanca took the loss, throwing eight hits, one strikeout, and five walks.

The win positioned the Sandites for a rematch with Choctaw, who won 4-2 last night. A loss will eliminate the Sandites from contention, while a win will force a tie-breaker game at 6:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Sandites fall 4-2 to Choctaw at Regionals, play Sapulpa at noon

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (20-12) went 1-1 on the first day of their home Regional, beating Enid 19-1, but falling 4-2 to Choctaw. Choctaw won 14-1 against Sapulpa, who in turn defeated Enid 13-3 eliminate the Pacers from competition. Sand Springs and Sapulpa will play an elimination game at 12:00 p.m.

The Sandites connected on twice as many hits as Choctaw, but stranded eleven runners in the loss. Aliyah Taff (11-7, 15-13) only gave up six hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Emma Jackson got the win, throwing twelve hits, five walks, and four strikeouts.

The Sandites had already stranded four runners before the Yellowjackets ever got on base. Choctaw got on the board in the bottom of the third as Micah Edmonds singled and scored on an error, then Sabrina Usher tied it up in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to score Reagan Rector.

Erin Woods put her team back out front with a sacrifice fly to score Preslee Irwin in the bottom of the fifth. Madison Lee tied it with an RBI single to score Drew Hawkins in the sixth, but the Yellowjackets quickly got back out front as Tiffany Paul scored on an error and Kaiden Boren hit a solo home run. The Sandites loaded the bases with a trio of singles in the top of the seventh, but a Choctaw double-play brought the game to a close.

The Sandites won 19-1 against Enid (5-28) in only five innings.

Choctaw (17-12) posted thirteen hits against Sapulpa (9-18) in a 14-1 six-inning run-rule win. Jackson got the start and the win in the pitcher’s circle with four hits, five strikeouts, and two walks in four innings. Molly Emerson pitched two innings in relief and threw two strikeouts with no walks and no hits.

Sapulpa came back in consolation with a 13-3 win over Enid, outhitting the Pacers 13-5. Ally Zanca got the start and the win with three hits, six strikeouts, and seven walks in four innings. Kimbree Layton got the loss with ten hits, four strikeouts, and five walks in four innings.

The loser of Sand Springs vs. Sapulpa will be eliminated, while the winner will earn a rematch with Choctaw at 2:00 p.m. If Choctaw wins the 2:00 p.m. game they will advance to the State Tournament. If they lose, a tie-breaker game will be played at 6:00 p.m. for the ticket to State.

Sand Springs has won their past four home Regionals and had to come back through the loser’s bracket last year and in 2016. Choctaw won Regionals in 2015 and 2017 but failed to advance in 2016 and 2018. The Sandites haven’t lost to the Chieftains in over a decade. Choctaw and Sand Springs are 1-1 this season, with the Sandites winning a 2018 Broken Arrow Tournament game 3-2.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites win 3-1 thriller at Bixby to finish season 5th in FVC

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (18-13) traveled to Bixby Tuesday evening for their final match of the regular season. The Sandites won a 3-1 thriller to secure the No. 5 position in the Frontier Valley Conference.

Despite winning three sets to one, the Sandites only scored four more points than their host team overall, and two of the four sets went into extra rallies. Wichita State University-commit Sophie Childs was a perpetual pain in the Sandites’ side, scoring 24 kills with two aces and five blocks.

The Sandites took a 4-0 lead in set one with kills from McKenzie Harris and Madison Burris and an ace from Raylynn Mong. Childs scored back-to-back kills for the Spartans’ first lead at 13-12. The game tied eleven times with five lead changes. Mong took the Sandites’ second lead with an ace at 22-21, Bixby scored two, Devree Youngblood scored an ace at 24-23 and a kill at 26-25, but the final Sandite lead and the match point came on a pair of Spartan errors at 28-26.

Game two was another back and forth affair that saw fourteen tie scores and nine lead changes in the longest set of the season for either team. Thirteen total players scored in the 32-30 Sandite win. Youngblood led all of them with seven points, including the match-point kill, followed by Campfield and Jacelyn Smith with six apiece.

Game three went to the home team who won four-straight rallies to secure the 25-22 victory. Just like the prior two sets, neither team led for long and the set tied fourteen times. Abby Armstrong scored a kill to tie it at 22-22, Skyler Roth served an ace for the lead, and Childs scored back-to-back kills for the win.

The fourth and final set was a mostly Sand Springs-led foray and though the Spartans tied it four times, they didn’t take their first lead till three-straight Sandite errors made it 15-14. Burris took a 16-15 lead with a kill, Baylea Norris killed to make it 17-16, Campfield made it 18-17 with back-to-back kills, then Norris and Hallie Miller made kills for the 19-18 advantage.

It looked like the Spartans would take the match to five sets when they pushed their lead to 22-19, but they committed four consecutive errors to let the Sandites back in the game. Harris and Vanessa Wyrick combined on a block and Harris knocked down a kill for the 25-22 win.

Three Sandites recorded double-doubles and Burris had a triple-double with 10 kills, 14 assists, and 11 digs. Campfield had 14 kills and 10 digs, Mong had a team-high 18 assists and 11 digs, and Youngblood had a team-high 15 kills and a team-high 25 digs.

The Sandites finished the season with a 5-4 conference record for the second-straight year to place fifth out of ten teams. Bixby is currently sixth in the standing with one match left. If they don’t upset No. 8 Jenks on Thursday then they will finish seventh, a drop from fourth last season. Both teams will find out their Regional Playoff assignments Wednesday.

CPHS Football Preview: Sand Springs looking for payback at Bartlesville Homecoming

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-3, 1-1) will play a crucial district toss-up game Friday at No. 13 Bartlesville (0-5, 0-2). The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Lyon Field. Bruin Homecoming festivities will be held at halftime.

The 7,200-seat Custer Stadium was built in 1952 and is located at 1700 Hillcrest Drive, Bartlesville, OK 74003 on the high school campus. Parking is located on the east side of Shawnee Avenue on the visitors’ side of the stadium. General Admission tickets are $7.00 or $5.00 for students.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-70 (.481) under thirteenth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Bartlesville went 4-6 last season under first-year Head Coach Lee Blankenship, who turned over the program to former Defensive Coordinator Jason Sport shortly after the season concluded. Their last winning record and playoff appearance came in 2015. They have never won a State title.

Bartlesville has had three high schools with four names in the town’s history. Sand Springs and Central High went 3-3 before Central was split into College High and Sooner High. Sooner High School led the Sandites 6-2 before it was consolidated with College High. College High led the Sandites 10-4 before being renamed Bartlesville High School in 1982. Since Bartlesville schools were reunified they lead the series 20-15.

The Bruins rallied from a 20-7 deficit to spoil the Sandites’ homecoming last season. Sand Springs took a 13-0 lead with a 37-yard run from Joel Mackey and a 38-yard pass from Caden Pennington to Daren Hawkins. Pennington hit Hawkins again from 34-yards to make it 20-7 and were up 20-13 at the half.

Bartlesville took a 23-20 lead, Pennington hit Braden Foster from 19 yards out with 3:29 to play, then Ben Winters ran in a one-yarder for the win. Winters, who is a senior this year, was 16-22-221-0 in the game.

This Season

Sand Springs has wins of 35-0 against Putnam City (1-4) and 21-19 against Shawnee (1-4). Their losses are all to undefeated teams. 41-7 to Mansfield Summit (5-0), 50-20 to Greenwood (5-0), and 54-6 to Muskogee (5-0). The Sandites own the No. 11 offense, No. 13 defense, and No. 12 margin of victory.

The Sandites average 3 points in the first period, 6 in the second and third periods, and 4 points in the fourth. The offense averages 5.3 yards per pass attempt, 9.9 yards per completion, 3.4 yards per carry, and 4.3 yards per play. They convert on 36% of third down attempts and 57% of fourth downs. They score on 24% of possessions and 55% of red zone penetrations, and are 0-for-2 on two-point plays.

The Sandite Defense has held its foes to 7.0 yards per pass, 12.2 yards per completion, 4.3 yards per carry, and 5.6 yards per play. They have prevented scores on 58% of their opponents’ possessions and 25% of red zone penetrations. They stop 53% of third downs attempts and 67% of fourth downs. Their opponents are 1-of-3 on two-point conversions.

It has been 33 games since the Sandite defense scored a touchdown. After five games they already have four interceptions, against only two in all of last season. They are currently on track to match last season’s fumble recoveries, and are still looking for their first blocked kick.

Sand Springs has struggled with penalties on all three sides of the ball. The offense is averaging 4 penalties for 32 yards, defense is 4-54, and special teams are 2-27 for over 100 yards per game. The defense has given up thirteen first-downs this season on penalties.

The Sandites have averaged a solid 17.3 yards per kick return but have only one punt return this season for 8 yards. They have struggled in kick coverage, giving up 24.8 yards per kick return and 28.3 yards per punt return.

Bartlesville is still looking for its first win this season, but has had a few solid outings. They fell 40-28 to Claremore (2-3), 49-24 to Del City (4-1), 28-0 to Booker T. Washington (2-3), and went to overtime in a 20-17 loss to Collinsville (4-1),. Last week they went down in a 55-40 shootout with Sapulpa (4-1). They own the No. 8 offense, No. 14 defense, and No. 13 margin of victory.

CPHS Softball: Sabrina Usher hits grand slam in 19-1 playoff win over Enid

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (20-11) got off to a great start Tuesday afternoon at the Regional Playoffs with a 19-1 run-rule win over Enid (5-27). The game was their second-biggest win of the season and advanced them to the 4:00 p.m. game against the winner of Choctaw (15-12) vs. Sapulpa (8-17).

Madison Lee and Jolee McNally reached on bunt singles in the top of the first inning and Sabrina Usher was hit by pitch to load the bases, setting up Rachel Jones and Felicity Horn with RBI singles. Avery Tanner hit a 2 RBI single and Reagan Rector had a 2 RBI double for a 6-0 lead before the Pacers came in to bat. Enid scored one run on three singles in the bottom of the first, with Tiara Henry batting in Mariah Pryor. 

The second inning was fruitless for both teams, but the Sandites got hot with seven hits in the third. Tanner batted in Horn and scored on a passed ball, then Rector drove in Drew Hawkins to make it 9-1. Usher hit her twelfth home run of the season and first grand slam to score Rector, Lee, and McNally. Horn batted in Jones on a double and the Sandites ended the melee with a 14-1 lead. 

McNally hit an RBI single to score Makenna Skaggs in the top of the fourth. Jones scored on an error in the fifth, Hawkins hit an RBI single to score Horn, Skaggs hit an RBI single to score Tanner, and Hawkins scored on an error for the final run of the game.

Horn was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game and Tanner led all scorers with four RBI and three runs. The Sandites out hit their foes 18-5 and benefited from six Pacer errors. Mackenzie Bechtold (7-3, 11-3) got the win for the Sandites with five hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts in five innings.

Enid went through three pitchers in the game. Kimbree Layton got the start and the loss with eleven hits, one strikeouts, and one walk in two innings. Tomieya Stewart took over just before Usher’s grand slam and threw seven hits, two strikeouts, and one walk in two innings. Jada Stovall finished out with no hits, no walks, and two strikeouts in the fifth.

Sand Springs will play the winner of Sapulpa vs. Choctaw at 6:00 p.m. while Enid will play the loser at 4:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball Preview: Sandites to host Regional Tournament Tuesday with two rivals

The 2018 Fast Pitch Softball Team won the Sandites’ fourth-straight Regional Title.

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team wrapped up the regular season with a 19-11 record following a 2-0 loss to Oologah-Talala Thursday. They will host their fifth-straight Regional Tournament Tuesday.

Tickets are $5.00 for both students and adults. All games will be played at the Sandite Softball Complex at 408 West 55th Street on the campus of Angus Valley Elementary School.

Sand Springs will play Enid at 12:00 p.m. and Sapulpa will play Choctaw at 2:00 p.m. The losers of the first games will play at 4:00 p.m. and the winners will play at 6:00 p.m.

The Teams

Sand Springs has won sixteen Regional titles, including four consecutive trips to State. They have never won a State Title, but made it to the finals in 2015, losing by a single run. They placed second in District 3.

The team holds a .335 batting average, .480 slugging average, .401 on-base percentage, 2.41 earned run average, and 1.28 WHIP. They average 7 runs, 8 hits, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts, 1 sacrifice, 2 steals, 1 error, and 1 double play per game. The pitching crew averages 6 hits, 3 strikeouts, and 1 walk per game.

Enid (5-26) went 0-12 for last place in District 4 and they are riding a three-game losing streak. Their average score this season is a 9-3 loss. The Pacers haven’t had a winning season since 2013 and have never won a State Title. The Sandites won their last five games against the Pacers by run-rule.

Sapulpa (8-17) is Sand Springs’s chief rival in most sports, but hasn’t beaten the Sandites in softball in over a decade. They finished second to last in District 3 with a 2-10 record. They’re peaking at the right time, however, winning three of their last four games. Their average game this season is an 8-5 loss and they have never won a State Title.

Sand Springs - Choctaw Rivalry

Choctaw (15-12) finished third in District 4 and is coming off a win. They failed to qualify for State last season and average a 6-5 win this season.

The Yellowjackets are the only team at this Regional with a State Title, winning gold in 1994 and 2015. They beat the Sandites 4-3 in the 2015 finals, igniting a young rivalry between the two teams. Sand Springs is 3-2 against the Yellowjackets since then. The Sandites won 4-1 in the 2016 Broken Arrow Tournament, Choctaw won 4-3 at the 2017 UCO Tournament and 4-1 in the 2017 State Quarterfinals, and Sand Springs won 3-2 in the 2018 Broken Arrow Tournament. They have met once this season, with the Sandites winning 6-5 en route to a tournament title at Choctaw’s home tournament.
