CPHS Volleyball: Sandites remain undefeated at home, beat Booker T. Washington 3-1

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (13-8, 4-2) won its tenth home game of the season Tuesday evening against No. 17 Booker T. Washington (8-12, 1-5) to remain undefeated in the Ed Dubie Field House. Sand Springs won 3-1 in a Frontier Valley Conference match-up with sets of 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, and 25-14.

It looked like Sand Springs would run away with the first set on two different occasions, but both times the Hornets came buzzing back. Cloe Campfield and Jacelyn Smith scored kills and Campfield added an ace for a 4-1 lead that the visitors quickly negated. Then Campfield and Vanessa Wyrick scored kills in a five-point run and Wyrick combined on a block with McKenzie Harris to make it 12-7 before the Hornets rattled off five of their own to tie it again. The set tied ten times and the Hornets led by as much as 15-13, but their last advantage came at 18-17. Sand Springs held their visitors at bay in a close exchange for a 25-23 win, capped by Madison Burris’s first kill of the night. 

Game two was total Hornet domination right out of the gate, but ended in a valiant comeback attempt. Wyrick and Raylynn Mong combined on a block to start the set, then Wyrick and Campfield blocked to tie it at 3-3, but things quickly unraveled from there. Tia Gripado served three aces in a five-point run before Burris broke it up with a kill, then Ruby Vance added two more aces. Emma Pappas aced for a 16-7 lead, Burris recorded another kill, then Leia Turner and Senna Stephens hit kills for a ten-point lead. 

A Gripado kill made it 22-12 for the visitors, and most teams would have given up by that point. But Sand Springs won ten of the next thirteen rallies and only lost 25-22. Burris scored two kills, Mong scored one, and Campfield aced before Makenzie Johns killed to make it 24-17. The home team went on a five-point run from there with kills from Wyrick and Devree Youngblood and an ace from Madison Blaylock before Gripado secured the victory. 

Set three started the way of the second, with the visitors storming out to a 12-3 advantage with aces from Vance, Gripado, and Bridget Johnson. The Sandites had to play from the hole till Burris tied it at 18-18 after a 10-2 run by the home team. Burris gave her team their first lead at 20-19 with an ace, Taryn McIntosh put the visitors back up 23-21, then the two teams exchanged errors till a Campfield kill and a Hornet error ended the 27-25 Sandite victory.

Set four was a breeze for the Sandites, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead with kills from Wyrick and Youngblood and an ace from Mong. They went on a seven-point run for a 20-9 lead and led by as much as 23-10 before the Hornets won four of the final six against the Sandite second string.

Burris recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 assists, both team-highs. Youngblood and Campfield led the Sandites in digs with 21 apiece. Gripado was the top-scorer for the Hornets with 13 kills and four aces, while Vance had a match-high six aces.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at the Mustang Tournament against No. 6 Mustang (16-3), No. 16 Choctaw (8-5), and No. 20 Enid (7-9). The Hornets will host 5A No. 8 Bishop Kelley (10-7) Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Oklahoma High School Football Rankings: Class 6A-II Week Three

1. Bixby (2-0, Last week No. 1).

   • The defending 6A-2 State Champions are coming off a bye week and riding a 14-game win streak. They won their last game 57-7 against the 6A-I Runners Up from Jenks (1-2). Mason Williams was 15-17-289 passing with four touchdowns, Braylin Presley was 9-108 rushing for four touchdowns, and Brennan Presley was 4-144 with two touchdown receptions and two pick sixes.

   • The Spartans will travel to Putnam City (0-2), who they defeated 64-0 last year.

2. Stillwater (2-0, Last week No. 2).

   • The Pioneers rolled over Norman North (0-2) 55-14 in their home opener. With both offense and defense ranked in the top 3 in the division, Stillwater took a 41-0 halftime lead before easing up on the Timberwolves. Gunnar Gundy passed 15-22-295 for four touchdowns and Qwontrel Walker carried 19-173 for three scores.

   • Stillwater will travel to Southmoore (0-2) Thursday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Sabercats 49-15 last season. Southmoore is coming off a 46-7 rivalry loss to Westmoore.

3. Lawton (2-0, Last week No. 5).

   • Lawton prevailed 36-21 against their crosstown rivals from MacArthur (1-1) Friday, shutting out the Highlanders 13-0 in the second half.

   • The Wolverines will take on another rival Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Eisenhower (0-2). They beat the Eagles 42-13 last season. Ike is coming off a 50-25 loss to Choctaw.

4. Booker T. Washington (1-2, Last week No. 3).

   • The Hornets fell 17-6 to Bentonville (3-0).

   • Washington will take a bye week before traveling to Bartlesville (0-2) to start district action. They throttled the Bruins 43-6 last season.

5. Del City (1-1, Last week No. 4).

   • Del City fell 49-19 to the defending 5A State Champs from Carl Albert (2-0), despite totaling nearly 250 more yards than the Titans, due to four crippling turnovers and 118 penalty yards.

   • The Eagles will host Bartlesville (0-2) next week. They beat the Bruins 33-7 last season.

6. Muskogee (2-0, Last week No. 6).

   • The Roughers eked out a 19-12 come-from-behind road win in Midwest City (0-3). The Bombers led 12-0 after the first quarter, but were shut out after that. Ty Williams was 6-12-74 passing and 16-110 rushing for one touchdown, and Jimmie Coleman carried 21-93 for two scores.

   • Muskogee will host Putnam City West (0-2) Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their home opener. They beat the Patriots 34-29 last year.

7. Sapulpa (2-0, Last week No. 8).

   • The Chieftains doubled down on Claremore (1-1), winning 49-24 after initially falling behind 17-7. Eli Williams carried for 244 yards and four touchdowns and was 5-10-61 passing. Marcus Esparza was 18-137 with two scores. Ja Mario Jones scored on a 50-yard interception return to put the defense on the board.

   • The Chieftains will host East Central (1-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their home debut. The Cardinals are coming off a 7-0 win in Stilwell (0-2). Sapulpa won last year’s meeting 49-12.

8. Choctaw (2-0, Last week No. 9).

   • The Yellowjackets pounded Lawton Eisenhower (0-2) 50-25, leading 50-7 after the first half. Thad Williams threw five touchdowns in the dominant win.

   • Choctaw will face one of its toughest foes of the season Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host a Putnam North (2-0) team that outscored its first two opponents 118-7.

9. Midwest City (0-3, Last week No. 7).

   • The Bombers are 0-3 for the first time since 2012 after a 19-12 loss to Muskogee. Xavier Jackson was 2-6-100 with one passing TD. Bradley Langford also passed for a touchdown.

   • Midwest City will take a bye week to prepare for a district road game against Lawton (2-0). They beat the Wolverines 56-45 last year.

10. Edmond Deer Creek (1-1, Last week No. 10).

    • The Antlers got a big win under their belts to start the season, 45-14 against Southmoore (0-1), but were rolled over 49-7 by Norman (2-0). Tyler Travis was held to 17-86 rushing after a 200-yard performance against Southmoore. Elijah Allen ran in the only score.

    • Deer Creek will travel to Edmond Memorial (0-2) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Bulldogs 34-13 last year.

11. Sand Springs (1-1, Last week No. 12).

    • Ty Pennington was 13-21-184-0 with four touchdowns Friday in a 35-0 rout of Putnam City (0-2) for the Sandites’ first shutout in four years. The Sandite defense held Putnam to only 80 offensive yards.

    • Sand Springs will take on a whole different beast Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host the back-to-back Arkansas 6A State Champions from Greenwood (2-0).

12. Ponca City (2-0, Last week No. 15).

    • The Wildcats are 2-0 for the first time since 2005 after a 17-7 win over Guthrie (1-2). Sam McKinney scored two touchdowns and Spencer Ball kicked his third field goal of the season.

    • Ponca will travel to Collinsville (1-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They were shutout 28-0 by the Cardinals last year.

13. Shawnee (1-1, Last week No. 13).

    • Shawnee recovered from a 49-21 loss to Choctaw by winning 33-23 over Guthrie (1-1), then took a bye week.

    • They will host Carl Albert (2-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Titans won 47-7 last year.

14. Bartlesville (0-2, Last week No. 11).

    • The Bruins are still looking for their first win after falling 20-17 to Collinsville (1-1) in overtime. Bartlesville led 14-7 late in the fourth, but Ben Winters threw a pick-six to tie it. They gave up three fumbles and two interceptions.

    • Bartlesville will get its first big test Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Del City (1-1). They fell 33-7 to the Eagles last year.

15. Putnam City West (0-2, Last week No. 14).

    • The Patriots lost their eighth-straight game 68-7 to Putnam North (2-0) and will travel to Muskogee Friday at 7:00 p.m.

16. Putnam City (0-2, Last week No. 16).

    • The Pirates lost their thirteenth-straight game 35-0 to Sand Springs and still haven’t scored this season. Tyrece Romesberg was 3-10-30-1 passing and the offense was held to 80 yards on 49 plays.

    • Putnam will have a far tougher time when they host Bixby (2-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m., who defeated them 64-0 last year.

CPHS Football: Sandites shutout Putnam City 35-0, Pennington scores 4 touchdowns

Sophomore quarterback Ty Pennington hasn’t been named QB1 for the season yet, but he got his first varsity start Friday night against Class 6A-II No. 16 ranked Putnam City (0-2) and made a statement with a 13-21-184-0 passing performance for four touchdowns.

The Charles Page High School football team (1-1) notched its first shutout in four years, 35-0, holding the Pirates to only 80 offensive yards in their home debut at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Pennington threw touchdown passes of 17 and 25 yards to Jacob Snodgrass, 15 yards to Trey Wilkerson, and 22 yards to Jamond Cisce. Senior quarterback Braden Foster took over midway through the third period and finished 6-8-75-0 with a 41 yard score to Snodgrass. Snodgrass was the leading receiver four catches for 93 yards.

Neither team scored on their opening drives. Sand Springs marched to the Putnam 42 before Dakari Mason and James Edward combined on a sack for a turnover on downs. The Pirates then marched 37 yards for their only redzone penetration of the night before fumbling the ball away. Sand Springs drove 92 yards in 8 plays on their next drive, capped by Pennington’s 17-yard pass to Snodgrass.

Lane Webster forced a turnover on downs with a second quarter sack, setting up a 7-play 58-yard drive and 25-yard one-handed reception by Snodgrass for the 14-0 lead. The teams traded punts from there, then Brooks Dudley recovered a fumble to set up another scoring drive. This time Sand Springs needed 10 plays to march 55 yards, scoring on a 15-yard screen pass to Wilkerson. Zach Heinen’s kick made it 21-0 at the half.

Both teams turned the ball over to start the second half. Jerret Haley picked off a pass from Tyrece Romesberg and returned it 21 yards. A Wilkerson run and unsportsmanlike penalty on the Pirates queued up a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jamond Cisco with 4:07 left in the third.

Foster took over at quarterback with 3:17 left and guided the Sandites 56 yards in 7 plays, hitting Snodgrass for a 41-yard score and the final points of the game.

Both teams will have a far tougher opponent next week. Sand Springs will host Greenwood (2-0), the back-to-back defending Arkansas 6A State Champions. They are currently riding a fourteen-game win streak and have only lost three games in five seasons.

Putnam City will host Bixby (2-0), the defending 6A-II State Champions. Bixby is riding a fourteen-game win streak while the Pirates have lost their past thirteen games.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites host Putnam City Friday

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (0-1) will play its first home game of the season Friday, September 13, at 7:00 p.m. against No. 16 Putnam City (0-1). Tickets are $5.00 for students and senior citizens, and $7.00 for adults.

Prior to the game, the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew will be serving up hot dogs, burgers, and chicken sandwiches with chips and a drink for only $6.00. The event will benefit the Sandite Quarterback Club this week to help cover team meals, transportation, and other football expenses throughout the season.

Last Season

The Sandites are coming off a 3-7 season that snapped a program-best six-year streak of playoff appearances. Putnam City went 0-10 last year with the worst offense and worst defense in the division.

The two teams have met only once, last season, when Sand Springs prevailed 45-24. Caden Pennington was 9-15-169-0 passing with three touchdowns. Daren Hawkins was 3-43 receiving with two touchdowns. Joel Mackey was 13-150 rushing for one touchdown and Trey Wilkerson was 12-109 for two touchdowns. Pennington and Mackey are gone now, but Hawkins and Wilkerson will help lead the new offense.

This Year

Sand Springs currently has dueling quarterbacks in senior Braden Foster and sophomore Ty Pennington. Foster got the start against Mansfield Summit (2-0) and was 7-15-46-2 in the first half. Pennington started the second half and was 6-14-45-0 with the team’s lone touchdown. Pennington will get the start against Putnam City, but quarterback competition will continue till districts begin.

Sand Springs also has a new kicker in junior Zach Heinen. Heinen connected on his only PAT attempt against Mansfield and averaged 33 yards per punt and 45 yards per kick.

Keaton Campbell was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 38 yards and a score. Tyyee Atkison led the ground game with 10 carries for 63 yards, including a 50-yard run to set up Pennington’s TD pass. Jacob Snodgrass had a 17-yard kick return, Bryson Chase made an interception, and Jerret Haley led in tackles (10) and pass breakups (2).

Sand Springs fell 41-7 to Mansfield in Week Zero and took a bye last week, while Putnam is fresh off their 50-0 loss to Putnam City North (1-0). Putnam was shutout five times last year and averaged only 5.2 points per game last year, with their best offensive performance coming against the Sandites.

The Sandites are rebuilding on defense, but have a fiercely energetic captain in Jerret Haley. Sophomore Brooks Dudley and freshman Drake Fain also made a big impact in the season opener with six tackles apiece.

Nicolas Hancock, Ryan Johnson, Josh Fincannon anchor a talented offensive line coached by Mike Edwards and Superbowl Champion Michael Bowie.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites beat Berryhill 3-1, Burris, Mong, and Youngblood post double-doubles

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (12-8) took a five minute trip down 41st Street Thursday evening to battle the Berryhill Maidens (13-8) and walked away with a 3-1 non-conference win. The Sandites won sets of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-17, and gave up a 29-27 thriller in game two.

Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood led the Sandites with twelve kills and twelve digs, while Anna Nelson had a match-best thirteen kills for the Maidens. Raylynn Mong led the Sandites in assists with sixteen, and Cloe Campfield led in digs with thirteen. Madison Burris was one kill away from a triple double with nine kills, fourteen assists, and ten digs.

Berryhill jumped out to a huge 9-2 lead in game one, but the visitors slowly worked their way back into contention and Mackenzie Harris tied it at 13-13 before Vanessa Wyrick served back-to-back aces for the lead. Sand Springs went on a six-point run from there, with two aces from Mong, and coasted to a 25-19 victory.

Game two saw seven lead changes and twelve tie scores, with the home team holding the edge for most of the set. Burris aced to tie it at 16-16, Berryhill won five straight then Sand Springs won four straight to keep it close. Youngblood killed to tie it at 23-23 and 25-25, Burris tied it at 26-26, and Campfield tied it at 27-27 before a pair of errors gave the home team the win.

The third set was a blowout following a ten-point run from Sand Springs for a 12-3 lead that the Maidens never recovered from. A Youngblood kill iced the win. The visitors never trailed in the final game and won eight of the final eleven rallies, capped by a kill from Sophie Singleton.

Berryhill will host Verdigris (17-9) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Sand Springs will host Booker T. Washington (7-9, 1-4) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in conference action. They previously beat the Hornets 2-0 and 2-1 at the Sandite Invitational. The Sandites are 10-0 undefeated on their home court this season.

CPHS Baseball: James Garrison resigns, Matt Brown named interim Head Coach

Matt Brown has been named interim head coach for the 2019-2020 season following the unexpeCted resignation of James garrison.

Charles Page High School Head Baseball Coach James Garrison submitted his resignation on Wednesday, September 11. Pitching Coach Matt Brown was subsequently named the Interim Head Coach for the 2019-2020 season.

Garrison took the reigns of the Sandite baseball program in 2017 and amassed a 46-23 record in his two seasons, guiding the team to a Spartan/Tiger Turf War tournament title in 2018. The team had winning district records both seasons but didn’t make the State Tournament.

Brown came to Sand Springs with Garrison after Garrison was fired from Edmond Memorial. He started his coaching career at Oklahoma Christian University before joining Garrison’s staff. Brown is a graduate of Stillwater High School. He played collegiate baseball at the University of Arkansas Little Rock and at Oklahoma Christian University.
