CPHS Volleyball: Sandites beat Berryhill 3-1, Burris, Mong, and Youngblood post double-doubles
/The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (12-8) took a five minute trip down 41st Street Thursday evening to battle the Berryhill Maidens (13-8) and walked away with a 3-1 non-conference win. The Sandites won sets of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-17, and gave up a 29-27 thriller in game two.
Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood led the Sandites with twelve kills and twelve digs, while Anna Nelson had a match-best thirteen kills for the Maidens. Raylynn Mong led the Sandites in assists with sixteen, and Cloe Campfield led in digs with thirteen. Madison Burris was one kill away from a triple double with nine kills, fourteen assists, and ten digs.
Berryhill jumped out to a huge 9-2 lead in game one, but the visitors slowly worked their way back into contention and Mackenzie Harris tied it at 13-13 before Vanessa Wyrick served back-to-back aces for the lead. Sand Springs went on a six-point run from there, with two aces from Mong, and coasted to a 25-19 victory.
Game two saw seven lead changes and twelve tie scores, with the home team holding the edge for most of the set. Burris aced to tie it at 16-16, Berryhill won five straight then Sand Springs won four straight to keep it close. Youngblood killed to tie it at 23-23 and 25-25, Burris tied it at 26-26, and Campfield tied it at 27-27 before a pair of errors gave the home team the win.
The third set was a blowout following a ten-point run from Sand Springs for a 12-3 lead that the Maidens never recovered from. A Youngblood kill iced the win. The visitors never trailed in the final game and won eight of the final eleven rallies, capped by a kill from Sophie Singleton.
Berryhill will host Verdigris (17-9) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Sand Springs will host Booker T. Washington (7-9, 1-4) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in conference action. They previously beat the Hornets 2-0 and 2-1 at the Sandite Invitational. The Sandites are 10-0 undefeated on their home court this season.
