CPHS Volleyball: Sandites win eighth-straight, sweep Bartlesville 3-0

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (9-6, 2-1) picked up their eighth-straight win Tuesday evening on the road with a 3-0 sweep of Bartlesville (0-7, 0-3) in Frontier Valley Conference action. The Sandites defeated the Bruins 25-18, 25-15, and 25-14.

Bartlesville only led once in the first set after a Hannah Lindsly ace at 2-1, but Sand Springs won the next nine rallies with three kills from Madison Burris. The Bruins cut that deficit to 14-11 with a kill from Lydia Knollmeyer, but the visitors finished strong with three kills and an ace from Devree Youngblood.

Game two was very similar to the first set, with the Sandites riding a nine-point streak to a 10-3 lead. Youngblood scored six kills in that set.

Mia Otten scored the first kill of the third game, and that was the only time the Bruins led. Cloe Campfield tied it and served an ace for the lead, and the Sandites never looked back. A pair of errors tied it at 5-5, but Sand Springs won the next nine points and five of the final six rallies.

Youngblood led all scorers with fifteen kills and two aces. Raylynn Mong notched seventeen assists, and Campfield had a team-high ten digs. Brooke Bluhm led the Bruins with five kills.

Bartlesville will return to action Thursday in a non-conference bout with Edison Prep (2-4). Sand Springs will also take a break from conference play when they travel to Lincoln Christian (5-4) Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Sandites fall 9-6 to Jenks in district action

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (6-7, 2-1) dropped its first district game Monday evening, falling 9-6 to Jenks (7-3, 2-0). The teams were fairly evenly matched throughout the game, but a three-run homer in the third inning was more than the Sandites could overcome.

Jenks was first on the board with three singles and an error for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Sand Springs quickly responded. Aliyah Taff doubled, Madison Lee singled, and Jolee McNally walked to load the bases. Sabrina Usher hit a two-run single, Felicity Horn had a two-run double, and Drew Hawkins hit an RBI single for the 5-3 advantage.

The Trojans got back out front with a three-run homer. Taff doubled again and scored the Sandites’ final run on a catcher’s error in the fourth. Both teams stranded runners in the fifth, and Sand Springs stranded loaded bases in the sixth.

Jenks also loaded the side in the sixth and would have stranded them all were it not for an error in right field that allowed all three runners to score and seal the victory.

Taff (3-4, 7-10) went three-for-three at the plate, but got the loss on the mound with ten hits, three earned runs, one strikeout, and two walks.

Sandite Softball will return to action Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in a district home game against Muskogee (2-4, 2-2). The Trojans will meet the only other undefeated district team in Owasso (9-4, 3-0) Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Mackenzie Bechtold hits grand slam in 12-1 win over Claremore

Charles Page High School senior Mackenzie Bechtold didn’t have a single hit under her belt coming into the Sandites’ Thursday morning matchup with Claremore (7-4). She had an impressive slow-pitch season this spring, but in varsity fast-pitch she was 0-for-13 at the plate in her career. She blew that mark wide open.

Sand Springs (6-6) run-ruled the Zebras 12-1 in the first game of the Rogers State University Festival at the Diamond Sports Complex, and Bechtold scored two runs and five RBI in the melee, going three-for-three at the plate with a single, a double, and a grand slam.

Sabrina Usher hit the first home run of the day, scoring Aliyah Taff for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Usher, a senior, is committed to playing for Rogers State next season. Jadyn Muns scored the Zebras’ lone run in the bottom of the first, reaching on a double, and scoring on a ground ball from Emily Rogers.

The Sandites did the rest of their damage in the second inning. Bechtold hit an RBI single to score Drew Hawkins, then the Zebras got into a bases loaded situation and began hemorrhaging runs. Makenna Skaggs and Avery Tanner hit RBI singles, Bechtold scored on a passed ball, and Taff and Skaggs scored were walked in.

With an 8-1 lead, Bechtold scored the final runs of the game with a home run over the left field fence to bring in Felicity Horn, Tanner, and Hawkins.

The rest of the game was fairly uneventful. Claremore stranded singles from Paiten Reavis and Muns in the third, and from Terran Schomick and Abbey Hagen in the fourth. The game ended after fourth innings due to mercy rule.

Taff (3-3, 7-9) got the win on the mound, throwing five hits, two strikeouts, and zero walks. Alyssa Poorboy got the loss for Claremore with ten hits, three walks, and no strikeouts.

In the second game of the festival the Sandites fell 9-3 to Coweta (7-6), giving up all nine runs in the first two innings. Freshman Nataley Crawford (2-2) got the loss on the mound, throwing eight hits, two strikeouts, and one walk before being relieved.

Bechtold (1-1, 5-1) took over midway through the second with an 8-0 deficit and loaded bases. She gave up an RBI single for the final Tiger run of the game before the Skaggs and Rachel Jones caught fly balls to end the inning.

Sand Springs got four walks in the first inning, but stranded loaded bases and didn’t pick up their first hit till the third. Three walks and a single once again put the Sandites in excellent scoring position, but they were held to a single run on an RBI single from Horn.

A double from Hawkins and singles from Bechtold and Madison Lee loaded the bases for a third time in the fourth inning. Hawkins scored on a fly out from Taff, but Lauren Hammock was caught running to end the inning in a double play.

Horn scored Usher on a single in the fifth, but the game came to a close soon after.

Bechtold ended the game with three hits, three strikeouts and one walk. Tarun Robinson got the win with seven hits, four strikeouts, and eight walks.

Sand Springs will return to action Monday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. in a district battle against Jenks (6-3, 1-0) on the Trojans’ home turf.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites win inaugural tournament, 2-0 over Booker T. Washington

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (8-6) won its first tournament in nearly a decade Saturday afternoon, and they did it on their home court. The Inaugural Sandite Invitational marked the first time the Sandites have hosted their own tournament since 2014.

Sand Springs defeated McLain, Will Rogers, Tecumseh, Bishop Kelley Junior Varsity, and Booker T. Washington to secure the title.

In a preseason Q&A first-year Head Coach Derek Jackson said he wanted to see his girls defend the home court, and thus far on the season they are undefeated 8-0 in the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites swept their first four opponents 2-0 but needed three sets to down Booker T. Washington (6-4) in the semifinals. The Hornets then defeated Tecumseh (7-5) in the loser’s bracket to earn a rematch for the title, and Sand Springs swatted the Hornets down with relative ease in their second meeting.

Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood scored a team-high seven kills with three aces. Vanessa Wyrick and Raylynn Mong also scored three aces apiece, and Mong tied with Madison Burris for a team-high eight assists each.

The first set was fairly competitive early on, till Sand Springs went on a six-point run for a 15-6 lead that the Hornets never recovered from. Trailing 20-9, Washington tried to rally against the Sandite second string, but ultimately McKenzie Harris secured the 25-16 victory with a kill.

Game two wasn’t even close. After a rocky start and 4-1 deficit, the home team pulled together an eight-point run with three aces from Wyrick and three kills from Youngblood. Washington got as close as 10-8, then Sand Springs won nine more rallies in a row and ended the day on a five point run at 25-11.

The Sandites won twelve of thirteen sets in the tournament and outscored their opponents 313-184.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Bartlesville (0-4) in Frontier Valley Conference play. The Hornets will play a home conference match against Sapulpa (4-3) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hornets and Sandites will get a rematch September 17th in their conference battle.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites headed to tournament finals with 2-1 win over Booker T. Washington

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (7-6) earned their first winning record of the season and punched their ticket to the Sandite Invitational finals with a 2-1 victory over Booker T. Washington (5-3) Saturday afternoon at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Sand Springs won the first and third sets 26-24 and 15-7. They are on a six-match winning streak, and won twelve-straight sets before falling 25-22 to the Hornets in game two.

Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood led all scorers with ten kills in the best-of-three match. Raylynn Mong had a team-high sixteen assists and three aces.

Washington went on a six point run for an early 9-5 lead thanks to powerful hitting from Andrea Hernandez and Makenzie Johns. Sand Springs played from the hole for the majority of the set, but tied it at 11-11 with a block from Youngblood and Vanessa Wyrick, and at 22-22 on an error.

Mong recorded nine assists in the game, with four going to Madison Burris and four to Youngblood. Burris paced the team, but Youngblood came up clutch at the end of the set, scoring three of her kills in the final six rallies. Youngblood gave her team the 23-22 lead, Lexa Turner tied it, Youngblood responded, Tia Gripado tied it, then Youngblood scored once again. Finally, Wyrick served an ace to secure the victory..

The second set went much the same as the first, with Washington taking an early lead and Sand Springs staging a late rally. This time, however, the Hornets held strong. A four-point run with a kill and an ace from Sydney Thompson gave Washington the lead from 11-8 till 20-20 when the Sandites went on a five-point run with three kills from Youngblood. The visitors won five of the final seven rallies and Gripado hit the game winner.

Game three was a whole different story, with Sand Springs taking a commanding 5-0 lead right out of the gate thanks to three-straight aces from Mong. Emma Pappas aced to cap a three-point run for Washington, then the Sandites rattled off four more. Gripado and Hernandez tried to keep their team alive, but a 6-1 run sealed their fate after back-to-back kills from Jacelyn Smith.

The Sandites will play the winner of Booker T. Washington vs. Tecumseh (7-4) for the tournament title at approximately 3:00 p.m. They previously beat Tecumseh 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) in pool play. If the winner of the loser’s bracket beats the undefeated Sandites, a tie-breaker round will be played.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites sweep Bishop Kelley JV 2-0 in home tournament

Sand Springs is on a roll and back to a .500 record after picking up their fifth-straight win Saturday morning in the gold bracket of the Sandite Invitational. The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (6-6) won a 2-0 sweep against the Bishop Kelley Junior Varsity team with sets of 25-21 and 25-19 to remain undefeated on their home court.

Don’t let the JV tag fool you, the Bishop Kelley Red team is no slouch. The girls finished second in their pool on Friday and are the backups to a defending State Championship team.

Cloe Campfield led all scorers with six kills and three aces in the two-set match, followed by Vanessa Wyrick with five kills and two aces. Six Sandites combined for twelve aces in the match.

Sand Springs trailed only twice in the first set, riding a six-point run to a 9-4 lead and never looking back. Caroline Mosier broke up the streak with a kill and an ace, but Campfield responded with three-straight aces. The Sandites led by as much as 22-10 before putting in the second string, and the Comets quickly took advantage with an 11-3 run before a Mosier service error secured the Sandite win.

The home team trailed only twice in the second set as well, with Jessica Flusche scoring an ace for a 9-8 Comet advantage. Jacelyn Smith tied it up and Madison Blaylock aced in a five-point run that the visitors never recovered from.

Sand Springs will get a conference preview game in their next match when they take on Booker T. Washington (5-2) at 12:00 p.m. The Sandites beat Washington 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-22) when they met last year in conference action, but the Hornets are riding a four-game streak as the winners of Friday’s A Pool. The loser of that match will play at 1:00 p.m. and the winner will play at 2:00 p.m. in the Championship finals. An if-needed match will be played at 3:00 p.m.
