CPHS Volleyball: Sandites win inaugural tournament, 2-0 over Booker T. Washington

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (8-6) won its first tournament in nearly a decade Saturday afternoon, and they did it on their home court. The Inaugural Sandite Invitational marked the first time the Sandites have hosted their own tournament since 2014.

Sand Springs defeated McLain, Will Rogers, Tecumseh, Bishop Kelley Junior Varsity, and Booker T. Washington to secure the title.

In a preseason Q&A first-year Head Coach Derek Jackson said he wanted to see his girls defend the home court, and thus far on the season they are undefeated 8-0 in the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites swept their first four opponents 2-0 but needed three sets to down Booker T. Washington (6-4) in the semifinals. The Hornets then defeated Tecumseh (7-5) in the loser’s bracket to earn a rematch for the title, and Sand Springs swatted the Hornets down with relative ease in their second meeting.

Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood scored a team-high seven kills with three aces. Vanessa Wyrick and Raylynn Mong also scored three aces apiece, and Mong tied with Madison Burris for a team-high eight assists each.

The first set was fairly competitive early on, till Sand Springs went on a six-point run for a 15-6 lead that the Hornets never recovered from. Trailing 20-9, Washington tried to rally against the Sandite second string, but ultimately McKenzie Harris secured the 25-16 victory with a kill.

Game two wasn’t even close. After a rocky start and 4-1 deficit, the home team pulled together an eight-point run with three aces from Wyrick and three kills from Youngblood. Washington got as close as 10-8, then Sand Springs won nine more rallies in a row and ended the day on a five point run at 25-11.

The Sandites won twelve of thirteen sets in the tournament and outscored their opponents 313-184.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Bartlesville (0-4) in Frontier Valley Conference play. The Hornets will play a home conference match against Sapulpa (4-3) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hornets and Sandites will get a rematch September 17th in their conference battle.
