CPHS Volleyball: Sand Springs hammers McLain 25-4 and 25-4 at Sandite Invitational

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (3-6) picked up its biggest win in years Friday morning, with a 2-0 sweep of Raymond S. McLain High School (0-2) in the first round of the Sandite Invitational.

The Lady Sandites rolled past the Titans 25-4 and 25-4 in a best-of-three series in their inaugural home tournament. Senior standout Madison Burris led all scorers with ten aces and two kills in the match.

In game one the Sandites got off to an 8-0 lead with four aces from Raylynn Mong before a pair of errors let the Titans on the board. They then won twelve-straight rallies to make it 24-3, and Sophie Singleton scored the game-winning kill.

In the second set they came very near to recording a shutout, which is practically unheard of in volleyball. The girls took a 23-0 lead with twelve aces, including all ten of Burris’s, before giving up a series of errors. That match ended with a McLain service error.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites go 0-5 at brutally tough Union Tournament

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (1-6) went 0-for-5 at the Union Invitational Tournament this past weekend against a field that was so tough, the defending 6A State Champions could only finish fourth.

Victory Christian (6-1) won sets of 25-23, 25-13, and 25-8, scoring 37 kills, five blocks, and five aces. Sand Springs had the defending 4A State Champions on their heels for most of the first set, leading from 5-4 till 19-18, and tied it three times from there before the Conquerors finished with back-to-back kills.

Victory committed twelve errors in the first set, but cleaned it up from there and the Sandites had to lean entirely on their own abilities. The Conquerors took an early 5-1 lead in set two and Sand Springs never managed to catch up. In set three Victory went on a 15-1 run for a 21-5 advantage and their 6A foes were too far behind to recover.

Sand Springs played a more balanced match against a returning State Qualifier in Edmond North (5-1), falling 25-19, 25-18, and 25-11. The Huskies jumped out to a 6-3 lead in game one, but Devree Youngblood and Madison Burris pushed their team to a 7-6 advantage. The lead changed five more times from there. Burris served back-to-back aces for a 10-8 edge and Youngblood aced for a 13-11 lead, but Edmond won four straight rallies to secure the advantage for the remainder of the set.

After a 3-0 start in set two, the Sandites fell behind and never again got in front of Edmond, but hung close till a six-rally run from the Huskies at 23-13. Cloe Campfield scored two kills, Burris aced, and Sophie Singleton combined on a block with Jacelyn Smith to keep things competitive, but the Huskies eventually put it away.

Game three was a Husky railroad as they won the first nine rallies and never looked back. Senior Kamryn Bacus led all scorers with seventeen kills, one block, and four aces for the Huskies. Campfield led Sand Springs in kills with five, while Burris had four kills and three aces.

In the third Friday match the girls took on the defending 5A State Champions from Bishop Kelley (4-2) and went down 25-18, 25-18, and 25-16. The Comets recorded 29 kills to the Sandites’ 19, led by Abby Medico with ten and Audrey Buford with eight.

Sand Springs led twice in the first set, four times in the second, and only once in the third, but were competitive in all three. Campfield had a team-high five kills, followed by Wyrick and Youngblood with four apiece. Burris had six assists and Mong had five assists and three digs.

Saturday went much the way of Friday, with a pair of 3-0 losses to Union (2-6) and Stillwater (3-5). Stillwater won 25-18, 25-21, and 25-16, then Union won 25-16, 25-22, and 25-20 in the 7th place match.

CPHS Softball: Sandites win Highway 97 Rivalry 18-2 over Sapulpa

After losing five games in a row at this weekend’s Broken Arrow Tournament, the Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (5-5, 2-0) rebounded perfectly Tuesday evening with a lopsided 18-2 run-rule win over their Highway 97 rivals from Sapulpa (4-5, 1-2). The victory moved the Sandites back into first place in district standings.

Sand Springs dominated every aspect of the game, outhitting the Chieftains 15 to 5 with no errors, 6 stolen bases, and eight strikeouts from freshman pitcher Nataley Crawford (2-1).

The Chieftain pitching crew struggled, with Ally Zanca throwing ten hits, one strikeout, and nine walks in only three innings. The team also committed four errors.

Crawford took a minute to warm up, walking two in the first inning, but struck out two more to strand the runners. Sapulpa walked three of their own, but stranded the side to keep the game scoreless.

Crawford got her team on the board with an RBI single in the second, bringing in Rachel Jones, then Jolee McNally singled to score Crawford and Madison Lee. Sabrina Usher hit her fourth home run of the season for a 5-0 lead. Makenna Skaggs scored on an error, Felicity Horn scored on a sacrifice fly from Jones, Avery Tanner scored on a wild pitch, and Drew Hawkins scored on a single from Lee to make it 9-0 before the inning came to a close.

Crawford struck out the side in order to kick off the third inning, then Sand Springs quickly loaded the bases. Skaggs doubled and scored on a sacrifice from Jones, Horn and Tanner scored on an error, and Hawkins scored on a double from Crawford. Lee and McNally scored on a single from Skaggs, then Skaggs and Usher scored on a single from Horn for the 17-0 advantage.

Crawford tallied the final Sandite run on an error, and Sapulpa stranded loaded bases to avert further disaster. The Chieftains finally began to make headway in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with a single and two walks. Lexi Cahwee hit a 2RBI single to score Jessica Elliott and Kylissa Williams, but was left stranded as the game came to an early end via run-rule.

Sand Springs will return to action Thursday at 10:00 a.m. when they play Claremore (5-3) in the first round of the Rogers State University festival, followed by Coweta (4-5) at 11:30 a.m.
