CPHS Tennis: Bateman places sixth at Union, McGeehee takes eighth

Both Charles Page High School tennis teams had solid outings at last weekend’s Union tournament. The girls placed twelfth out of seventeen teams in their season debut, while the boys tied for thirteenth out of fifteen with several solid improvements over the prior week.

Logan Bateman, who placed twelfth last week, improved to sixth in No. 1 Singles with wins over Carson Thomas (Broken Arrow) and Avery Walton (Bixby). He lost to both Thomas and Walton at the Jenks tournament.

Colby Williams improved from thirteenth to twelfth in No. 2 Singles, defeating Thomas Alvarado (Enid). Aries Howard and Tanner Burgess placed fifteenth in No. 1 Doubles, defeating the team from Stillwater. Dylan Warren and Hayden Ashcroft placed fourteenth in No. 2 Doubles, winning their first match of the season against the Union JV team.

Abigail McGehee placed eighth in No. 1 Singles for the Lady Sandites, defeating Brooklyn Sanders (Stillwater). Betsy Almaraz defeated Kaitlynn Miller (Enid) for twelfth in No. 2 Singles. Rilee Buchanan and Alesha Milsap defeated Riverfield and Union JV for thirteenth place in No. 1 Doubles. Loghan Adams and Makayla Tucker placed sixteenth in No. 2 Doubles.

The boys will return to action March 29th at 8:00 a.m. in Muskogee and the girls will play there on the 30th.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites run-rule Shawnee and Memorial to start season 2-0

After a week of weather delays the Charles Page High School varsity baseball team finally got to kick off their season this weekend, and they did it with a bang.

The Sandites run-ruled Shawnee 12-1 Friday and shut out Tulsa Memorial 18-0 on Saturday.

Ben Banker (1-0, 2-0) got the win against Shawnee (0-3), pitching the entirety of the five-inning game. He threw seven hits, five strikeouts, and two walks with no earned runs. Cal Watkins, Ethan Sartin, and Cale Savage scored two runs apiece. Watkins and Ryan Seabolt batted in three each.

The Sandites only outhit the Wolves nine to seven, but benefited from a handful of Shawnee errors. They scored four runs in both the first and second innings, one in the third, and three in the fourth for a 12-0 lead before letting their visitors on the board.

Saturday was a breeze for the Sandites, who buried the Chargers under eleven runs in the second inning for an insurmountable 12-0 lead. The six runs they added in the fourth were just the icing on top of the cake.

Memorial (0-4) never stood a chance, pitching fourteen walks and committing six errors. Watkins and Brycen Peterman had two runs and two RBI apiece, and Tyler Ash scored three runs and one RBI.

Seth Villines (1-0, 2-0) got the win on the mound, pitching one strikeout, one walk, and no hits in three innings. Jaxon Skaggs threw three strikeouts, two hits, and one walk in relief.

Sand Springs baseball will return to action Monday when they travel to Bixby (4-1) at 5:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandite Season Rewind

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (21-5) racked up three trophies this season, ending the year with their fourth-straight winning record and third-straight State Tournament appearance.

Sand Springs went on an eight-game win streak before falling 59-52 to No. 12 Norman (23-7) at Tulsa Memorial High School in the State Tournament Quarterfinals. Norman went on to win the Championship.

The Lady Sandites won the Frontier Valley Conference, their third-straight Regional Championship, and their third-straight Area Championship. They were undefeated in a loaded conference that featured two additional Regional Champions, and one additional Area Champion.

The Sandites endured only five losses, all to quality opponents. They lost to Ponca, but paid it back twice. They lost to Shawnee, who made it State. They lost to Choctaw, who fell one round short of State. And they lost to the two State finalists, Norman and Norman North.

In the second game of the season, the Sandites dominated Muskogee 109-39. It was the highest-scoring performance of any 6A team all season, and was one of only two 100-point games by a 6A team all season.

They beat fourteen ranked opponents, four top-ten opponents, and two top-five opponents. They beat their rivals from Sapulpa twice, they beat the defending Conference Champs from Bartlesville twice, and they beat the defending State Champs from Owasso twice.

University of Kansas-signed senior Holly Kersgieter led the team in scoring on seventeen occasions with nine double-doubles and a career-high performance of 38 points in a 75-62 overtime victory against Jenks. She led the team in numerous statistical categories with 19.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game with a 37.8% three-point percentage and 76.1% free throw percentage.

University of Tulsa-signee Destiny Johnson led the team in ten games with one double-double. She scored a season-best 29 points in back-to-back games against Sapulpa and Owasso. She averaged 16.6 points per game and led the team with 2.8 steals and the best overall field goal percentage at 48.3%.

Northeastern State University-signed senior Isabella Regalado never led the team, but had seven double-digit performances, including a double-double against Jenks and a season-best eighteen points against Broken Arrow.

Jacie Taber, a Missouri State Softball-signee, recorded one double-double and a career-best fifteen points against Bartlesville. She led the team in two-point percentage at 54.4%.

Several underclassmen had remarkable performances over the course of the season, showing their potential in the years to come when they no longer have to share the ball with a handful of Division One talents.

Madison Burris scored a career-high fourteen points against Moore, Reagan Padilla scored a career-high fourteen against Owasso, and Darrian Jordan scored a career-high sixteen against Ponca City. The team will return a total of ten players with varsity experience, including Mikah Hampton who was the only freshman to see action this season.

Head Coach Tobey Nightingale improved her career coaching record to 30-21 in her first season as a Sandite and second year leading a varsity program.

Boys Basketball: Booker T. Washington wins 16th State Title, Phipps scores 42

The Class 6A No. 2 ranked Booker T. Washington High School boys’ basketball (26-2) claimed their first State Title since 2011 Saturday night at the Mabee Center, setting the new state record at sixteen total. They were previously tied with Millwood for most Oklahoma basketball titles.

The win also gave the Frontier Valley Conference the lead in top-classification State Titles at nineteen, surpassing the Green Country Conference.

The Hornets knocked off the defending State Champions, No. 16 Putnam City North (16-14), in their first season back in 6A. They won a 6A title in 1996, then dropped to the 5A level for their next six titles.

Trey Phipps scored 42 points, followed by Seth Hurd with 22 in the 82-70 victory. Phipps totaled 65 and Hurd had 59 over the course of the tournament.

The Hornets were a heavy favorite from the very beginning, coming off a pair of finals appearances in 5A. They had a mid-season twelve-game win streak and ended the season on a twelve-game streak as well.

Top-ranked Edmond Memorial had the longest win streak of the season at nineteen before being upset by Putnam North in the semifinals. The Panthers may have been the defending Champions, but they were a dark horse entering the post-season with a break-even record.

Edmond Memorial had the biggest win of the season at 87-17 over Capitol Hill. Midwest City had the highest-scoring game, 107-59 against Enid.

Girls Basketball: Norman wins first State Title since 2005, 44-31 against Norman North

They didn’t win their conference. They didn’t win their Region. But when it came down to it, the No. 12 ranked Norman High School girls basketball team (23-7) won the games that counted most, ending the season on a five-game streak for their fifth State Title and first since 2005. To make it extra sweet, the finals win came against their in-town rivals, No. 4 Norman North (22-7).

6’2” sophomore standout Kendra Gillispie led the Tigers with double-doubles in all three games of the tournament. She recorded 59 points and 37 rebounds in the three-round Championship.

The game marked the first State Title for the Central Oklahoma conference since 2015, and the first 6A title since 2012. The conference holds 23 titles overall and sixteen in the top classification. Frontier Valley continues to lead the top-class race with eighteen titles.

The final season rankings proved that polls don’t matter and only thing that counts is a team’s desire to win.

Only four of the top eight-ranked teams advanced to the State Tournament, and three of those four were knocked off in the quarterfinals. Three out of four semifinal teams weren’t even ranked in the top-ten, let alone the top-four.

Top-ranked Putnam West and No. 2 Shawnee tied for the longest win-streak of the season with 22-straight victories apiece. Jenks had the biggest win of the season, 94-11 over Daniel Webster. Sand Springs had the highest-scoring game, 109-39 over Muskogee.

CPHS Basketball: Class of 2019 leaves legacy of Sandite greatness

They never brought home State gold, but the seniors on the 2018-2019 Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team left their mark on the program and will be remembered for years to come.

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Lady Sandites (21-5) ended the season in a 59-52 loss to No. 12 Norman (21-7) Thursday afternoon at Memorial Veterans Arena in the OSSAA State Quarterfinals. Thus ended the high school careers of six athletes who will go down as one of the best units in school history.

Destiny Johnson will continue her career at the University of Tulsa, Holly Kersgieter will play for the University of Kansas, and Isabella Regalado will play at Northeastern State University. Jacie Taber will also play college ball, but for the Missouri State softball team. Ashlee Bunch and Daniela Solis are also seniors.

The Class of 2019 went 80-24 overall, 45-11 in conference, 12-5 in the playoffs, and 28-5 on their home court. They won two Frontier Valley Conference titles, three Regional titles, and three Area titles, and had two undefeated seasons in the Ed Dubie Field House. They also won the Interstate Classic twice and the Bishop Kelley Invitational thrice.

They may not have brought home the school’s second gold ball, but when they stepped on the court as freshmen, they inherited a program that had gone 25-68 in the four years prior, and they turned it into a powerhouse with an expectation of success.

Kersgieter recorded fourteen double-doubles in her career, leading her team on 42 occasions, and scoring a career-high 38 points senior year against Jenks. Her numerous accolades include Bishop Kelly Invitational MVP and FVC Defensive Player of the Year.

Johnson recorded four double-doubles, leading her team on 31 occasions, and scoring a career-high 31 points junior year against Ponca City. She was the FVC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and made the Bishop Kelley All-Tournament team.

Regalado recorded one double-double with six team-highs and a career-high 23 points junior year against Jenks. She was named to the Insterstate Classic All-Tournament team as a sophomore.

Taber had one double-double and scored a career-high fifteen points senior year against Bartlesville. Solis scored a career-high four points against Field Kindley as a sophomore, and Bunch scored a career-high seven against Tulsa Memorial earlier this season.
