CPHS Basketball: Chieftains spoil Sandite Senior Night 89-77, Richardson scores 16

The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team (15-7, 9-5) had their Senior Night spoiled by the Highway 97 rivalry. The Sandites were topped 89-77 by No. 14 Sapulpa (17-3, 10-2) Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, losing to their biggest foes for the first time since 2017.

The Sandites previously defeated Sapulpa 70-64 earlier this season, but the Chieftains upped their field goal accuracy by 9% and benefited from a mess of free throw opportunities to avenge the loss.

The two teams combined for fifty personal fouls and seventy free throw attempts. The Chieftains won that battle as well, shooting 75% to the Sandites’ 62%.

Both teams had ten players apiece in the scorebook. Four Sandites posted double digits and five Chieftains. Sapulpa’s Camryn Dennis led all scorers with nineteen points followed by Sandite junior Davon Richardson with sixteen.

For Sapulpa Julian Smith scored fifteen, Jayde Duncan had fourteen, Eli Williams had twelve, and Hunter Hoggatt added ten. For Sand Springs Marlo Fox scored thirteen, Cale Savage scored twelve and Josh Minney had eleven.

Sapulpa clinched the No. 2 spot in the conference with the win, while the Sandites settled for fourth for the second year in a row.

The two teams traded the lead nine times in the first period but the Chieftains went on a ten point run in the second and never looked back. Duncan spurred the drive with three consecutive three-pointers. The first came at the end of the first period for a 14-13 lead.

Duncan kicked off the second with six and Dennis dunked to make it 22-13 and soon after Sapulpa went on a run to make it 32-17. Cole Durkee scored through a foul to break the streak, Savage sank a three, and Fox hit a free throw to briefly get back within single digits and by the end of the half they were only down 39-31.

Sapulpa put the game completely out reach in the third, taking a 66-47 lead into the final period and still led 84-60 with three minutes to play. Both teams sent in the second string from there and the Sandites went on a nine-point run to get the game back under twenty.

Both teams will host their own Regional tournaments next week, but Sapulpa still has one regular season game left. The Sandites will play Enid (6-15) Friday at 8:00 p.m. while the Chieftains will travel to Bartlesville (10-12, 4-9) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites finish season undefeated in conference, beat Sapulpa 50-46

University of Tulsa-committed senior Destiny Johnson scored a season-high 29 points Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, leading Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School (18-4, 14-0) to a 50-46 win over their Highway 97 rivals on Senior Night. The Sandites snapped a six-game winning streak from No. 18 Sapulpa (13-7, 9-3) to finish the season undefeated in the Frontier Valley Conference.

The Chieftains won the tip off and Taylor Dement was first on the board with a three, but the Sandites rattled off four from the charity stripe and Johnson hit a layup for the 6-3 lead before Dement broke up the run with a free throw. Ray Osborn tied it up but Johnson laid up for the lead and Holly Kersgieter hit a pair of free throws to win the period 10-6.

Johnson hit two more layups early in the second but a three pointer from Temire Poindexter and a steal and score from Dement tied it at 14-14. Johnson stayed hot and closed the half on a six point run, scoring all ten of the Sandites’ second quarter points for a 20-14 lead.

Kersgieter kicked off the second half with a three-point play but the Chieftains soon began to battle back. De’Asia Thomas put up six and Dement tied it twice with free throws, at 26-26 and 32-32. Johnson reclaimed the lead both times, taking a 34-32 advantage into the fourth after driving the length of the court to score in under five seconds.

Dement tied it again to start the final stanza, Johnson retaliated, Osborn tied it, then Madison Burris hit a three and Darrian Jordan laid up twice to make it 43-36. Dement broke up the run with a three, Isabella Regalado scored a three of her own, then Thomas and Osborn scored back to back to cut it to 46-43. Jordan added two more and Kersgieter hit a pair from the stripe for a 50-43 lead and that was all they needed. Osborn scored a free throw and a last second two, but the Sandites held on for the win.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Thursday at 8:00 p.m. when they host Owasso (6-16) in the first round of the Regional Tournament.
