CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites finish season undefeated in conference, beat Sapulpa 50-46

University of Tulsa-committed senior Destiny Johnson scored a season-high 29 points Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, leading Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School (18-4, 14-0) to a 50-46 win over their Highway 97 rivals on Senior Night. The Sandites snapped a six-game winning streak from No. 18 Sapulpa (13-7, 9-3) to finish the season undefeated in the Frontier Valley Conference.

The Chieftains won the tip off and Taylor Dement was first on the board with a three, but the Sandites rattled off four from the charity stripe and Johnson hit a layup for the 6-3 lead before Dement broke up the run with a free throw. Ray Osborn tied it up but Johnson laid up for the lead and Holly Kersgieter hit a pair of free throws to win the period 10-6.

Johnson hit two more layups early in the second but a three pointer from Temire Poindexter and a steal and score from Dement tied it at 14-14. Johnson stayed hot and closed the half on a six point run, scoring all ten of the Sandites’ second quarter points for a 20-14 lead.

Kersgieter kicked off the second half with a three-point play but the Chieftains soon began to battle back. De’Asia Thomas put up six and Dement tied it twice with free throws, at 26-26 and 32-32. Johnson reclaimed the lead both times, taking a 34-32 advantage into the fourth after driving the length of the court to score in under five seconds.

Dement tied it again to start the final stanza, Johnson retaliated, Osborn tied it, then Madison Burris hit a three and Darrian Jordan laid up twice to make it 43-36. Dement broke up the run with a three, Isabella Regalado scored a three of her own, then Thomas and Osborn scored back to back to cut it to 46-43. Jordan added two more and Kersgieter hit a pair from the stripe for a 50-43 lead and that was all they needed. Osborn scored a free throw and a last second two, but the Sandites held on for the win.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Thursday at 8:00 p.m. when they host Owasso (6-16) in the first round of the Regional Tournament.
