CPHS Wrestling: Freshmen Kaden Glass and Blake Jones win Junior High State Championship

The Sand Springs Team Big wrestling club sent fourteen wrestlers to the Junior High Allstate Wrestling tournament in Oklahoma City last weekend and crowned two State Champions and one runner-up at the event. Freshmen standouts Blake Jones and Kaden Glass each won titles

The Allstate tournament has two age divisions: Sixth/Seventh Grade and Eighth/Ninth Grade, and a girls’ division for 8th/9th. Unlike the High School State Tournament, there are no divisions based on school size, guaranteeing that the best wrestlers at every weight class meet in the finals. The team points for the three age divisions are also combined.

Choctaw won the team title with 146 points over Bixby’s Roller Academy of Wrestling at 132. Tuttle placed third, and Stillwater came in fourth. Sand Springs placed ninth with 54 points in a field of over 130 teams.

Jones won the Junior High State title at 133 pounds with four first-period falls and a pair of close decisions. He pinned Roman Rowland in 1:39, Davaun Jones in 0:47, Jonah Stephenson in 1:03, and Jesse Boyd in 1:22. In the semifinals he scored a 4-2 decision over Bartlesville’s Duke McGill, and in the finals he defeated Tuttle’s Jack Golowenski 5-3. He outscored his opponents 30-5 and only gave up one takedown.

Glass won the Junior High State Title at 200 pounds with six first-period falls and a 3-2 decision against Piedmont’s James Maguire. He took down Blake Rice in 0:37, Brady Neasby in 0:44, Brock Estes in 0:25, Adley Bufford in 0:49, Connor Columbus in 0:29, and Kaylon Wolf in 1:41 in the finals. In his seven matches he averaged only 92 seconds on the mat.

Both Glass and Jones are members of the varsity team at Charles Page High School, which is ranked fifth in Class 6A and headed to the Dual State Championship in Shawnee on Friday. Jones holds a 19-10 varsity record, while Glass holds the second-best record on the team at 25-8 and has the second-most falls on the team at eighteen.

Mason Harris came in Runner-Up in the 6th/7th Grade Heavyweight bracket. He pinned Charlie Venegas in eleven seconds, then defeated Jonah Marshall 2-1, Joe Davis 5-1, and Lane Gourley 7-0 before falling to Sperry’s Gunner Wilson in the finals.

Ethan White placed fifth at Junior High 138 with a 7-2 record. He pinned Cameron Clark in 0:45 and Daigen Gibbens in 0:37 and won five decisions. He defeated Gatlin Wilson 5-1, Ayden Matanane 4-3, Logan Sterling 3-0, and Bobby Felts 9-6. He was defeated 9-7 by Isaiah Davis and 7-2 by Chance Cobb, but got a payback win over Daivs 7-0 in the placement round.

Cameron White placed fifth at 110 pounds in the 6th/7th Grade division with a 7-2 record. He pinned Teyton Chandler in 3:20, Colby Wilder in 2:56, Jayden Fuston in 2:37, Mason Buzbee in 0:32, Fernando Dominguez in 2:22, and Teyton Chandler in 1:55 in the placement match. His only losses were a fall to eventual Champion Layton Schneider and a 4-2 decision to Kody Routledge, who placed third.

Carter Goodman went 4-2 at Junior High 123 with three falls. He pinned Riley Cole in 0:26, Kolton McAnally in 1:22, and Diego Ortiz in 1:13, and won a 4-0 decision against Kaysen Ybarra. His only losses were 8-0 to Southmoore’s Runner-Up Landon Valenzuela and 2-0 to Ponca City’s Caden Kelley.

Malachi Wilson went 3-2 at 161 pounds in the 6th/7th Grade division. He pinned Koby Wesley in 1:27, Carlos Ramirez in 1:18, and Kizer Kilpatrick in 1:59.

Chase White went 3-2 at Junior High 143. He decision Wyland Hargrove 7-4, majored Greyson Arnold 8-0, and pinned Eli Hammer in 2:25.

Jaxon Trotter went 3-2 at 6th/7th Grade 105. He pinned Braden DeLeon in 1:03 and Ezekiel Foster in 1:25, and won a 5-2 sudden victory decision against Matthew Revas.

Mitchell Smith went 2-2 at Junior High 94. He pinned Brandon Lamar in 1:24 and defeated Tanner Winesburg 6-1. Shane Wolf went 1-2 and pinned Keenan Simpson in 1:03.

Sammy Naugle went 2-2 at Junior High 101, pinning Eli Stevens in 1:12 and Hunter Wienke in 0:31.

Ethan Norton went 2-2 at Junior High 113, with both of his wins coming by 7-6 decision. He defeated Colton Weaver in regulation and Chase Massie in an overtime tie-breaker.

Colton Luker went 1-2 at Junior High 108, pinning Mason McPherson in eighteen seconds.

CPHS Wrestling: Brendon Wiseley wins Glenpool Warrior Tournament

The Charles Page High School wrestling team sent a mixed roster of varsity and junior varsity athletes to the Glenpool Warrior Tournament this weekend and crowned one champion in 106-pound junior Brendon Wiseley.

Wiseley (29-11, 43-19) earned his first tournament title of the season by pinning the top-ranked wrestler in the 106-pound weight class, Broken Arrow junior Bryce Cockrell in 2:55. He also pinned Zavrion Caldwell in 0:31 and State Qualifier Jose Becerril in 2:44, and won a 6-2 decision against No. 3 ranked Jared Campbell.

Christian Forbes (25-9) placed fifth at 106, losing 3-1 to Cockrell and 4-2 to Junior High State Champion Guy Clevenger. He won an 18-2 technical fall against Hayden Fenley, pinned Christian Patrick-Leal in 1:20, decisioned Becerril 8-3, and majored State Qualifier Kyle Bowman 11-3.

Riley Magee (15-14, 20-19) placed fifth at 182, pinning State Qualifier Antoine Thomas in 5:43 and defeating Braxton Kearns 5-2. He was pinned by State Qualifier Taylor Fleming and Kohner Gallagher and received a forfeit in the placement round.

Braden Dahl (9-12, 10-15) failed to place at 160 but pinned Tyler Lofton in 1:19.

The Sandites only sent eight wrestlers to the event and voided eight weight classes, but still earned 44 points for twelfth place out of 28 teams. Nationally ranked No. 17 Broken Arrow won the tournament with nine finalists, six champions, and 274 team points. 5A No. 2 Skiatook came in runner-up with 190.5 points, six finalists, and one champion.

The fifth-ranked Sandites (13-4) will return to action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against No. 15 Bixby (3-5) before traveling to Shawnee Friday for the first round of Dual State.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 41-33 to No. 3 Booker T. Washington, Richardson scores 18

The Charles Page High School boys basketball team got to play on the biggest stage of their careers thus far Saturday evening, at the 4th Annual High School Hoops Showcase at Tulsa’s BOK Center.

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Sandites (14-5, 8-3) took on No. 3 Booker T. Washington (16-2, 9-1) in a battle for the top spot in the Frontier Valley Conference Standings and held tight till the very end before falling 41-33 in the lowest-scoring game of the season for both teams.

The Hornets missed their six field goal attempts before Trey Phipps gave his team the lead on a reverse layup. Davon Richardson scored the opening two baskets for Sand Springs and assisted Josh Minney with a three-point play for the 7-4 advantage. Richardson hit another basket before Seth Hurd made his way onto the board for the Hornets. Phipps hit the first three of the night to tie it at 9-9 in the final seconds of the first period.

Sand Springs didn’t score a single field goal in the second period, but did work at the charity stripe and only trailed 17-15 after the lowest-scoring half of the season.

Phipps and Michael McHenry hit threes for the Hornets early in the third period, but Richardson got hot with five-straight to tie it at 20-20 and scored the first seven points of the half for Sand Springs. McHenry hit three threes in the third, but Minney scored back-to-back layups to tie it at 26-26 and Fox had the final basket of the period to make it 29-28.

Richardson tied it with a free throw to start the fourth but Phipps scored five and Seth Hurd had two in the Hornets’ longest run of the night before Fox broke it up. Sand Springs entered the final two minutes trailing 38-33 and the Hornets didn’t surrender another point.

Richardson led the Sandites with eighteen points and eleven rebounds for his seventh career double-double. Phipps had the game-high with twenty points.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday on the road at No. 18 Bartlesville (8-10, 2-7) who they previously defeated 64-42 in December. The Hornets will travel to No. 16 Owasso (13-6, 6-4) on Tuesday.

CPHS Football: Caden Pennington commits to Northeastern State University

Charles Page High School senior quarterback Caden Pennington recently announced his intentions to play collegiate football at Northeastern State University. Pennington was a two-year starter on the varsity team, leading the Sandites to an 8-13 record and one playoff appearance.

Pennington played one game as a freshman and made five appearances as a sophomore, all in relief of Hunter Greathouse. He earned the starting spot in 2017.

As a junior Pennington was 49-111-596-7 passing with five touchdowns, and 76-162 rushing with one score. His best performances were 6-12-145-1 with one touchdown against Putnam City West, and 9-21-151-0 with three touchdowns against Muskogee.

This past season Pennington became one of the best dual-threat QBs in the division with an 86-152-1168-6 passing performance and 149-729 running game. He scored fourteen touchdowns by air and thirteen on his feet.

Pennington put up triple-digit offensive performances in every game and scored in nine out of ten outings. His career-best passing performance was against Mansfield Summit when he threw 14-20-196-0 with two touchdowns. He also threw three touchdown passes against both Putnam City and Bartlesville.

His career-best performance came against Sapulpa when he scored seven total touchdowns. He was 8-9-123-0 passing for one score and 28-212 rushing for six touchdowns. He threw a career-long pass of sixty yards against Muskogee and had a career-long run of 61 yards against Sapulpa.

Altogether, Pennington was 138-268-1768-14 passing with nineteen career touchdowns, and 231-736 rushing with fourteen touchdowns and three two-point conversions, scoring 204 total points. He also had six punts for an average of 37 yards.

Northeastern State is an NCAA Division II program competing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The team holds twenty-one conference championships and has made four NAIA Championship appearances with two national titles, most recently in 1994.

The RiverHawks went 0-11 last season and haven’t had a winning season since 2011. J.J. Eckert will be taking over the program in 2019, following a twelve-year stent at Kilgore College in Texas. Eckert amassed a 72-53 record with the Rangers, including three Southwest Junior College Football Conference Championships, two NJCAA Region 14 Championships, and five bowl game appearances. He is an NSU-alumni and quarterbacked the RiverHawks to NAIA title games in 1994 and 1995.

Sand Springs has sent several student athletes to the Northeastern State football program in recent years.

• Isaiah Silversmith played nineteen games at NSU from 2015-2017, recording 29 tackles and one tackle for loss.

• Terrance Dixon played 26 games from 2012-2014. He carried 219 times for 678 yards and eleven touchdowns, and had 48 receptions for 445 yards and a score. He also had two kick returns for 21 yards apiece.

• Johnny Deaton quarterbacked the RiverHawks for ten games in 2012. He passed 152-318-1861-12 for ten touchdowns and carried 38 times for 115 yards and two scores.

• Spencer Haff played tight end for NSU in 2013.

• Shane Devers played three games in 2012, recording two receptions for fifteen yards and one tackle.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites thump Broken Arrow 65-52, Richardson scores 25

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (14-4, 8-2) trailed Broken Arrow 14-12 after the first quarter Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, but shut down their opponents 18-2 in the second period and never looked back in the Frontier Valley Conference victory. Sand Springs prevailed 65-52 over the Tigers (7-11, 3-7).

Junior standout Davon Richardson led the Sandites with his sixth career double-double, posting 25 points and eleven rebounds. Senior Marlo Fox was second with a career-high seventeen points. Ryan Arthur led Broken Arrow with fourteen points and George McGurdy added ten.

Broken Arrow was first on the board with a layup from Simon Blair, but Fox drained a three and scored on a steal for the 5-2 lead. The game tied three times in the first period. Arthur hit a three to make it 5-5, Richardson gave his team the lead once and tied it once, but the Tigers went on a five point run before Cale Savage hit a three to end the period 14-12.

Fox hit another three to take the lead with the first score of the second period, and that was the only basket in the first four minutes of the quarter. Richardson ended the offensive dry spell with a reverse layup, and Fox made a three-point play on a steal for a 20-14 lead. McGurdy hit two from the charity stripe but Fox and Richardson scored on a pair of turnovers and Richardson made a three-point play for the double-digit lead. Cole Durkee made his way onto the board with a three and the home team held a 30-16 advantage at the half.

Fox led all scorers in the first half with thirteen points, followed by Richardson with eleven.

Broken Arrow won the third quarter 13-11 thanks to a late three from McGurdy, and entered the fourth trailing 41-29. They began chipping away at the deficit and got back within ten after a layup from Anthony Allen, but Richardson made a pair of three-point plays to stay out front at 52-38.

The Tigers cut it back to a ten-point gap with 2:31 remaining after Fox fouled out and sent Cody Nagy to the line for a pair of free throws. Jaeden Hurd and McGurdy traded layups but Durkee got the final basket of the night at 65-52.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against No. 3 Booker T. Washington (15-2, 8-1) at the High School Hoops Showcase at Tulsa’s BOK Center. The Hornets currently lead the conference, but Sand Springs will take first with a win. Broken Arrow will travel to No. 11 Union (8-2) on Tuesday.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites beat Broken Arrow 69-55, Kersgieter scores 26

The Class 6A No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (15-4, 11-0) had to play tough for all four quarters and never pulled substantially away from their Friday night guests, but never trailed after the first quarter and overcame Broken Arrow (8-11, 2-8) 69-55 to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action.

University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter played one of her best games of the season for her eleventh career double-double. The senior led all players with 26 points and eighteen rebounds, followed by University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson with fourteen points and Northeastern State University-commit Isabella Regalado with ten. Kiersten Hines was the only visitor in double-digits, leading her team with twelve.

The Tigers led only briefly in the first period, both times after three-pointers from Hines. Madison Burris tied it at 5-5 and Johnson gave her team the lead for the remainder of the night with back-to-back layups. The Sandites went on a ten-point run for a 15-8 advantage before Makayla Adams broke it up with a three-point play. Regalado retaliated with back-to-back threes for a double-digit lead.

Sand Springs took a 23-17 lead into the second period, then started playing some of their most aggressive defense of the season. The Tigers still found ways to score, however, and hung tight until the home team went on a six point run to close the half 38-26.

Nine Lady Sandites saw action in the first half, including senior Jacie Taber, who has been out with a hamstring injury for the past five games. Sophomore Reagan Padilla got her fifth start of the season in Taber’s stead. Seven players made their way into the scorebook, led by Kersgieter with ten points and six rebounds.

Adams made the first basket of the second half on a reverse layup, Sand Springs went on a six-point run, then Hines sank a three and Kamaya Cowan laid up to make it 44-33. Padilla took a steal coast to coast for two and Kersgieter added a pair of layups for a seventeen point lead.

The Tigers battled back and trailed 52-39 to start the fourth. Sand Springs scored five for their biggest lead of the night, but their visitors continued to chip steadily away and were down by only ten as they entered the final two minutes.

Sand Springs outperformed Broken Arrow in every single statistical category in the fourteen-point victory.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against No. 6 Bartlesville (14-3, 6-2), who they previously defeated 66-48 in December. Broken Arrow will travel to No. 12 Union (14-5, 8-2) who they lost 45-39 to in December.
