CPHS Basketball: Sandites brutalize Ponca City 84-44, Fox scores 15

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team improved to 11-2 on the season with their second-straight forty-point victory Saturday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House. The Sandite juggernaut overcame a slow start and powered forward for an 84-44 win over Ponca City.

The Sandites were commanding in the first quarter, jumping out to a 14-3 advantage, but Ponca rattled off thirteen straight and took their first lead at 20-18 with a steal and layup from Justin Thompson. Cale Savage and Travaughn Tupton traded three-pointers and Marlo Fox hit a pair of free throws to tie it at 23-23.

Anthony Gazaway put the visitors back out front one last time, but Jaden Hurd kicked off a 22-point run and Coke Durkee sank a buzzer beater to close the half at 40-23. The streak was aided by a pair of technical fouls and the ejection of second-year Ponca Head Coach Keenan Curry. Davon Richardson scored ten points in the first half alone.

Sand Springs pushed their lead to 57-35 by the end of the third, riding another impressive run of fifteen points into the fourth quarter. Tupton scored on a steal, but Fox responded, Quier driller a three, and Daren Hawkins scored on another steal to make it 73-37. Kason Hughes scored on back to back possessions from both two and three point range, then Hawkins hit back-to-back layups from there.

Fox scored a career-high fifteen points and led his team for the first time. Richardson finished with fourteen, Minney scored twelve, and Cale Savage added ten to put four players in double digits. All ten Sandites who played made their way into the scorebook.

The game was the Sandites’ second-straight forty-point win and their second straight 84-point performance. They also had their best field goal percentage of the season at 66%.

Sand Springs will put its undefeated 5-0 Conference record on the line Tuesday when they travel to No. 3 Sapulpa (7-1, 3-0) in the Chieftains’ first game of the new year. Tip off will follow the girls’ varsity game at approximately 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Boys hammer Bixby 84-43, Savage scores 22

A fourteen-point streak in the first quarter and a 22-point performance from Cale Savage led to a dominant 84-43 victory for the Sand Springs Sandites Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (10-2, 5-0) rolled over Bixby (1-5, 0-4) to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action with their second-biggest win of the season.

Braden Weaver was first on the board, but Savage hit a three to tie it and Davon Richardson dunked for the lead. The Sandites had their best first half lead of the season at 46-24 and their second highest-scoring period of the season with 26 points in the second.

CPHS Basketball: Girls throttle Bixby 58-35, improve to 5-0 in conference play

From the final score, you wouldn’t think the No. 8 ranked Lady Sandites had a rough start to the night, but Charles Page High School girls played three quarters of excellent basketball for a 58-35 victory over No. 18 Bixby (6-4, 2-2) Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. The girls improved to a 7-2 record overall and are undefeated at 5-0 in conference play.

The Sandites trailed 6-5 late in the first quarter, but finished it 11-8 and improved in every subsequent period. By halftime they were up 27-15 and in the third period they held their foes to only four points, their best period of the season defensively.

Destiny Johnson scored back to back threes for a 20-11 lead early in the second, then Reagan Padilla hit a three to push the advantage to double digits. Darrian Jordan and Holly Kersgieter scored back to back to take a 27-15 lead to the locker room.

Kersgieter put back a three-point attempt from Isabella Regalado to kick off the second half, then Johnson scored on a steal. Kersgieter drained a three, sent an assist to Johnson, then Regalado scored a two to make it 38-15. Sydnee Shovanec broke up the fifteen point run, but the Sandites went on a six point run before Dariann Myles closed out the period at 44-19.

The Spartans won the fourth against the Sand Springs backups. Kersgieter made a three-point play, Regalado hit two from the stripe, then Burris drained a three to make it 52-19 before Coach Tobey Nightingale pulled her starters. The Spartans went on an eleven point run to even things out. Daniella Solis made a three point play and Ashlee Bunch hit a three in the final minutes.

The 23-point victory was the Sandites’ fourth-largest win of the season and it came with their highest shooting percentages of the season as well. Kersgieter, a Kansas-commit, led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds, followed by Johnson with thirteen points.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Saturday at home at 5:00 p.m. against No. 11 Ponca City (4-2). The Wildcats upset the top-ranked Sandites 74-62 in the season-opener.

NCAA Wrestling: Undefeated freshman Daton Fix wins Southern Scuffle, Cowboys place 2nd

Charles Page High School alumnus Daton Fix improved his collegiate record to 22-0 Saturday evening in Chattanooga as one of four Oklahoma State University wrestlers to win the Sixteenth Annual Southern Scuffle.

The No. 3 ranked Cowboys finished in second place with 188.5 points, behind No. 1 Penn State (216.5) who had six champions, eight finalists, and three consolation champions. Oklahoma State put five in the finals.

Fix outscored his five opponents 92-21 at 133 pounds, giving up nothing but escape points. He scored a 19-3 technical fall against Rider freshman Chris Wright in 5:57 with five takedowns and eight nearfall points, then recorded his first collegiate pin against Air Force senior John Twomey. He scored four takedowns and four nearfall points before sticking his foe in 5:28.

In the quarterfinals Fix teched NC State freshman Jarrett Trombley, a four-time Michigan State Champion, 25-10 with twelve takedowns in 6:47. Fix took on Cal State Bakersfield senior Sean Nickell, who is ranked twentieth in the nation by InterMat Wrestling, in the semis. The Cowboy scored four takedowns, a reversal, and eight nearfall points for the 18-3 victory in only 3:58.

In the finals Fix met No. 9 ranked Iowa State freshman Austin Gomez, a three-time Illinois State Champion. Fix dealt Gomez (18-1) his first collegiate loss with a 6-3 decision, scoring takedowns in the first and third periods with a second-period escape.

Saturday was the Cowboys’ second-best performance in tournament history, trailing only a 198-point team title in 2017. They have come in runner-up four times. Nicki Piccininni, Kaden Gfeller, and Derek White also won titles for the Pokes.

Oklahoma State (5-0, 4-0) will return to action with a four-dual road stretch, beginning on the 12th at No. 27 Princeton (3-3). They will travel to No. 25 Rutgers (6-1) on the thirteenth, West Virginia (2-7, 2-1) on the eighteenth, and No. 24 Pittsburgh (4-0) on the nineteenth.
