CPHS Wrestling: Sandites hammer No. 10 Owasso 53-21 in season opener

Not even two full years removed from a Dual State title, the Charles Page High School wrestling team started their season ranked only eighth in Class 6A. Thursday night they put the pollsters on notice that they should probably be a little higher.

The Sandites rolled to a dominant 53-21 win over No. 10 Owasso (0-2) with six pins, one technical fall, and two decisions. The host team won only four matches in the lopsided dual, though three of those came by fall.

The Rams started in the hole after forfeiting 106 to Christian Forbes (1-0) but made up for it with a come from behind victory by Jared Campbell over Brendon Wiseley (0-1, 14-9). Wiseley took a 6-4 lead into the second period, but Campbell flipped him for a pin at 3:28.

Two-time State Champion Riley Weir (1-0, 92-27) easily handled EJ Tecson, taking a 10-1 first period lead, reversing in the second and securing the 18-1 technical fall at 3:54.

Seth Jones (1-0, 23-14) scored a takedown and back points late in the first period against Killian McNichol, started the second period on top, and cradled the ram in 3:09. Freshman Blake Jones (1-0) scored an immediate takedown against Jayden Miller before pinning his foe with six seconds left in the first period.

State Finalist Zeke Washington got the Rams back on track at 138, taking a 19-8 lead against Caleb Phillips (0-1, 2-8) before pinning the Sandite in 2:56. Preston Medlin (0-1) and DJ Anderson stalemated throughout the first two periods, but Anderson took the lead with an escape early in the third, then added a takedown soon after that and rode to a 3-0 decision.

Scott Patton (1-0, 36-22) scored a quick takedown against Mark Turner, gave up a second period escape, then scored again moments later. He reversed to start the final period, cut his opponent loose to look for a major, and instead it was Turner with the takedown. Never panicked, Patton reversed for back points and a 10-4 decision.

Chris Kirby (1-0, 23-10) gave up a takedown to Nate Jacobson early in the 160 match, but the Westside Strangler reversed with his signature headlock for a pin at 1:21. Dayvon Taylor (0-1, 23-21) took a 4-0 lead with back points against two-time State Qualifier Taylor Fleming but this time it was the Ram with the come-from-behind pin at 2:30.

Riley Magee (1-0, 6-5) won a 5-0 first period lead against Stephen Aycock before sticking him in 2:36.

Freshman Brooks Dudley (1-0) worked up an 8-0 lead with two sets of back points against Scott Ghavami before giving up a takedown early in the second period. He reversed quickly, but Ghavami scored once again in the second and twice in the third to cut his deficit to 11-10. The Ram scored with two seconds remaining, but Dudley held on for the one-point win.

Kaden Glass (1-0), also a freshman, made quick work of Devin Harris, winning his match by fall in 1:16.

Josh Fincannon (1-0, 15-17) wrestled up to heavyweight against Hilton Moseby and the two went scoreless through the first period. Fincannon scored an escape in the second period, then pinned Moseby in 4:36 to wrap up the night.

The Sandites, ranked fifth in tournaments, will return to action Friday at the 43rd Annual Perry Tournament of Champions. They won the tournament in 2016 and placed eighth last season with one champion in Carter Young. Young has since transferred to No. 12 Stillwater and could end up taking on one of his old teammates this weekend.

Other 6A teams traveling to Perry include No. 2 Choctaw, No. 7 Ponca City, No. 8 Edmond Memorial, and No. 10 Owasso. The host school is ranked first in class 3A and the defending 4A Kansas State Champions from Arkansas City will also be in attendance.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites hand Memorial first loss, 75-34 at Bishop Kelley Invitational

Sixteen Lady Sandites saw court time in a 41-point win at the Bishop Kelley Invitational Thursday morning. The No. 4 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (3-1) rolled over 5A No. 19 Tulsa Memorial 75-34 in the first round of the tournament, dealing the Chargers (2-1) their first loss of the season.

In what has become a normal occurrence during the past few seasons, the Sandites jumped out to a practically insurmountable first-period lead and were able to run the bench throughout the game. With a 55-13 lead to start the second half, the starters rode the bench through the entire third quarter and only saw two minutes of action in the fourth.

University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson scored nine points in a 15-0 start before Memorial made their way onto the board and University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter scored six in the stanza. Kersgieter was the leading scorer with nineteen points, sixteen of which came in the first half. Johnson was next up with eleven, all in the first half.

Ashlee Bunch was the star of the second half, scoring a career-high seven points and Mikah Hampton had five. The full roster got to play for the first time with Raylynn Mong making her season debut late in the fourth, and a season-best fourteen players made their way into the scorebook.

The Sandites had their highest-scoring second quarter of the season, and allowed only six points to tie their best defensive period of the season. They also allowed only seven points in both the first and fourth quarters. The game was their second-biggest win of the year and best defensive allowance. They improved on free-throw percentage for the fourth consecutive game, going nine-of-eleven at the charity stripe and committed a season-low seven personal fouls.

Second-year Memorial coach Audra Estrada, who lives in Sand Springs, led the Chargers to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2015 with wins over Daniel Webster and the Green Country Defenders.

The Lady Sandites are the defending Bishop Kelley Invitational Champions and have won the tournament three years straight. The win over Memorial was their second-highest margin of victory in the tournament behind a 45-point win over Cascia Hall in the 2016 quarterfinals. They haven’t won a Kelley Invitational game by less than twenty points since since the 2015 finals.

Sand Springs plays the winner of No. 11 Shawnee (2-0) vs. 5A No. 16 Claremore (1-1) Friday at 4:00 p.m. Memorial will take on the losers of that game Friday at 10:00 a.m. The finals will be played Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites handle No. 15 Broken Arrow 54-45

The No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (3-0, 2-0) continued their undefeated start to the season with a close but solid 54-45 win over No. 15 Broken Arrow in a Frontier Valley Conference matchup at Tiger Field House.

Davon Richardson led the Sandites with sixteen points, followed by Cale Savage with fourteen and Josh Minney with eleven.

The game was a close one for the first half as the Sandites trailed 12-11 after one quarter and only led 22-21 at the half. They blew it wide open in the third quarter, however, giving up only four points for a 37-25 lead that the Tigers couldn’t recover from.

Broken Arrow beat the Sandites in offensive rebounds, blocks, and steals, but Sand Springs excelled in accuracy, going 12-of-13 at the charity stripe, and beating the Tigers in the field as well.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a home game against unranked Bartlesville.

CPHS Basketball: Kersgieter and Johnson combine for 48 in 89-56 win at Broken Arrow

Sophomore Darrian Jordan has been a solid playmaker during her first varsity season.

It was a cold night in Broken Arrow but the BA High School Girls’ basketball team turned up the heat at Tiger Field House for a thrilling bout with the No. 4 ranked Charles Page Lady Sandites (3-0, 2-0). While Sand Springs ultimately prevailed by more than thirty points, their unranked conference foes (0-1, 0-1) kept them on their toes for much of the game and only trailed by five at halftime.

For the second game in a row the visitors jumped out to a double digit lead before letting their opponents on the board. Unlike their Friday night massacre of Muskogee, they gave up much of that lead in the second quarter. With a comfortable 20-6 cushion, the Lady Sandites were unprepared for a 28-19 second period resurgence that included a sixteen-point run for the home team.

The back-to-back State Qualifiers settled down in the second half and outscored the Tigers 25-11 in both of the final periods. The Sandites’ three NCAA commits were the heavy scorers. Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter posted 26 points, closely followed by Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson with 22, evenly split between the halves, and Northeastern State-bound Isabella Regalado had eighteen.

While Broken Arrow’s sixteen-point run was the longest of the night, Sand Springs had runs of fourteen in the first quarter, nine in the second quarter, nine in the third, and twelve in the fourth.

Just like the game before, the Sandites improved steadily throughout the night, didn’t slow down when they sent in the backups, and ended the night with their biggest lead of the game. Thirteen players made their way onto the court and ten made their way into the scorebook.

The Lady Sandites will return to action at the Bishop Kelley Invitational, where they are back-to-back-to-back champions. They will take on 5A No. 19 Tulsa Memorial (2-0) Thursday at 10:00 a.m.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites improve to 2-0 with 57-52 win over Muskogee

The No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team won their second game of the season and first conference game in a 57-52 barn burner against the Muskogee Roughers (0-1, 0-1) Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites struggled from three-point range, making only two baskets on eighteen attempts, but were a solid 21-of-31 inside the arc and nine of fourteen at the charity stripe. Their visitors were the complete opposite, shooting only 35% on field goals, but an impressive 12-of-28 on three pointers to keep the Sandites on their toes.

Junior standout Davon Richardson led the Sandites for the second straight game with sixteen points, closely followed by Marlo Fox, who scored thirteen for the second game in a row. They were the only two Sandites to score in double digits, though Josh Minney scored a career-high eight points with ten rebounds.

The game was a low scoring affair and the Sandites owned only a 10-9 first quarter advantage. They closed out the first half on a strong note with eight-straight points.

The Sandites’ biggest lead was ten points, achieved three times at 27-17, 33-23, and 43-33. The Roughers began to battle back late in the fourth quarter, cutting it to 55-52 with 18.8 seconds to go, but Richardson hit a pair of free throws to secure the victory.

Sand Springs Basketball will return to action Tuesday with a conference road game against No. 11 Broken Arrow (0-0).

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites throttle Muskogee 109-39 in conference opener

The Dubie was lit Friday night in Sand Springs. After an upset loss in Tuesday’s season opener, the No. 1 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (1-1,  1-0) made a statement in their first conference game with a seventy-point win against Frontier Valley foe the Muskogee Roughers (0-1) in their first home game at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Lady Sandites played an aggressive full court press that came up with four-straight turnovers and a 10-0 lead before Muskogee ever left their side of the court.

All fifteen varsity players saw game time, twelve made their way into the score book and five scored in double digits in what could be a school record offensive output. Sandite Pride’s records are incomplete, but even the historically exceptional teams from the Dustin Morrow era only broke 80 points once. The triple digit beat down couldn’t have made for a more perfect first win for first-year head coach Tobey Nightingale.

University of Tulsa commit Destiny Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, closely followed by University of Kansas commit Holly Kersgieter with eighteen, sophomore standout Darrian Jordan with sixteen, and Northeastern State University commit Isabella Regalado with fifteen. Johnson had her first double-double of the season with ten steals.

D’Asia Brown scored the Roughers’ first points on a steal, but the home team rattled off nineteen straight with three three-pointers from Madison Burris before Davin Wilson broke the run. By the end of the first period the Sandites owned a 36-8 lead.

The second period was less explosive, but only slightly. The home team won it 21-8 for a 41-point halftime lead. A two pointer from Lonnesha Hill was the only thing breaking up a thirteen-point run from Sand Springs. The Roughers even got help from the refs when they were given two free throws on a made two-point basket.

The third period was Muskogee’s best with thirteen points and they scored nine of those in a row after a seven-point start from Regalado. Sand Springs scored 26 points in both the third and fourth quarters. Sophomore Bayleigh Cheney hit two free throws to end the game with the biggest lead of the night.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday with a conference road game against Broken Arrow (0-0) before looking for their third-straight Bishop Kelley Invitational title that weekend.
