CPHS Softball: Sandites fall to Edmond North at State Tournament, but win Academic State Title

(Shawnee) - The No. 4 offense in the state was too much for the Charles Page High School softball team (23-9), though they held their own for eight innings before falling 10-5 to Edmond North (28-3). The Lady Sandites were eliminated in the first round of the OSSAA Class 6A State Tournament, but won the Academic State Title with the best cumulative GPA of any of the State-qualifying teams.

The Lady Sandites took an early lead with a 2RBI double from Cameron Clemons in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Madelyn Blair and Felicity Horn, but Emily Demarus tied it up in the top of the third with a home run.

The Huskies jumped out front in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with a double and two walks. Kaitlyn Jones scored Kamri Heath on a single and Rachel Matthews walked in before Blair caught a pair of pop flies, throwing one to second for a double play.

Drew Hawkins scored on a single from Sabrina Usher in the fifth and caught a fly ball to strand loaded bases in the sixth. The Sandites stranded loaded bases in the bottom of the sixth, but got another shot in the seventh and made the most of it. Usher drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an error to force extra innings.

The Huskies stranded a walk in the eighth but went to town in the top of the ninth with six singles, a walk, and a double for the 10-4 lead.

Usher, Blair, and Jacie Taber retaliated with three-straight singles in the bottom of the inning, and Taber scored Usher for the final run of the game before the Huskies sealed the victory with a pair of fly outs.

Taber (6-1, 35-11) picked up her first loss of the season, throwing fourteen hits, five strikeouts, and seven walks in nine innings.

Edmond North will play the winner of Yukon (22-8) vs. Broken Arrow (32-5) Friday. Deer Creek (28-3) won 6-5 over Stillwater (21-11) and Westmoore (30-5) prevailed 5-3 against Owasso (25-10) on the north side of the bracket. Both semifinal games will be played at 1:30 p.m. The Championship game will be played at 6:30 p.m. The Tournament is held at the Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites end season 7-18 with Regional loss to Broken Arrow

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (7-18) took on the Frontier Valley Conference Champions from No. 9 ranked Broken Arrow (20-13) Tuesday evening at Owasso High School.

The Lady Sandites fell in sets of 25-23, 25-11, and 25-12 in the first round of the Regional Championship to end their season.

Macy Blackburn scored the first kill for Broken Arrow, the Tigers made a service error, then scored on a kill from Mackenzie McGuire. The Sandites rattled off four straight wins from there for a 5-2 lead. Madison Blaylock made an impressive dig that the Tigers let fall undefended. Cheyenne Henry made a kill, then combined on a block with Rachel Hines.

The teams traded blows till the Tigers dug themselves into an 11-7 deficit with three-straight errors. A quick timeout to adjust and they rattled off five straight points with four kills. Devree Youngblood tied it at 12-12, Cloe Campfield tied it at 13-13, and Henry tied it at 14-14 before the Sandites put together a three point run for the 18-15 lead with a kill from Henry and a block from Henry and Youngblood.

Sand Springs stayed out front till 20-17, then the Tigers rattled off four straight. The set tied three more times before Kiana Clark and Gracie Daniels combined on a block for the 25-23 victory. Henry was the star of the game with five kills and two blocks.

Broken Arrow buried Sand Springs in an early 13-5 deficit in set two with a 10-1 run and the Sandites never recovered. Sand Springs committed ten errors with only three kills, and the Tigers cleaned up their serve game with four aces and half as many service errors in the 25-11 beat down.

Game three started as another back and forth affair. Broken Arrow started to pull ahead at 8-5, then committed four errors to give the Sandites the lead. Olivia Boss tied it at 9-9, Vanessa Wyrick killed for the lead, then the Tigers got back into their groove with eight straight rallies to knock the Sandites out of contention.

The Tigers, who went undefeated in conference action this season, were defeated 3-0 by the hosting Rams in the Regional finals. Owasso and Jenks are the lone FVC teams to advance to the State Tournament.

CPHS Cross Country: Sandite boys place 4th at Owasso, girls 9th

The Charles Page High School Cross Country teams competed at the Owasso Invitational Thursday.

The Lady Sandites placed ninth of fifteen schools in the varsity 5K, and the varsity boys took fourth of seventeen schools.

The junior varsity boys placed tenth of twelve teams, while the JV girls didn’t have a full squad.

The senior-laden varsity boys’ team placed two in the top fifteen, led by Jacob Smith with a 17:25 finish for eleventh. Aden Baughman was just a second behind him for thirteenth. Chezney Kelley was the leading Lady Sandite with a 23:20 finish for 39th place. Erika Baker and Sara Abbet also cracked the top-fifty.

The Sandites will return to action Wednesday at the Frontier Valley Conference Championship in Bartlesville. Varsity girls will kick the meet off at 4:00 p.m. at Madison Middle School at 5900 Southeast Baylor Drive.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites ride six-year win streak into Ponca City meeting

University of Central Oklahoma freshman Payton Scott ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns on only 25 carries in last year’s lopsided 42-7 victory.

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-5, 0-3) is still looking for their first district win, though at this point they’ll need to win out to make the playoffs.

The Sandites will have a good shot at snapping their four-game losing streak when they travel to a winless Ponca City (0-6, 0-3) Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Last Week

The Sandites had homecoming spoiled 29-27 by Bartlesville despite owning a 20-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Caden Pennington led the offense with a 6-13-138-1 passing performance for three touchdowns and a 13-95 run game. Daren Hawkins caught four passes for 90 yards and two scores and Braden Foster caught two throws for 48 yards and a touchdown. Joel Mackey carried 10-69 for one touchdown and Jaden Weiser was three-for-three on extra point kicks. Luke Bratcher had a forced fumble, Kaden Glass had a recovery, and Mackey blocked a PAT.

Ponca had their second-biggest offensive showing of the season, scoring twenty points against Bixby, but also gave up 57 in their worst defensive allowance.

This Season

The Sandites started strong, despite an opening week loss to a strong Texas program. They easily handled a still winless Putnam City team, but things took a downward turn from there. After an unsurprising loss to a powerhouse Arkansas team they suffered three come-from-behind losses. They have no problem scoring and no problem getting stops, but both sides of the ball have a hard time finishing.

Ponca is riding an eleven game losing streak that that Sandites kicked off last year. They’ve played a fairly tough schedule including two undefeated 5A teams and average 13.5 points per game.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 61-65 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Ponca City coming off a 1-9 season and is led by first-year Head Coach Scott Harmon with a 127-55 record in sixteen seasons at lower classifications. The Wildcats haven’t had a winning season since 2005. They have never won a football title.

The Series (Sand Springs 25-18-1)

The Ponca City series was an exciting one from the very beginning. The first installment was in 1952 when the Wildcats knocked Cecil Hankins’s District Champions out of the playoffs in a home Thanksgiving Day battle. The next year resulted in a 7-7 tie. In 1954, with future MLB 3X World Series champion Jerry Adair at quarterback, the Sandites rallied from a 20-0 deficit to a 21-20 victory.

The series took a hiatus until 1961, when Ponca won handily, then stalled again till 1978. Sand Springs became the first team to win back-to-back meetings in 1981 with a 31-24 triple overtime win on the road.

The Wildcats won three in a row from 1984 to 1986, then Sand Springs won four in a row from 1987 to 1990, including the series’ first shutouts of 20-0 in 1988 and 28-0 in 1990. The Sandites won another streak of four from 1996-1999, then Ponca dominated from 2000 to 2005.

The Wildcats scored 40+ points in three-straight games during the dark ages of Sandite football. Sand Springs lost 28-straight games from 2001-2004, including a 41-0 shutout in 2004 and the Wildcats’ most lopsided victory at 48-2 in 2003.

Brad Odom’s Sandites snapped the losing streak in 2006 with a 21-0 shutout and they won five-straight from there. 2008 saw a wild 45-42 Sandite shootout victory. Sand Springs went 1-9 in 2010, but found their lone victory 35-28 against Ponca.

The Wildcats’ last victory came in 2011, and the Sandites are riding a six-game win streak. Sand Springs scored a series-best 57-7 win in 2013, and the highest-scoring meeting between the two teams came in 2016 at 56-35. Last year Payton Scott scored five touchdowns in a 42-7 road win.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites finish season 5th in FVC with 3-1 win at Booker T. Washington

(Tulsa) - The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (7-17) got off to a rough start in their final match of the regular season Monday, but ultimately prevailed 3-1 against Booker T. Washington (5-12).

The first set was a sloppy mess for both teams as the two combined for only thirteen kills against thirty errors. Sand Springs started 3-0 before giving up five straight. They trailed till 12-11 when Devree Youngblood capped a four-point run with a kill.

The Hornets quickly reclaimed their advantage and didn’t relinquish it again till another four-point run at 20-19. Jackie Patton gave her team the 22-20 lead, the Sandites tied it, then Patton scored a kill and a block en route to the 25-22 victory.

Game two was much cleaner for both teams and the visitors prevailed 25-19 despite committing eleven total errors with five on the serve. The set started with a rocky exchange but the Hornets took their only lead at 3-2 before Sand Springs surged ahead to a 13-5 advantage.

The teams exchanged kills till 16-8, then the Hornets rattled off four straight, capped by Kaya Neal to make it 16-12. It was a tight back-and-forth from there with neither team winning more than two rallies in row, and Youngblood sealed the win with an assist from Madison Burris. Vanessa Wyrick led all scorers with four kills.

The Sandites played their smoothest game in set three, winning 25-11 despite only scoring eight kills. Youngblood, Gillian Wicker, and Cheyenne Henry scored aces, Youngblood had a block, and the team committed only three errors.

Booker T rallied from a 4-2 deficit to a 7-4 lead in game four and held the frontline till a block from Henry and Burris made it 17-16. Henry and Cloe Campfield notched kills to cap a five point run with a 19-16 lead before the teams traded service errors.

Four-straight Sandite errors let the Hornets back into the game with a 21-20 home lead, Wyrick tied it, then the Hornets got their last point on a Sandite error before their visitors rattled off four points for the win. Burris iced the cake on a tipped ball.

The Sandites will either end their season or punch their ticket to State tomorrow at Owasso in a single elimination Regional Tournament. The No. 8 ranked Rams (23-9) will take on Muskogee (17-13) at 4:00 p.m. Sand Springs will play No. 9 Broken Arrow (19-12) at 6:00 p.m. The Championship round will be played at 7:30 p.m.

Sand Springs is 0-2 against the Tigerettes, falling 3-1 at the Broken Arrow Invitational in August and 3-0 last Tuesday. The Sandites averaged 15.3 points per set against Broken Arrow, who went 8-0 for an undefeated Frontier Valley Conference Championship this season. Sand Springs finished fifth of ten teams in conference standings.

Owasso won their lone meeting with Sand Springs 3-0, giving up an average of 14 points per set, and finished third in conference. Muskogee lost 3-0 to Owasso, Broken Arrow, and Sand Springs and placed seventh in the conference.
