CPHS Softball: State Tournament Preview

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team is headed to the OSSAA Class 6A State Tournament for the fourth straight year after winning their sixteenth Regional Championship last week.

The State Tournament was previously held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, but will be moving to The Ballfields at Firelake at 18160 Rangeline, Shawnee this year.

The Sandites (23-8) will take on Edmond North (27-3) in the quarterfinals Thursday at 4:00 p.m. The two teams have yet to meet this season, but the Sandites are the underdogs going off mutual opponents. Sand Springs had to battle back through the loser’s bracket at Regionals, while the Huskies are riding a fourteen-game win streak.

Edmond North has a 5-2 win over Durant (26-8) who defeated the Sandites 9-4. The Huskies are 2-0 against Jenks (24-11) with wins of 9-5 and 12-3, while the Trojans doubled Sand Springs 10-5. Edmond North won 6-2 against Moore (19-16) who defeated Sand Springs 4-3. Edmond North shut out Union (20-21) twice, 5-0 and 11-0. The Sandites went 2-1 against Union at Regionals, winning 10-0 and 13-7, but losing 1-3 in their first meeting.

Sand Springs has never won a State title, but came in runner-up in 2015 and 1992. They have only advanced past the quarterfinals a handful of times in school history. The Huskies won titles in 2004 and 2012.

The winner of the Sandites’ quarterfinal game will take on the winner of Yukon (22-8) vs. Broken Arrow (32-5) Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Tigers have a pair of 5-2 wins over the Sandites, who have yet to meet Yukon this year. Broken Arrow holds eleven State titles, most recently in 2009. Yukon has won five State titles, lastly in 2010.

The Millers split wins with Broken Arrow and have two wins over Moore who defeated the Sandites 4-3. They also have a win over Union.

On the north side of the bracket are Deer Creek (27-3) vs. Stillwater (21-10) and Owasso (25-9) vs. Westmoore (29-5). Deer Creek and Owasso won their lone State titles in 2003 and 1995, respectively. Westmoore and Stillwater have never won fast pitch titles. The State Championship game will be played Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Sand Springs is 2-0 against Stillwater with wins of 13-3 and 8-0. They defeated Owasso 6-5 and Westmoore 2-1 but have yet to meet Deer Creek. The Antlers have wins of 6-3 and 4-3 against Broken Arrow and a 4-2 win over Jenks.

The Sandites are batting .353 this season with a .539 slugging average and .411 on-base percentage. They outscore their opponents 7.7 to 2.3 while allowing 4.8 hits and committing 1.26 errors per game.

Shawnee offers plenty of attractions for Sandites who make the weekend drive. The town is home to the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, the Pottawatomie County Museum, and the Citizen Pottawatomie Nation Cultural Heritage Center. Other fun activities can be found at the FireLake Family Resort Bowling Center, the BDC Gunroom, and the Brickhouse Saloon & Tap Room Grill.

CPHS Football: Bruins sabotage Sandite Homecoming 29-27, presented by Kelly Smith - Farmers Insurance

For the third week in a row the Charles Page High School football team blew a halftime lead and gave up a down-to-the-wire heart-breaker. The 29-27 Homecoming loss to Bartlesville dropped the Sandites to 1-5 on the season and likely knocked the Sandites out of playoff contention.

Technically they could still qualify for the post-season, but they would need to win out and upset the two top teams in the district. A win over Bartlesville was desperately needed.

The Sandites racked up three first downs on a methodical first drive to the Bruin 37 yard line. Joel Mackey took a handoff on a crucial third-and-eleven. He suffered a hard hit around the first down marker, but recovered with a pirouette and a drunken pirate stumble into the endzone for the first score of the game. Jaden Weiser’s point-after kick sailed true to make it 7-0 at the 8:40 mark.

Both sides of the ball were effective for the Sandites in the next few minutes as the defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense scored in only four plays. Senior quarterback Caden Pennington hit sophomore standout Daren Hawkins from 38 yards out for the 13-0 lead, but a two-point play was no good.

The Bruins found their footing from there, scoring four plays later on a 49-yard pass from Ben Winters to Nicolus Tessier. Dylan McCoy’s kick cut it to 13-7 with 4:54 in the first quarter, but Pennington restored the two-score lead with a 34-yarder to Hawkins and Weiser put back another kick to make it 20-7.

Then came Bartlesville’s long climb back.

Laken Clowdus scored on a 24-yard run on the opening drive of the second quarter, though the extra-point was no good. The Bruins made a fourth-down stand at their own 25 and marched to the Sandite red zone, but Sand Springs held them to fourth-and-goal from the five and a field goal attempt from McCoy sailed wide.

The Sandites took a knee with a 20-13 halftime lead that would soon evaporate.

Luke Bratcher forced a fumble for freshman Kaden Glass to recover on the Bruins’ first possession of the second half, but Mackey fumbled the ball right back on the very next play.

Bartlesville returned to the red zone soon after and Taton Hopkins took over kicking duties with a 34-yard field goal.

The Bruins got another turnover on the Sandites’ next possession as Elijah Williams ripped the ball from Pennington’s arms and almost took it to the house. Only one Sandite stood between Williams and the end zone, but tailback Trey Wilkerson made the tackle to save the score. It wouldn’t matter, however, as the Bruins scored four minutes later on a one-yard keeper. The Bruins had their first lead of the night at 23-20.

After trading off punts the Sandites got back out in front with 3:29 to play, scoring on a nineteen-yard pass from Pennington to Braden Foster. Weiser’s kick made it 27-23.

An explosive performance from Clowdus marched the ball to the one yard-line, setting up Winters for the game-winning score. Mackey blocked the extra point and Pennington made a 29-yard pass to Foster, setting up a Hail Mary scenario at the 48-yard line with five seconds left. Shane Simpson ended the game with an interception to seal the victory.

Pennington ended the night 6-13-138-1 passing and led the ground game with thirteen carries for 95 yards. Winters was 16-22-221-0 for the Bruins. Hayden Cramer led the defense in total tackles with twelve, but Bratcher led in unassisted takedowns with eight, including a five-yard sack.

Sand Springs Football (1-5, 0-3) will return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m. with a road game in Ponca City (0-6, 0-3).

The Class 6A-II No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-4, 0-2) is still looking for their first district win, making Friday’s Homecoming bout with No. 12 Bartlesville (1-4, 0-2) all the more crucial.

The two teams have identical records and both need to start winning ASAP if they hope to make the playoffs.

While the game will be played Friday, the Sand Springs Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the downtown Triangle District. Following the parade, there will be a prayer rally for Head Coach Dustin Kinard at the Ed Dubie Field House at 7:30 p.m. Kinard was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned prior to the game on Friday.

Last Week

Sand Springs had an excellent showing in a home game against Muskogee and led 27-24 heading into the fourth quarter before the Roughers rattled off 21 unanswered points to close the night. Caden Pennington scored on a 29-yard run and a 60-yard pass to Daren Hawkins. Joel Mackey scored on a 29-yard run and Trey Wilkerson scored on a 27-yard run.

Jaden Weiser was three-for-three on extra points. Pennington was 5-14-80-0 passing and Mackey led the ground at 15-100. The offensive line opened up huge blocks all night long and the defense was solid as well. The Roughers began to shut down the ground game in the third, however, and the Sandites failed to adjust.

DeAndre Young ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns in the Bruins’ 63-58 shootout loss at Sapulpa, and Laken Clowdus ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 61-64 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Bartlesville is coming off a 1-8 season, led by first year Head Coach Lee Blankenship who holds a 61-30 career record. The Bruins have been in Class 6A-II since its inception but haven’t made the playoffs since a 10-2 season in 2015. They have never won a State Title in football.

The Series (Bartlesville 38-25)

The Bartlesville-Sand Springs series dates back to the very first year of Sand Springs football, when the Sandites defeated Bartlesville Central High 19-7 under Head Coach Ivan Grover. Sand Springs High School and the Yellowjackets split the series 3-3 before Central High School was converted to a junior high in 1939.

College High, which lasted from 1939 to 1982, won an intermittent series with the Sandites 10-4. The Sooner High Spartans (1966-1982) also led their series 6-3.

The rivalry renewed in 1982, the very first year after Sooner High and College High unified as Bartlesville High School under a new mascot, the Bruin. The two teams met annually through 1997 and the Bruins led that series 11-5 including a seven-year win streak. After a two-year hiatus, they met again from 2000 to present and the Sandites lead that run 10-8.

Sand Springs won the last two meetings handily, 55-13 last year and 47-28 in 2016. They won a 28-27 Homecoming thriller in 2014 and a 34-0 Homecoming shutout in 2011. The Bruins haven’t beaten Sand Springs at Memorial Stadium since 2009. The Sandites have shut out Bartlesville eight times in program history, and have been shut out ten times.

Last year Payton Scott, currently redshirting at the University of Central Oklahoma, set the all time school record with a 47-507, 7TD rushing performance in a 55-13 win over Bartlesville.

CPHS Softball: Sandites headed to the 'Ship

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team is headed to the OSSAA Class 6A State Tournament for the fourth straight year after winning their sixteenth Regional Championship Wednesday evening.

The Sandites defeated Enid 18-0 in the first round, but fell 3-1 to Union in game two. In the loser’s bracket they brutalized Enid once again, this time 16-0 for a rematch with Union, which they won 10-0 to force a tie-breaker game. They won that bout 13-7 to earn their ticket to Shawnee.

The Sandites had their best hitting performance of the season in the first game with Enid, batting .586 as a team with seventeen hits. Jacie Taber got the win on the mound with seven strikeouts, two walks and no hits in three innings. Mackenzie Bechtold pitched two innings of relief and threw three strikeouts, one walk, and no hits.

Madelyn Blair pitched the seven inning loss to Union, tossing eight hits, four strikeouts, and no walks. SEE RELATED: CPHS Softball: Sandites upset 3-1 by Union, play Wednesday at noon

The rematch with Enid was only a hair less impressive than the first game as Bechtold shut out the Pacers with six strikeouts and no walks to only one hit. The girls had their second-best batting average of the season at .545 and their second-best slugging average at 1.00 with nine doubles. Taber and Usher hit home runs and Usher was a perfect four-for-four at the plate. Taber was three-of-four and led the team with four RBI.

Taber got the 10-0 shutout win over Union with four strikeouts, three hits, and two walks. Sand Springs dominated their foes with twelve hits, including five doubles. Felicity Horn was three-for-three at bat. Taber had a team-high two runs, and Usher and Horn led in RBI with three apiece. The game started uneventfully with one run in the third, and one in the fourth. But the Sandites exploded in the bottom of the fifth for the run-rule victory.

The final game was the longest of the season for Sand Springs, and it was an absolute slugfest. The two teams combined for twenty runs, 21 hits, sixteen walks, four errors, and stranded seventeen total runners. Blair got the start on the mound, throwing seven hits and two walks before being relieved by Taber midway through the third. Taber finished out with three hits, one strikeout, and four walks for the win. The Sandites never trailed, but Union threatened throughout. Deer Creek (27-3) won their Regional 3-0 and are riding an eleven game win streak. They won their lone State title in 2003.

Owasso (25-9) won their Regional 2-0. Their only State title was won in 1995.
Broken Arrow (32-5) won their Regional 2-0. The Tigers hold eleven State titles, most recently in 2009.
Westmoore (28-5) will play Southmoore (22-11) Thursday for the Regional title.
Yukon (21-8) will play Mustang (17-11) Thursday for the Regional title.
Jenks (24-9), Bartlesville (15-15), and Stillwater (17-9) will begin their Regional Tournament Thursday.

CPHS Cross Country: Boys and Girls Varsity place second, Elementary Girls take first at Kiefer

Sand Springs Cross Country had a great weekend in Kiefer. The elementary girls won their one-mile race, the varsity boys and girls both placed second in the 5K, the elementary boys placed fourth, and the junior high boys placed sixth.

Two varsity Lady Sandites placed top-ten and five were in the top twenty. Erika Baker led the squad with a 22:31 finish for ninth place, closely followed by Chezney Kelley in 22:42 for tenth.

The varsity boys had three in the top five and five in the top fifteen, led by runner-up Jacob Smith in 16:50. Aden Baughman was fourth in 16:52 and Nelson Yazzie placed fifth in 17:14.

Seventeen elementary girls competed, led by fifth-grader Brynlee Durborrow with a 6:23 mile for second. Chloe Grona, third grade, placed fifth in 6:37 and four other Lady Sandites placed in the top twenty.

The elementary boys also had the runner-up in fourth-grader Griffin Sensintaffar with a 6:02 mile. Jakob Skipper, also in fourth grade, was third in 6:10.

The Sandites will compete at the Owasso Invitational in Tulsa’s Mohawk Park Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

After a 3-1 upset to Union in the second round of the 6A Regional Championship, the Charles Page High School softball team rattled off three-straight wins to earn their fourth-straight and sixteenth total Regional title Wednesday evening at the Sandite Softball Complex.

Sand Springs (23-8) defeated Enid 16-0 in the loser’s bracket and paid back their earlier loss with a 10-0 five-inning run-rule victory over Union (20-21) earlier in the day. With both teams holding one loss in the double-elimination tournament, they went to a do-or-die Championship match that the Sandites won 13-7.

Rogers State University-commit Kimi Presnell hit a home run on the first at-bat of the game and that set the pace for the shootout to come. Madelyn Blair hit a full count single with two outs to keep the inning alive. Jacie Taber reached on an error and scored alongside courtesy runner Drew Hawkins off a double from Felicity Horn for the 3-0 lead before Union came in to bat.

Delaney Mills hit a single in the bottom of the inning but was too ambitious and got put out on the throw to second. Madelyn Blair hit one Redskin for a walk, but the runner was left stranded as Sand Springs came in for another successful offensive. Jenson Arnold singled and Madison Lee ran courtesy. Presnell drew a walk and a fielder’s choice advanced Lee to third, setting up a full count RBI double from Sabrina Usher.

Hailey McPherson hit a single in the bottom of the second, but Presnell made a double play on the next at-bat with a tag and a throw to first. Kallie Lund and Jordan Carroll hit singles, but both were stranded as Elizabeth Luttrell caught a ground ball for the force at first.

Taber hit a home run in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead. Lund walked three-straight, setting up Presnell for a sacrifice fly to score Felicity Horn, but a force at first stranded two to keep the Redskins alive.

Union finally began to battle back in the bottom of the third with back to back doubles from Mills and Lauryn Adams, the latter scoring the former. Adrianna Young singled but was put out on a fielder’s choice. Then McPherson scored Adams and Unique Robinson on a home run to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Taber took over pitching from there and the inning ended with no further scores after Cameron Clemons caught a line drive at third and Usher made a throw to second to avert a steal. Blair finished with eight hits and two walks.

Union had a pitching change on the way as well after walking two to load the bases. Lund finished the game with six hits, seven walks, and one strikeout. Things didn’t improve, however. Blair walked in, Luttrell batted in Horn and Clemons, and Presnell doubled in Raegan Rector to make it 10-4.

The Redskins scored one on a wild pitch and one on an error in the bottom of the inning to claw their way back into it. McPherson hit an RBI single to make it 10-7 before Blair caught an infield fly to end the melee.

Usher and Taber kicked off the next Sandite offensive with a pair of singles and Horn walked to load the bases. Clemons batted in Usher with a sacrifice fly, but the Sandites stranded two with a strikeout.

The Sand Springs infield showed off in the bottom of the inning with line drive catches from Clemons and Presnell. Taber walked one, but Blair caught a pop fly for the final out. Union started the sixth hot with two fly outs, but Usher hit a 2RBI homer to score Skaggs and make it 13-7.

The Sandites had their only scoreless inning in the seventh, but they held the Redskins scoreless as well to secure the win after three long hours. Taber gave up four hits and four walks with one strikeout.
