CPHS Softball: Sandites host Regional Championship Tuesday and Wednesday

The three-time defending Regional Champions will look for their fourth-straight ticket to State this week.

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (19-7) ended their regular season Thursday with a 6-4 loss to Oologah-Talala (26-6) after committing five errors in their Regional tune-up game. On Tuesday they’ll look to rebound with a noon battle against Enid (2-21).

The Sandites actually outhit the Mustangs 9-6, but couldn’t get past their own mistakes. Jacie Taber (3-0, 32-10) walked one and Cameron Clemons made an error at third in the top of the first, setting up a 2RBI single by Bailie Runner.

Sabrina Usher tied the game in the bottom of the third with her sixth home run of the season, bringing in Kimi Presnell who singled. It wouldn’t take long for the Mustangs to jump back out front, however. With Aliyah Taff (4-4, 4-6) taking over pitching duties in the fourth, the Sandites gave up two singles and two errors, letting Oologah take a 4-2 lead.

Madelyn Blair hit her fourth home run of the year in the bottom of the sixth, but Oologah took advantage of two singles and two errors in the seventh for the 6-3 advantage. Jenson Arnold doubled in Usher in the bottom of the inning, but that would be the last run of the game.

The Sandites should have an easy start to the Regional Tournament Tuesday. Enid has won only two games and has been shutout ten times. The two teams haven’t met yet this season, but the Sandites are 8-1 against mutual opponents with an average score of 10-2, while the Pacers are 0-9 with an average of 1-12.

On the other side of the bracket is Union (19-19) vs. Putnam City North (5-24) at 2:00 p.m. The Sandites have a pair of 10-0 shutouts against Putnam North, but have yet to meet Union this season.

Sand Springs is 5-4 against mutual opponents with the Redskins, with an average score of 4-3. The Redskins are 3-9 with an average score of 5-7. The Sandites have a 3-0 win over Ft. Gibson, who beat Union 10-9. Union split wins with Moore, while the Sandites fell 4-3 in their only meeting. Sand Springs beat Owasso 6-5, who beat Union 4-0 and 10-4. The Sandites also beat Westmoore 2-1, who Union lost 10-0 to.

The losers of the first two games will play an elimination match at 4:00 p.m and the winners will play at 6:00 p.m. The consolation winner will play the Game 4 loser Wednesday at noon, and the winner of that game will play the top team at 2:00 p.m. A seventh game will be played at 4:00 p.m. if necessary.

The Sandites hold fifteen Regional titles and have won three years straight to advance to the State Tournament. They lost in the quarterfinals the past two years but advanced to the Championship round in 2015, falling 4-3 to Choctaw. The Class of 2019 has a chance to be only the fourth team in school history to go to State every year.

CPHS Football: Muskogee tops Sandites 45-27 with fourth-quarter shutout

The Class 6A-II No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-4, 0-2) had No. 7 Muskogee (4-1, 2-0) on the ropes for much of Friday night’s district shootout, but the Roughers rallied with a 21-0 fourth-quarter shutout for the 45-27 win.

The game was an instant classic as the Sandites scored less than a minute in on only the third play of the night. Joel Mackey ran the ball 29 yards to the Muskogee 29, and Caden Pennington took it to the house with blocking help from Cameron Lierly and JT Bristow. Jaden Weiser’s PAT made it 7-0 at the 11:07 mark.

The Roughers weren’t as explosive as their hosts, but they got the job done on their opening possession, marching 66 yards in ten plays with a four-yard scoring run from Jimmie Coleman. Gage Foreman’s kick tied it at 6:10.

Three plays was too many for the Sandites, and this time they decided to score in one. Seth Jones made a seventeen-yard kick return and Pennington connected on a career-long sixty-yard touchdown pass to Daren Hawkins. Weiser’s PAT made it 14-7 at 5:52.

The Sandite defense came up big on the next drive, holding the Roughers to four consecutive zero-gain plays for a turnover at their thirty yard line. The Rougher defense was equally effective, however, and a fumbled hike on a Sandite punt resulted in a safety. Two plays later and Coleman ran 56 yards for their first lead of the night. Kaunor Ashley made the two-point play for a 17-14 lead.

Sand Springs kicked off the second quarter with a methodical nine-play 65-yard march, capped by a 29-yard run from Mackey and a Weiser PAT. The defense came out strong once again, forcing a punt and a turnover on downs to hold on to a 21-17 halftime lead.

The two teams traded punts to start the third quarter before Muskogee scored on a five-yard run from Coleman. Sand Springs responded with a 27-yard touchdown run from Trey Wilkerson, but a two-point pass attempt fell flat. Up 27-24 at the end of the third, those would be the last points the Sandites scored.

Coleman scored on a four-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter, then on a three-yard run, then Ty Williams scored on a three-yard run for the final score of 45-27.

Pennington started the night 3-6-69 passing but ended 5-14-80-0 after several deep ball attempts in the final minutes. Mackey led the ground game with fifteen carries for 100 yards, followed by Wilkerson with seven carries for 59 and Pennington with twelve carries for 55. Hayden Cramer led the defense with nineteen tackles.

Sand Springs football will return to action next Friday for homecoming against No. 12 Bartlesville (1-4, 0-2).

The Church That Matters Tailgate Crew raised $1,510 for Sandite Baseball prior to the game and has raised more than $5,200 for Sandite Athletics this season. Next week’s tailgate party will benefit Sandite Wrestling, who returns two State Champions this season and has placed top four in the state for the past six seasons.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites upset No. 7 Claremore 3-2 on Senior Night

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team notched a 3-2 upset over Class 5A No. 7 ranked Claremore (14-14) Thursday evening on Senior Night. The Sandites won the first two sets against the Zebras, lost the next two, and won the fifth before a boisterous crowd of fans at the Ed Dubie Field House

The Sandites jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of kills from Devree Youngblood before the Zebras got on the board with a service error and a kill from Danielle Meisinger. Rachel Hines kicked off a three-point run for the Sandites, but Claremore tied it up at 7-7. Youngblood scored two more kills and combined on a block with Vanessa Wyrick for an 11-7 lead, then the visitors battled back for a 15-13 advantage.

Things got heated from there as neither team won more than two rallies in a row. The set tied eight times but ultimately the Sandites prevailed 25-23 anchored by Youngblood with seven kills and Madison Burris with one kill and seven assists. Cheyenne Henry hit the lone Sandite ace in game one.

The second set started with a 5-1 Sandite lead thanks to kills from Youngblood and Hines, and an ace from Burris. Then the Zebras went on a 7-1 run for the lead with two aces from Riley Renfroe. Wyrick scored a kill and a block to tie it, then Youngblood had a pair of aces for the lead. The back and forth affair continued with an ace from Jones for the 12-10 Zebra lead. The game tied at 15 and Sand Springs took the lead at 18-17 with three-straight Zebra errors.

Jones and Briley Penny combined on a block to tie it again, but that would be the last time as the Sandites thundered ahead to a 25-21 victory. Claremore outkilled the Sandites 11-8 but the Sandites won the ace battle 5-3 and only committed five total errors.

The Zebras battled back in the third set, rallying from a 15-11 deficit to an 18-16 lead that they never surrendered. They came alive at the net with five blocks as the difference maker.

The fourth game got off to a great start for the Sandites with a 6-0 lead. The tag team duo of Burris and Youngblood combined for two blocks and two kills before the Zebras got on the board with a service error. The visitors began to rally after Youngblood came out with an injury, but McKenzie Harris and Gillian Wicker filled in well and the Zebras didn’t take their first lead till 18-17. They ran away with it from there, however, for a 25-20 victory.

Sand Springs used a three-point run for a 5-3 lead in the final set, Claremore won three to make it 6-5, Sand Springs won four to make it 9-6, Claremore won four more, then Sand Springs won five more. Claremore notched a campfire kill to try and stall the Sandite tide, but Hailey Grant hit out-of-bounds to give Sand Springs the win at 15-12.

On Tuesday the Lady Sandites fell 25-19, 25-13, and 25-18 to No. 14 Bixby (16-12, 6-3).

Sand Springs Volleyball (6-16, 4-3) will return to action Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. with a Frontier Valley Conference home match against No. 9 Broken Arrow (18-11, 7-0) who they previously fell 3-1 to at the Tigers’ home tournament.

Sand Springs librarian Richard Why wins Ponca City Open

Sand Springs librarian Richard Why took first place at the Ponca City Open Sunday with a two-round score of 106 in the top division.

Why shot a 52 in round one and a 54 in the second round to finish two strokes under par. Runner-Up Larry Gardner shot a 108. Just Robertson, of Sand Springs, placed seventh with a 115 total and second round score of 56.

Why placed second earlier this month at the Thirteenth Annual Northshore Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He shot nine under par with a two-round score of 101. He won the Second Annual Return of the Little Big Show in Neosho, Missouri last month with a two-round score of 92 for twenty under par.

Why is sponsored by FOSSA Disc Golf, WhyDry Chalk Bags, and Negative Disc Golf. He has won three tournaments this year and will be competing at the Thirteenth Annual Four States Open in Joplin this coming weekend.

CPHS Cross Country: Boys place 3rd at Holland Hall, Sensintaffar wins elementary race

The Sand Springs Cross Country program competed in Tulsa this past weekend at the Holland Hall Invitational.

The Varsity Boys team placed third of nineteen schools, led by Jacob Smith with a 17:32 finish for eleventh place. The junior varsity team placed tenth.

Chezney Kelley placed 42nd in the Varsity Girls 5K, leading the Lady Sandites to a tenth place finish out of fourteen schools.

The Elementary Boys placed fifth of seven teams in the 1600-meter run, led by third-grader Griffin Sensintaffar in first place with a time of 6:06. The girls finished third of nine teams, led by fourth-grader Brynlee Durborrow in 6:24 for second place.

Holland Hall won the varsity boys’ race and Metro Christian Academy won the girls’ run.

Sand Springs will return to action at the Owasso Invitational in Mohawk Park October 4th.

UWW Wrestling: Daton Fix takes Bronze at Junior Freestyle World Championship

Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate Daton Fix recently brought home bronze from the Junior Freestyle World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia.

Fix was the defending World Champion at 57 kilograms after a dominant 5-0 performance in 2017 when he outscored his opponents 53-1. He also won bronze in 2016 and 2015.

Fix was equally dominant in his early matches this time around, defeating Turkey’s Ahmet Tas and Ukraine’s Andrii Dzhelep 10-0 each. He was defeated 5-4 in the semifinals by eventual silver medalist Naveen Naveen from India, but won his bronze medal match 10-0 against Kazakhstan’s Bekbolot Myrzanazar Uulu. Russia’s Akhmed Idrisov won the gold 12-1 over Naveen.

Russia won the tournament handily with six finalists and five champions. No other country crowned more than one champion, though the United States had the second-most finalists with three. Virginia Tech freshman Mekhi Kevin Lewis was the lone American champion, taking the 74KG weight class 5-1 over Azerbaijan’s Abubakr Abakarov.

Japan won the Women’s Freestyle tournament with six champions, while the United States placed eighth with a silver medalist. Iran placed first in Greco Roman with four champions and the United States was eighth with a silver medalist. Russia was second in both Greco and Women’s Freestyle.

Fix will soon begin his freshman year at Oklahoma State University after redshirting last season. Fix was a four-time undefeated State Champion at Sand Springs. Last year he defeated the defending Pac 12 Champion and an ACC finalist at the Reno Tournament of Champions while wrestling unattached.

The OSU Cowboys went 13-2 last season, winning their sixth-consecutive Big 12 title, and placed thirteen at the NCAA tournament.
