CPHS Football: Sandites fall 23-20 in OT at Shawnee, Mackey runs for 251

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-3, 0-1) took a 12-6 halftime lead into the locker room Friday night in Shawnee, but the No. 15 ranked Wolves (1-3, 1-0) took advantage of key Sand Springs turnovers to force overtime, winning 23-20 before a small crowd of dedicated fans in a relentless chilling drizzle.

Joel Mackey made a statement with an eighty-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game, and racked up a career-high 251 yards and one touchdown on thirty carries. Caden Pennington was held to a 5-11-79-1 passing performance due to the rain, but accumulated 78 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The Sandites forced a punt on Shawnee’s opening drive, but fumbled the ball away to Elijah Powis at their own 26. Four plays later and Tre’Juan Shaw punched it in from twenty yards out. Their PAT sailed wide and the teams were tied up at 6-6.

The Sandites gave up a turnover on downs at the Shawnee thirteen, but caught a break with a fumble recovery from freshman Kaden Glass. This time they hit pay dirt on a sixteen-yard run from Pennington, but once again the point-after attempt failed. They had one more chance to score before the half, but Demetress Beavers broke up a red zone pass attempt as time expired.

Shawnee tied it up on the opening drive of the third quarter with a 27-yard run from Shaw, but Jerret Haley stopped a two-point run attempt from Trenton Skinner. They took the lead soon after with a five-yard run from Shaw, who also punched in the two-point conversion.

The Sandites tied it on an eighty-yard march and one-yard keeper, with a Pennington two-point conversion as well. Justis Myers made a crucial sack on a fourth-down attempt in the Sandite red zone and the Sandites put together one last push.

Ten plays later the Sandites threatened at the Shawnee 22-yard line, but Kaiden Johnson caught Pennington’s first interception of the season to force overtime.

Both teams got four downs from the ten-yard line in overtime. Shawnee won the toss and elected to play defense first.

The ground game proved fruitless for Sand Springs and they tried a shotgun formation on fourth-and-six. Pennington scrambled out of a collapsed pocket and had a wide open lane to the left, but the weather struck once again as his feet slid out from under him on the soaking turf.

Shawnee made no gains on their first two carries and threw an incompletion, but Kossi Kodoe connected on a 27-yard field goal to secure the upset victory.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at home with a district bout against No. 6 Muskogee (3-1, 1-0). The Wolves will host No. 16 Ponca City (0-4, 0-1). Muskogee defeated Ponca City 16-7 on Friday.

CPHS Football: Sandites up 12-6 at halftime, Mackey has 165 yards

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team took a 12-6 halftime lead into the locker room Friday night in Shawnee, despite doubling the No. 15 ranked Wolves (0-3) in offensive yardage.

Senior quarterback Caden Pennington picked up sixteen yards for a first down on the first play of their next drive. Mackey carried the ball to the eighteen, Pennington snagged seven more, but an incomplete fourth-down pass turned the ball over.

Sand Springs got a big break on the second play of the second quarter when freshman standout Kaden Glass recovered a fumbled lateral and set up a four-play 56-yard drive capped by a sixteen-yard scoring run from Pennington. Once again the point-after failed, but the Sandites were back out front at 12-6.

Three punts later and the Sandites put together another solid drive, parking at the Shawnee nine-yard line. The clock was their enemy, however, and Demetress Beavers broke up a third-down endzone pass as time expired.

Sand Springs attempted only five passes in the first half, while Shawnee attempted zero due to the rainy conditions. Mackey ended up with fifteen carries for 165 yards, including 134 in the first quarter. Pennington had an even fifty yards on two passes, including a fourteen-yard shovel pass to Jacob Snodgrass, and a impressive 36-yard deep ball to Colton Roberts.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites drop matches to Owasso and Cascia Hall

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (5-15) dropped a 3-1 match to 5A No. 4 Cascia Hall (22-8) Thursday evening, giving the eight-time State Championship-winning program a run for their money on their home court.

Cascia needed only six kills to steal the first set from Sand Springs, who committed thirteen errors. The Sandites actually led in kills with seven, including three from Madison Burris, and both teams had three aces. After doubling down 12-6 on Sand Springs, the Commandos gave up six-straight for a tie score. Devree Youngblood scored all three Sandite aces during that run. The home team quickly adjusted, however, and rattled off a six-straight streak of their own en route to a 25-16 win.

The Sandites brought their A game in Set Two, however, winning a 27-25 thriller. Youngblood and Campfield scored three kills apiece and Campfield hit two aces, but the difference-maker was the Commandos’ twelve errors. Cascia only led for four rallies, but the game tied eleven times.

Cascia found another gear in the third game, rallying from a 7-4 deficit to a 20-10 lead. Sand Springs found kills from Campfield, Burris, and Cheyenne Henry to try and battle back, but the Commandos won four in a row to close the deal at 25-15. The Sandites out-killed the Commandos 12-11, led by Henry with five, but committed ten errors to Cascia’s three.

Sand Springs led for the entirety of the fourth set before blowing a 19-11 lead. Cascia won five rallies straight, Rachel Hines scored one for the Sandites, then Cascia won four more to tie it at 20-20. Two Commando errors and a Campfield ace made it 23-20 and it looked like Campfield would serve another ace. Instead, a dogpile of Commandos managed to miraculously dig the ball out and caught the Sandites in a campfire. Two kills tied it, Youngblood made it 24-23, then Cascia rattled off three more points for the 26-24 win.

On Tuesday the Sandites traveled to No. 8 Owasso (17-6) and fell 3-0.

The Lady Sandites fell into an 11-2 hole in the first set before Raylynn Mong scored their first kill on a tipped ball. They began to battle back from there and closed the deficit to 16-11 with kills from Madison Burris, Cheyenne Henry, Devree Youngblood, Vanessa Wyrick and Cloe Campfield, but the Rams turned up the heat and rocketed forward to a 25-13 win with ten kills, two blocks, and four aces. Madison Blaylock had five digs in the set.

The second set was only a one-point improvement as the Rams won 25-14 with twelve kills and a dozen Sand Springs errors. Owasso won the third set 25-15 with a dozen kills and eleven Sandite errors.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. with a home match against Bixby.

CPHS Softball: Sandites run-rule Stillwater 13-3, Usher and Presnell hit home runs

After suffering their first district loss of the season last week, the Lady Sandites could easily have fallen into a slump. Instead, they rallied to their best offensive performance of the season for a 13-3 run-rule victory over Stillwater High School (15-6, 5-3) Tuesday evening on their home field.

Stillwater is the number-three team in the district, even after the loss, but the Sandites beat them as easily as everyone else who crosses their path. The Charles Page High School softball team (17-5, 7-1) batted .483 with fourteen hits, their best percentage in the past 25 games.

Rogers State University-committed senior Kimi Presnell hit a triple and a home run, while junior Sabrina Usher hit a double and her fifth home-run of the season. Missouri State commit Jacie Taber (2-0, 31-10) got the win on the mound, giving up no runs, two hits, and one walk with three strikeouts in three innings.

Stillwater threatened early, loading the bases with two walks and an error, but Taber’s first strikeout of the night left them wanting and the Sandites came in to start the slugfest.

Makenna Skaggs bounced a double off the center field wall and was joined on base by Usher with a walk and Jenson Arnold with a single. Taber brought in Skaggs on a sacrifice and Cameron Clemons cleaned up with a 2RBI single into right field.

The Lady Sandites brought a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second and Presnell smashed a solo home run over the center field wall.

Taber stranded two hits with a strikeout in the top of the third, and Elizabeth Luttrell singled in Jolee McNally to make it 5-0.

Presnell kicked off the fourth with a triple and came in on a single from Skaggs, who in turn scored on Usher’s home run.

Julia Cottrill got the Pioneers on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and Sidney McLaughlin singled in Gracie Ore, but the Sandites surged ahead for the run-rule in the bottom of the inning.

Madison Lee scored on a wild pitch, Usher doubled in Presnell, Arnold doubled in Usher, and Clemons singled in Drew Hawkins. Taber scored on a wild pitch to secure the victory.

Madelyn Blair (7-1, 26-6) pitched the last two innings, throwing four hits, one strikeout, and one walk.

Sand Springs will return to action Thursday at Broken Arrow (27-3, 8-0), a must-have win if they hope to remain in contention for the District Title. The Tigers defeated the Sandites 2-5 in a come-from-behind seventh inning rally last Thursday.

CPHS Cross Country: Sandites host first-ever 5K, Boys place 4th, Girls 5th

Sand Springs hosted its first-ever cross country meet Saturday at Case Community Park. The Case Cross Country Invitational combined high school and junior high running with the Eighth Annual Conner’s Classic 5K.

The Conner’s Classic is an annual Sand Springs Public Schools Cross Country fundraiser, named for a former special needs student who is unable to run on his own. Elementary Coach Chris Corbin pushes Conner Williamson in an adult racing stroller each year so that the Sandite can participate.

The Conner’s Classic was previously held at Ray Brown Park next to Charles Page High School. This year it was held at Case as the opener before the school races began. Danyel Swafford (43) won the women’s run in 23:55 with a remarkable 2:14 lead on the runner-up, Gina Myers (36). Both ladies are from Sand Springs. Lydon Swafford (13) won the men’s run in 22:21 followed by Michael Randolph (41) in 23:49, both from Sand Springs.

Deer Creek High School from Edmond won all four high school categories, both men and women’s varsity and men and women’s junior varsity. Bartlesville Junior High won the girls’ race and Jenks Junior High won the boys’.

Sand Springs placed fifth of eight teams in the girls’ varsity race. The varsity boys placed fourth of eleven and the JV boys placed sixth of nine. The Lady Sandites did not field a full team for junior varsity.

Deer Creek sophomore Aubrey Byers won varsity girls in 20:34 followed by Grove sophomore Rory Geer in 21:43. Junior Erika Baker led the Lady Sandites with a nineteenth place finish in 24:19.

Deer Creek dominated the boys’ competition, winning the first four places and six of the top eight. Senior Steven Clark won in 17:05 closely followed by junior teammate Jack Reed in 17:08. Sandite senior Jacob Smith cracked the top ten in 18:34 with a narrow lead on teammate Nelson Yazzie in 18:41.

Deer Creek won the top eight places in JV girls and thirteen of the top fourteen, led by Zenaida Burgos in 23:01. Haylee Alford was the lone Lady Sandite in JV and finished 24th place in 29:07.

Freshman Landon Harrod led the Deer Creek JV boys in 18:22. The Antlers won six of the top seven spots. Kaegan Murray placed 28th for the Sandites in 21:11.

The Sandites will return to action October 4th, 2018 at the Owasso Invitational in Mohawk Park.
