CPHS Wrestling: Head Coach Kelly Smith resigns for private sector job

Charles Page High School lost its third Head Coach this school year when wrestling coach Kelly Smith announced his intentions to resign Friday.

Head Volleyball Coach Janna Green left Sand Springs Public Schools for a private sector coaching position after the fall season. Girls' Basketball Head Coach Dustin Morrow stepped down from coaching to spend more time with his family earlier this month, but will remain on staff as a science teacher. Now, Smith is leaving coaching and teaching to work in insurance.

Smith cited unreasonably low State teaching wages as a primary reason for his decision, along with a desire to spend more time with his family. The successful coach has spent years running a lawncare business to compliment his income, but after seventeen years as Head Coach, he has decided it's time to move on. "This is a young man's game," said Smith. "I don't have the time to be out mowing lawns all year while also putting in the hours to maintain a successful program. I have to put my family first."

Smith's family might keep him in the coaching business a little longer, at least on a part-time basis. His son, Mitchell, is a talented up and comer in the junior high circuit. But while he will still be around cheering on the Sandites from the stands, the district will have to find fresh blood to take the reigns.

Smith led the Sandites to their first-ever Dual State Championship in 2017 and followed it up with their first State Tournament title since 1971. The pair of championships were the first for Sand Springs in any sport since 1994. Nine Sandites won individual titles under his leadership, including five in the 2017 season. Even after losing four of those five, the Sandites placed third in the 6A State Tournament this past season with a 13-4 dual record.

"I got to live the dream," said Smith. "I got to take over for my coach and mentor. It's been a dream."

CPHS Soccer: Sapulpa sweeps Highway 97 Rivalry 6-1 in both matches

The Charles Page High School soccer teams suffered a pair of Highway 97 Rivalry defeats Tuesday night at the Westside Sports Complex. Sapulpa won both the boys and girls matches 6-1.

The Sapulpa girls (4-2, 1-0) snapped a two-game losing streak to kick off district action against the Lady Sandites (3-2, 0-1). Khaige English's first goal was nullified on an offsides call, but she made up for it less than a minute later to take the lead at 6:57. Kayln Anderson added another at 8:36, and Abby Graham had a great shot at 14:50 that was saved by Alison Day.

Julia Wolf scored with an assist from Kyle Taylor at 23:20, but it would be the only goal of the game for the visiting Lady Sandites. The Sandites trailed 2-1 at halftime and suffered a second half shutout. Stormie Ramsey scored two goals for Sapulpa, one with an assist from Graham, while Graham scored two and nearly had a third as she bounced a header off the crossbar.

Ethan Castillo kicked off boys' action for Sapulpa (5-1, 1-0) with a goal at 3:25, then assisted Caleb Walsh a few minutes later. Jack Bratcher got the visitors on the board at 8:54. Castillo had an offside goal nullified at 10:47, then Jaden Weiser nearly tied it up at 14:14 but the shot traveled just inches over the crossbar. Castillo scored on a penalty kick at 32:24 and Jaxon Zamudio scored at 39:01 for a 4-1 halftime advantage.

In the second half Walsh scored with an assist from Tj Hale at 65:16 and Castillo made it a hat trick at 69:30. Bratcher nearly had a brace, netting a header at 66:59, but was called offsides.

The Sandite boys (4-4, 0-1) were coming off a 3-1 win at Nathan Hale (2-2) that saw goals from Bratcher, Luke Jeffus, and Weiser. They will return to action next Tuesday with a district home game against Edmond Santa Fe (4-2, 1-0).

The Lady Sandites will play Collinsville (0-4) Thursday at 11:45 a.m. in the first round of the Stilwell Bank of Commerce Tournament. They will then play either Tahlequah (4-1) or Heavener (2-2) at 4:45 p.m.

Adcock scored on a single from Brock Youngblood and Millican walked in for the 10-0 lead before the Demons finally caught a fly out to end the melee.

Sandite of the Week: Julia Wolf scores hat trick in 4-0 shutout

Charles Page High School sophomore forward Julia Wolf had the best Sandite Soccer performance of the season last week, scoring a hat trick against Nathan Hale (0-4) in a 4-0 non-district match. Libby Colson added the fourth goal for the Lady Sandites' second shutout of the season.

Wolf leads her team in scoring this season with five goals, despite missing a game and a half due to an injury. Wolf scored two goals in a season-opening 6-0 shutout against East Central, and is the only player to score more than two goals in a single match this year.

Sand Springs is 3-1 this year and will kick off district action Tuesday in a Highway 97 Rivalry match at Sapulpa (3-2).
